I'm trying to give up caffine and I am right smack dab in the middle of the withdrawl symptoms. Right now I'm sluggish, a little moody, but the worst part would be this massive headache that I can't seem to go away no matter what medicine I take.

1) What did you do to relieve the headaches?
2) How long did it take before the headaches went away?
3) Have you founf that you try to avoid caffinated beverages to this day or do you allow yourself one every now and then?
4) Did you replace it with something else? (Caffine free soda, kool-aide, water, milk, etc?)

Any other thing you would care to share would be appriciated. I think the hardest part for me will be when I play FFXI. I am constantly sipping on a diet Dr. Pepper while playing.

I replaced coffee with Green Tea - the kind that I drink is still mildly caffienated...but cold turkey was NOT going to rock for me.

Why give up caffiene, anyway? Coffee and Tea boost your metabolism...

Don't get me wrong, the caffine has been good to me. I just don't like the idea of being addicted to something. I like to be in control but right now there is that little demon saying "I can make the pain go away." "Drink me." Basically it has been probably 16 years or more (i'm 26)since I've been stimulant free. I'm curious as to what might be without it. Honestly I don't even feel the effects of caffine anymore(i.e. abundance of energy, shakiness, inability to sleep). I can down a 2 liter and fall right to sleep.

I've been there Mo but I'm working this full-time job for "The Man". Unfortunatly "The Man" has rules regaurding that and while smoking is fun it isn't worth my income and benefits. They are called accidents for a reason.

One word...Water.

Drink a minimum of 64 ounces a day. Keep it handy too. If you are thirsty drink a lot of it. When you are not thirsty, just keep drinking it.
You'll suffer a little while, but hey, you want to get off the caffiene right?
Keep the will power up and just keep drinking water till you level off.
It'll be sooner than you realize.

I just read a university study that said caffine withdrawl can last up to 6 months. I already drink between .5 - 1 gallon of water a day(at least during the week) A couple people recommended that I ween myself off but I'm no good at that. I have the will power to say no more but I don't have the will power to keep some in my fridge and say "only one".

That said, get rid of all of it.
You seem to know your limits.

Take it from someone who feels the exact same way about his vices.

Water gets boring quickly.
Go get R.W. Knudsen "Just Cranberry" juice in the health food section.
Mix 4 oz. of that and 28 oz. of water. It's awesome.

I resisted a long time, because I really don't like cranberries, but I have to say that drinking 64+ oz of that stuff a day is no problem at all, and it has next to no sugar in it.

I still down some 3 cans of Lemon Diet Coke a day as well, and a 16 oz latte with Amaretto flavor.

..........you want a Mt. Dew.............DO THE DEW!!!!! NOW NOW NOW NOWNOWNWNONWONWOWNWON!!!!!

I gave up caffiene almost entirely when pregnant. You do need to keep yourself well hydrated- koolaid was my beverage of choice (and still is). I still try to avoid caffiene as best I can now, though, because I'm just not used to it anymore. In high school I'd start my day by downing 2 cans of Coke for breakfast, and then get to school early to have coffee with my friends in the science lab (our chem teacher rocked). Now, if I have a single can of caffienated soda after 3 PM I'll be wired til the wee hours.

My mom also had to cut caffiene for medical reasons. She was a HUGE junkie (started coffee at age 6, so looking at 50 years) and regularly drank an entire pot of Italian coffee in a day. She had to stop because the caffiene was actually giving her tiny, harmless cysts that were interfering with her doctor's ability to read her mammograms. She's now down to a cup first thing in the morning, and decaf the rest of the day.

Best way really is to wean yourself slowly, and hope for the best. When I went cold turkey I felt miserable for about a week, then was fine. Mom weaned slowly, and still felt miserable for about a week doing it, but got through it OK.

One last note- beware of taking Excedrin for withdrawal headaches. It will work wonders- because it has caffiene in it. :P

Day number 3 and I hate it. Yesterday had the most slight of headaches. I mean I could hardly tell it was there. I got all cocky and thought I was through the woods... WRONG!!! I now have a headache that starts in my right eye, procedes to fill my head, and stops in my neck.

Quitting caffiene cold turkey will give you the worst of headaches. You should gradually wean yourself off the caffiene. Drink fewer drinks each day that have them till your totally off the caffiene. It works best imho.

hope this info helps.
