Is scholar broken, or is it supposed to do this?

Light Arts and Dark Arts boost Scholar's magic skill caps... but they also boost the skill caps of a main job when Scholar is subbed to it. This affects capped skills by changing the skill rank letter, it seems. Some skills go to an odd midpoint between B and B- rank.

RDM75/SCH10

Light Arts
Healing C- to B+
Divine +205 (cap unknown)
Enhancing no effect

Dark Arts
Elemental C+ to B+
Dark E to B/B-
Enfeebling no effect

BLM75/SCH10

Light Arts
Healing subbed D to B/B-
Divine subbed D to B/B-
Enhancing E to B/B-

Dark Arts
Elemental no effect
Dark no effect
Enfeebling C+ to B+

Is SE going to change this? If they do, dunno how great /sch is. If it's supposed to do this, it's an amazing power boost.

Wow, that is actually cool as shit. May get flamed for this, but maybe they made SCH for subjob purposes. That is awesome for Healing, that is, WOW.

If only healing magic wasn't completely useless...

Not to mention arts lower cast times and MP cost for spells.

I hope they leave it as is... RegenII, B'ish Dark and Elemental skills... looking better and better for RDM sub.

Oh! Before I forget, they still haven't fixed this glitch:

SCH+glitch4.png

Type in /ja "Penury" <me> then cast any white magic spell.

Then use the macro again.

And a third time.

If you type the macro a fourth time, the Stratagems timer reports as being 12:00
...also works for the lv10 Dark Arts Parsimony.

Leave blog comments, please? There's more articles there than just that one. Thanks.

wow that's really neat actually, not sure how good it would be for rdm since we use "light" and "dark" really frequently, and the recast on light and dark arts is 60 seconds.

The only advantage of /sch for rdm is a boost a elemental magic, this way you can have 310 skill pretty easily, but that's limited. + healing + drk are just useless.

How about Regen II (/sch37), and don't forget the lowered MP cost and even more Fast Cast from Arts, if you can switch around fast enough.

+Dark is great for the next Bio DoT tier, as well as Drain and Aspir, which /sch gets. Look at what the esteemed Kanican does with Dark+ gear soloing.

(But everyone knew I was going to disagree with Pchan, right?)

Its supposed to do that, yes. It raises your magic skills to B. If your magic skill is naturally above B, it won't raise it.

Don't you remember SE saying that SCH would "allow a WHM to land Aspir and Drain without the use of Elemental Seal"? That's why I've been saying that it could potentially be a very good sub for WHM, as it also gives -10% MP cost/-10% cast time.

The charge thing is, however, a bug.

I don't think the charge thing is a bug. It's more of a cautionary "you'd best not do it again...". If you use it to -3 charge, you can't use a stratagem for 12 minutes.

Actually, you can use it again, since after four minutes the charges go to -1 and you just push it back to -2...

It's just a counting "bug" if anything. You're supposed to only get three charges. It would make more sense to start at 3 then 2 then 1 then 0 but instead it's 0 then -1 then -2 then -3. It still works the way it's supposed to, just... isn't described well.

I really think it's a bug. Wish it wasn't, though. 3 Strat sub and 6 main (75) would be fine with me.

"When set to the support job, a scholar will always have a maximum of one charge available, regardless of level."

Oh. Bio has one more hp/tick past 211, don't need sch for that. Drain and aspir, even at 250 skill awon't do much. +drk gear don't do shit for soloing ...

I'm reading up on Scholar now. I'm almost a 63 whm, was going to go and level up my blm more so I won't be gimped by 65. But after reading this, could WHM/SCH be the better option? If so, I'll level it to 37.

Oh, is that with sch as a subjob? I just assumed you meant as main in which case 3 would've been the proper max. Then I guess it is indeed a glitch then. Makes sense now that I think about it since you'd have to be what, 70 to have that third one? lol

I am disappointed by SCH cause its not a good sub for BLM, although it seems good for rdm and whm ><. It does raise enfeebling skill a lot but doesn't give stoneskin, blink (gravity).

On the surface, the Skill boosts look really great. B Skill is high enough to give pretty good results on any Spell that relies on skill. When you look a bit closer though, there really aren't many applications.

eg, BLMs get a large boost to Healing, Enfeebling, Enhancing and Divine Skills. Looking closer though, a BLM/SCH has no Divine spells at all, no Enhancing spells that use Skill except for Spikes, Enfeebling Spells such as Bind, Blind and Poison (black enfeebles are typically weaker than white), and a virtually useless Healing Skill which won't get used on anything bigger than Cure III. They will get a big boost on Sleep accuracy though, although certainly not of the order of ES. Very specific uses, and not a good all round sub.

RDM get boosts to Healing, Divine, Elemental and Dark Skills. RDM/SCH again has no Divine Spells, Healing Skill is still useless, Dark actually gives us the highest DoT with Bio III now surpassing a BLMs Bio II (by only 1HP/tic) and our Aspir gets better (but we lose Conserve MP which has to be a loss). Elemental Skill boost will help our nukes a lot, and we don't lose any nuking ability from any other sub to get it. The times anyone really relies on a lot of RDM nukes though is farily small (and we lose ES for single nukes). Again, it's situational, but it would only be useful as a sub in very specific situations, and wouldn't be all that widespread.

WHM gains boosts in Enhancing, Dark, Elemental, and Enfeebling. WHM/SCH's highest nuke at 75 is Water II so that won't help much. It's only Dark Spells are Drain and Aspir (and again you have to give up Conserve MP or Autorefresh), so that's not much use. Enhancing will actually help, as WHM already has the strongest Barspells in the game, and this will make them stronger. Enfeebling will also allow you to land the white enfeebles (most of the useful ones) which would be useful in small group and low level parties where a RDM isn't able to be fitted in or available. Again, WHM/SCH is situational, but the uses seem to be be more mainstream that for BLM/SCH or RDM/SCH.

Not a great sub, but will have it's uses, particularly on WHM.
