An excerpt from the official Church of Satan website:

"If you have read our books, you know that Satanism isnt about taking drugs, and it isnt about harming animals or children. Unlike many religions and philosophies, Satanism respects and exalts life. Children and animals are the purest expressions of that life force, and as such are held sacred and precious in the eyes of the Satanist. Besides, it is very un-Satanic to take any creatures life against its will. It is equally un-Satanic to cloud your brain and impair your judgment with mind-altering substances."

Also, someone who worships Satan as a being is practicing Luciferianism, not Satanism.

A religion and worship of the human body and the material world, not always the worship of the devil himself (unless you're of the Luciferian path). Satanism is type casted by the media along with witchcraft and paganism, as something evil... to be hated and feared whereas satanism does not promote violence, animal sacrifice or racial hatred in any manner. Satan keeps the church in business.

A religion based on indulgance rather than chastity, services include men dressed in long black robes and women dressing seductivly or nude. Does not promote multiple sexual relationships but does not chasty them if it fullfills the desires of the individual.

Satanism has nothing to do with the Satan of the bible.

A widely misunderstood religion started by Anton LeVay.
The church practices self indulgences and frowns upon altruistic behavior. The Church of Satan in no way acknowledges the existence of any devine being neither good nor evil. They worship no devil, though the phrase "hail satan" is commonly used. However in the church Satan represent the repressed desires of all humans and therefore saying "hail satan" is to hail one's self.
It is commonly believed that the church of satan is a horrible group of people that should be feared. The CoS should only be feared if one is actually a member of an archaic religion which preaches self restraint and stupid moral systems that are truly outdated. To roughly quote LeVay one of the philosophies is if someone smacks you on the cheek smash him on his and ten times more for he that turns the other cheek is like the cowardly dog that roles over when kicked. Therefore the person above who stated he beat up on satanists at school was more a satanist than the person who laid there and took it while "chanting" the name of an entity that a true satanist would not even believe to truly exist.

Many religions have broken off from satanism including but not limited The temple of Set.

While conversing in my theology class I realized that the satanist seemed to know more about christianity and satanism both than the self-professed christian who merely reaffirmed his ignorance everytime he opened his mouth.

Satanism is commonly thought to be one who worships the devil which is quite wrong because that would be called a Luciferian. Now a Satanist is someone who only believes in themselves, they believe in their own religon, they believe in pleasing themselves "self indulgece" which to most people is considered one of the 7 deadly sins. But Once again a Satanist is not someone who worships the devil.

the Christian "sins" lead to self-gratification.

In most cases, I have found that anyone that has turned away from christianity knows more about it than those that follow it. The ways of the spiritual leaders tend to focus on what they consider to be the good parts while ignoring the parts that they don't like, often times even removing books from the bible all together.

But Satanism is a farse. A bad excuse to let go of all restraint and practice self indulgince as your religion. The people that practice it do so because there is a gaping hole left in their life where religion has seeded itself so deeply, they know not how to fill it with anything else except religion.
 
Might be wise to change the name from Satanism then.

Ok, let's call it...Devilism even tho it apparently has nothing to do with the Devil. Or maybe let's call it Frogism even though it really has nothing to do with frogs...Yeah...That'll work. No mix ups will happen. Typical stupidity among the religious imho.

My brother was talking to a summoner yesterday who refused to have Ifrit because he did not want to make a pact with a demon. I thought it was crazy.

if you want to talk about the summons like that... basically you're making a
"pact with a demon" with all of them since you're calling them from the unknown.. yeah ^^;;;

I think the only reason they call themselve Satanists or the Church of Satan is for purely antagonistic reasons. It's basically a means of getting attention and provoking/confronting certain sects. I imagine all that San Francisco LSD also played a role in the decision making.
 
Y'know, I wondered how I got Ifrit as a summon without fighting him. He just turned up at my little black-draped shrine with its ceremonial daggers and said "'Sup?" and started following me around. Diabolos did the same thing and keeps stealing the Fritos.

On a serious note, I had to give a speech in college one time and chose to define Satanism for the simple reason that, because I'm an atheist, I knew it would piss off the Christians in the class. It worked, too. Two of them came to me in the break room later and asked me if I was a Satanist. I toyed with the idea of "throwing the horns" and saying "Hail Satan" but settled for a simple "No, why?"

I grew up in one of the notches on the Bible Belt, so I'm well aware of how distrustful some Christians can be of things like "knowledge of other faiths."

And now I'm a BEASTMASTER wearing the goat horns! As the Church Lady would say, "Isn't that special?"

zOMG, we should jaill all the beastmasters for skinning animals and wearing their skin as clothes. I just KNEW Halfirien were in to that kind of stuff!

Still, this whole satan stuff sounds better than scientology.
