Hey,

I was wondering if anyone had tried this game? What's it like? Is it any good?

I saw they have a 14-day free trial and I thought I would give it a whirl, but I don't want to waste my time downloading/installing if it blows.

Thanks.

I didn't like it, it's a point-n-click space game, economics in it are awesome, but combat sucks BALLS. If I'm controling a single ship, I wanna dogfight, twitch style, if you've ever played Homeworld, then you know what to expect, it's that but with a single ship and an elaborate trading system.

Give it a try, it's free, can't hurt. But personally, I'm holding out for Infinity Online, which is pretty much EVE but twitch.

EVE has some good concepts, ingame radio, podding, corpse stealing and the corporation system is good, one of the more interesting ideas, is being able to pay your subscription with ingame currency.

I still maintain a character in it just because the graphics are really nice and I get a kick out of flying a spaceship every once in a while. I've mostly played it as a solo game so haven't really gotten involved in the corporation system and the PvP fighting. I have stumbled into a bad area a few times and been blown up.

Here's the thing.....VERY steep learning curve to it. The economy is not too hard to pick up. If you end up going into mining, it's pretty boring.

The missions are nice but they quickly get hard and you'll need some help.

Got 8 months behind me or so.

Its pretty much as Grem wrote. Point and clicky with Homeworld style, so you will never experience a dogfight, a la Freelancer.

Closets thing to a fast paced dogfight you can get, is Frigate combat with short range weapons and afterburners on.

The game is huge. 6000 systems I think, sadly they mostly look alike so even after travelling through 40 systems, you sometimes wonder if you even left the first system on your route.

Theres plenty of stuff to do.

Mining - Many find this boring as hell, and it can be. However, if you start 2 characters, and make one the main you train skills on, and the other a mining character, you can make some decent amount of money just mining in High security areas. 55k every 5 mins is better than any level 1 mission.

Missions - Theese can be a pain, but extremely rewarding. Ofcourse you start with level 1 agents, that offer easy as hell missions to hardly any money. You dont really see the good rewards until you reach level 3 agents. On level 4 agents, you can easily make upwards 50M on 1 mission.

Trading - got no clue about this, never done it. Involves a lotta risk and travel.

Rat/Bounty hunting - Fly to asteroid fields or complexes (BCNM kinda) and blow up rats for money. Or hunt other players that got a nice bounty on them. However, thats not very easy and often impossible.

0.0 space - Areas with a 0.0 security rating, is nothing but PVP areas. Concord (EvE's Police) got no control there, and players can build stations. Its also in theese areas, where ALL the hardcore elite stuff is. Downthere, its pretty normal to make 250M a day. But its also easy to lose 250M on being blown up hehe.

Theres also manufactoring and invention. Never done much of that, except when I needed to build some torpedoes for my battleship.

Exploration - This is something I'm currently training for. Find hidden stuff in systems. Its a chance based thing, and often time consuming. But it involves launching out probes, scanning for a long time, hope to find something in the system, then use other probes to get closer to it, and in the end find the exact position. It can be a hidden asteroid field in wich you can mine. A complex, an archeology site and so on.
You can download this video, if you want to see how its done: Exploration video

Anyway, the game is nice if your into Homeworld kinda space games. Important things is to get into a corporation fast, or you will quickly get bored of soloing. Oh and get learning skills to 4. It really pays of in the end.

Oh and next year, they should be updating to DX10 graphics, and it will be made possible to walk inside stations too.

With the latest patch, they made some new tutorial agents too, wich basicly hands you 2 new frigates (Type depends on what area you started as), and some basic equipment for them too.
If you ever decide to try it out, feel free to look me up inthere.
I go by the name of: Kanash Lightbringer and my alts name: Dawnmaiden.

From playing the 14 day trial, I remember fighter being a LOT more fun than miner. Mining is so depressing and repetitive. You essentially watch your ship shoot lasers at an asteroid until your cargo is full, warp back to a station, stow it or put it for sale, warp out, repeat.

The missions were somewhat fun. I've heard really bad stories about the company and Band of Brothers being tied close together. There were some huge threads about it on the EVE forums a while back. They apparently got some blueprints given to them by GMs, also the server is reset in their favor sometimes. Basically, corrupt GMs working for them.

It seems like it could be a game that requires little play. You level your character passively, setting a skill to auto train over a course of hours to weeks for the upper level skills. This also means that you might never reach the same level of people who started the game before you. They have had more time than you.

While EVE seems like a fun game, the GM thing with BoB scares me.

Aye fighting is a lot more fun than mining. However, when done in groups (gangs or fleet), both things can be enjoyable. Nothing like watching a fleet of 4 mining barges, haulers and combat ships for protection, totally clean out a asteroid field in a hour or 2 hehe.
Thats why, getting out of the rookie corporation and into a real one fast is a must.

The BoB & GM thingy, I dont know much about. It were a shitty thing for sure, but it seems to have calmed down now. Ofoucrse, never know whats happening behind the curtains.

EvE is as fun as you make it to really. Just like mining is boring, missions can be boring too, when your Agent offer the same mission to you for the 14th time.
Warp out, shoot that, warp back, get reward.
1 mission is specially noted, its called "Break their will". You need to fly out, destroy a repair station, and thats it. People can get this up to 5 times a day.

My friend plays this and is stupidly rich in game. Seeing his ships and stuff is breathtaking. However when I tried it I lost my main ship by accidentally clicking on something. I had no money to buy a new one so just stopped playing.

I tried the trial thing... all I did was mine. I didn't want to fight because reading horror stories of people losing billion ISK ships (ISK is the currency) and being basically destroyed after that. Also, I think if you want to keep all your train skills after you die you have to keep a clone or something? When your main ship blows up you are in an escape pod that goes like 100m/s and if that dies you come back as your "clone".

Money in EvE isn't as.. eh, scare I guess, as FFXI. For example, I made several million in the 14-day free trial and had a pretty nice mining ship and what not. Ships later supposedly cost billions and require weeks and numerous people to construct.

For entertainment, seek up Nightclaw or something, he pulled off a pretty big scam thats legendary.

I'm glad I found FFXI before I found EVE. I would be infinitely more addicted to a game like that than I am to this one. I got stoked just reading its description on wiki... my RL couldn't suffer playing a game like that.
