Humanity has lead to the complete obliteration of many species, animal and plant. A trashcan full of kittens shouldn't phase you in comparison. Not saying this isn't an awful thing, but in all honesty, being "dissapointed at the world" over common, everyday cats is over the top. If this event somehow caused the collapse of all cat-kind, then you can be upset at the world.

Growing up on a farm, we had to euthenize kittens all the time. For some damn reason, people see a farm and think that that's the place to dump the cat's they don't want. 28 barn cats, 1/2 of them pregnant every year (and they don't exactly have one at a time), you do the math.
