English class?

I believe cannot refers to be being unable to, whereas "can not" refers to being able not to.
Their usage is slightly different, and...incredibly confusing. Something like that...

Yeah i think mish is on the right tracks. Damn english is confusing. Any english buffs in the house? Although i doubt anyone is pedantic enough to correct can't or can not to cannot :P.

If you can't even adequately manipulate one language, then you are a very dreadful mess indeed. Grammar and punctuation are not "serious business", as they should come naturally to someone who I don't know... wishes to communicate effectively and has minimal pride in their language.

Edit: Can't is the contraction of cannot. "Can not" is less frequently used - usually when being emphatic.

And no, there's a spider in my room D: I'm waiting for it to give up hope and die of natural causes.

Get Firefox with the spell check. It checks everything for you!
Actually that not true, while yes it will check most words for you alot of the word are not in the word base or because of the way that is said flags red. I use spell check on everything I use. Though if it pisses skaw or bajaratt off I must be doing something right, who favorite thing to do is to drag everything down pre K grade level using the word "retard" in every sentence(and that not just in post involving me) that with any post that they have a different option then them in a previous post. Honestly do you think that retard or any other word actually hurt me, not one bit. In fact get a little laugh every time you use it out your childish behavior. This is a discussion board not a collage thesis paper get over it.

Holy crap I didn't expect this many replies. It was mostly a rant becuase people have turn into to asshole sence the realease of this game. You used to be able to stand in jueno /sh "help me with my af please" and get like 100 /tells in 5 mins. Now youre lucky to get 1 in 5 hours. Now you have people telling youto spell? It's not the way the game was built. It was built to get away from life AND unless youre an english teacher I don't think you need to tell someone that their spelling is off or their grammer is bad.Let them play the game they are paying for.If you can't read it simply state "I can't understand you, could you possiably write this better" much better than "I see that english wasn't youre first native tounge" or just straight up "Youre spelling and grammer sucks."

And if you think we "have" to type a god damn essay on QCDN than you are wrong.

Its a forum. A place to chat where you are able to talk as you want too.Maybe if the forum/thread said "help me with my english homework" than yes.

Good replies so far I didnt expect to get this many replies in like 10hours>.>!

Fixed. I couldn't resist.

Pretty much everything I could think of on this issue has been brought up, but I guess I'll just recap for reference.

The English language is a pain in the ass, there are far too many rules and words that change like the wind, let's not forget words that sound/are spelled the same that are a pain to someone who wasn't cursed with English as a first language either. (stationery = paper / stationary = not moving, standing still - what the crap, just one letter changes it, but they're pronounced the same?)

There are bound to be spelling/grammatical mistakes, it's inevitable as humans that any kind of mistake can happen. The small ones here and there are generally acceptable, but when you're not even trying, then you'll be branded a waste of flesh/time and discarded it would seem. (Example#1: "Sorry, I think you're an idiot, you should just stop trying and go somewhere else unless you're actually willing to learn." Example#2: "soz ur dumass, joo cnt baet me lolz go bak 2 skool" - that was really difficult, I think my IQ took a minor hit just mimicking that crap.)

It's pretty simple, there are "grammar nazis" and people who like to jump on every little mistake someone will make, but there's hope: QCDN has a built-in spell checking plug-in, you just have to install it, then you can click on it before you hit "Submit Reply" and it'll catch everything that appears incorrectly spelled, even stuff that is spelled right and isn't in that dictionary, you can just add that in during the checking process with one button though.

I'm not taking shots at anyone, just citing examples and potential fixes for the minor stuff for those who may have a bit of trouble but wish to make the corrections that they're unaware of at times.

Note: The spell-checking went nuts on example#2, it was hard to not let it do it's job XD

For the most part, people being unhelpful is a different matter altogether, and has actually been the case for quite awhile I think.

At any rate, unless it's illegible, misleading, or very very very bad, like some other people said, I don't see a need to randomly call someone on something like that.

HOWEVER

If you want people to read what you type, respect your arguments flames and opinions in general, use spelling. Grammar is important to a much lesser extent, however it IS the structure of the language and grammar keeps things coherant. This may not be english class, but they teach it to you IN english class so when you leave the classroom you can go around not looking like a retard.
This is the moral of the story. English classes don't exist just for the sake of existing. The intention isn't for someone to go into a room and be formal for an hour. The point is that you're supposed to learn the language, so you can use it properly. Frankly, I hated English classes the most of all, but I steel rite wurds reel gud liek lol. It's not about perfection, it's about giving a shit and actually trying.

It does make you look dumb, and it does make you look like a fool. In some situations, it can even come off as rude.

To get your point across to the other readers, grammar is probably your first and basic tool. Omitting certain parts of a sentence can get confusing to the reader and the intended meaning of the post can get lost within the process of deciphering it.

Spelling on the other hand is set to a different standard for me. People can tolerate a certain amount of misspelled words from one post. When it goes beyond their limit, however, they will/may criticize.
I really could care less if you can't/won't spell certain words if you have the basic grammar structures right. At least its one less thing for me to try and figure it out.
Ideally, if the post was written coherently and grammatically correctly, there would be no complaints.

This is a forum, yes.
Unfortunately, if you want to be treated in a certain way, you have to be able to at least use the minimum of grammar and spelling. Shortening words is handy and all but unless the reader is up-to-date with the abbreviations or whatever the new internet lingo is, it can be challenging to the reader.
I've had to read some posts over twice or more to try to figure out what was trying to be said. It came to a point where I sorta understood what Blazn said most of the time. Yusuke....no. Just no lol.
Some people would rather not go through that and would probably skip the post over or just ridicule them for the heck of it.

Using the wrong homophones can make it confusing to a reader whose first language is not English. I don't know, it's just something else I've noticed in some posts. Pretty minute things but still...

No one is saying you have to write an essay. However, if it isn't written in a way that is considered understandable, not many will take you seriously and will take jabs at whatever that was written and at you for being the writer.

what really gets me, is the simple fact that if you're composing a post, and you're trying to make valid points....wouldn't you WANT to look like you have a brain? Honestly, for those trying to defend their position, make a stance on a certain topic...and those people have spelling errors in every single sentence. Yeah, tbh, I'll just stop reading, and go to the next post. I have no tolerance for laziness.

It's obvious that males dominate this game, and it's been PROVEN that men are better with numbers over women, but don't you think you could at the very least look over what you've written before you hastily press the reply button? It will make you look 10x more credible in the long run. That is all.

I'm typing above the quotes so that I can warn people before reading everything. I believe that I have found at least one mistake performed by everyone who has posted thus far at least once. At least, with exception to those who only posted one sentance to obtain their PC+1 (Hali >.>). Anyhow, I expect "rate up's" for putting so much work into this. Also, in comparison to Neyla's correction post, I win.

Yuber said:
Who cares if i spell no when its suppose to mean know,Or write there when it's suppose to mean their?
"I" should be capitalized, "or" should not.

Dejan said:
I agree with everything above posted, Yuber, however, i have to draw a line when it comes to Blazn.
First comma should not be there.

Communication is one of the greatest things in QCDN or FFXI, so generally people like to be able to read or understand what someone is saying, therefore they might give a little constructive critisms to help the person/bash the person so that future readers can understand what they're trying to get out.
Run-on sentance anyone? lol

Valandil said:
And since this is not a chat room or an instant messaging program, that "chat talk" you speak of does not exist here.
Begining a sentance with a conjunction is a big no-no!

Capitalize "i", spell out people and without.

You should put a "then" in between language and I.

Improper use of the verb "having." You are eating* a turkey sandwich at 2 in the morning. In the literal defination of the word "have;" your sentence does not work.

Garvin said:
It's an automatic fail in my book, as nearly 100% of people who fail to attempt to communicate will also fail to attempt to actually play FFXI properly as well.
Nearly 100% of the people

Remove that comma.

Never begin a sentance with "But," unless you're ending it with "smecks"! ^.~

Mielle said:
Spelling, on a forum, is really only an issue if people are unable to decipher the intent of the content within the post.
No need for either of those comma's as the sentance is appropriate without them.

Stouter said:
I won't bash you for it, but I don't give a crap what you're saying if you type like that.
That comma is unnecessary.

Mishaela said:
A lot of people demand at least a half-legible/grammatically correct post because once it hits a certain mark of [lacking] quality, it becomes easy to misinterpret and then once that happens then communication starts to break down - someone misinterprets, the person tries to explain themselves better, and then you're left trying to figure out if they're telling the truth or just trying to save face.
Another run-on sentance for the win ladies! ^^;;

Elemmire said:
might as well make "won't" allowable for "willnot" or "don't" to be written as "donot"
"Allowable" is not the word you are looking to use in that phrase; grab a thesaurus.

Negorissimo said:

Replace "bad" with "poorly".

blackchaoshero said:

You can't use that comma at the end of the sentence. You must type that out as: "and opinions in general then you should use proper spelling"

By the way, its punctuation not punctionation.

Yea, I didn't have time to run a final spell check before posting. I'm at work and I spent all that time going post-to-post. lol oh well

Edit: I'd also like to point out that I know how to spell punctuation. x.x

lol, I never use half the punctuation that SHOULD be there correctly, unless Im writing or typing a report. I also never capitalize the first letter of the first sentence of my first paragraphs either. Sometimes I even dont capitalize at all unless the letter is before my invisible apostrophe...

But then again, Im in defense of Yuber. Sometimes people use bad grammar to type faster, and it does work. People need to get over themselves, and treat qcdn like a message board, not english class. Let the professors comment on their bad grammar if it appears in a report, but just leave it alone if its on qcdn. People here will do anything to be an asshole, no matter how low they stoop. I think its self-satisfaction and approval from their qcdn friends, who also like to be assholes for self-satisfaction and approval from their friends. Just a circle, really, of people upping their internet ego.

I rarely point out bad grammar, although I joked about it in someone's blog thread thread the other day. Typos and stuff like that are easy enough to overlook, but if you mangle the language beyond understanding... Ugh. I'll ignore you, but I'm not going to say "Ask me for help when you learn to type, noob!" because that would be rude.

I have my own problem areas, which is why one of my college professors pointed out I split infinitives like cordwood at a lumberjack convention. Watching Star Trek was always fun for him because he'd tense up every time he heard Kirk or Picard say "to boldly go where no man has gone before." He thought Douglas Adams was a genius for writing "to boldly split infinitives that no man had split before."

I think it's neat how people continue to ignore statements and points that were made.
I also think it should be obvious at this point why the literacy rate in the US is so low.

Quoting again, because it apparently needs to be.

Everyone has typos, everyone botches their grammar at some point. The people who do it consistently and habitually wind up looking really uneducated and lazy to a lot of people, and for good reason, whether or not it gets brought up.
