Anyone else getting this error all of the sudden?

I played FFXI not 4 days ago, and everything worked fine, no errors whatsoever. I tried to log on today, and I got this error upon trying to run it (though POL works fine). The minute the screen goes black and FFXI tries to boot up I get kicked back to POL and given the error.

So, assuming of course it was a problem with my video card, I went and looked through my computer. Everything else seems A-OK. Device manager detects it, says it is enabled and is running fine. As a precaution (thinking the drivers became outdated for some reason) I updated the drivers for it but I'm still getting this error.

There's only a few things that seem suspicious now that this has happened. About 9 days ago or so I was tooling around on my computer, nothing special. Suddenly the screen went black, stayed that way for about 7 or 8 seconds, then came back. No idea why it happened. I checked into it and everything was fine on my system.

Second was about 2 days ago. I told a friend of mine he could create a character for FFXI on my account, so long as he paid the extra 1$ a month for it. I had fallen asleep, and my friend was playing the game. I woke up a few hours later and my friend had gone, and when I turned on the monitor there was FFXI with an error on it, saying I had disconnected.

I thought nothing of it at the time, after all, we've been having DDOS attacks as of late. When I asked my friend the next day what exactly happened, he said the screen went black and it seemed to have frozen up. He said he didn't wanna mess with it so he left it as is and went home to go to sleep.

Everything else runs fine on my system, save FFXI. I've been busy IRL and haven't had time for FFXI, but I have been able to run Fable: The lost chapters, which is a rather graphics intensive game. So I think if there was any problems Fable would have crashed as well.

Anyone else getting this problem? Or is it just me?

Update: This is copied and pasted from another website I've asked for help (to save me retyping everything).

All tests I ran with Direct X diagnostics reported no problems whatsoever, and all tests were successful.

Problem doesn't seem to be with direct X.

Edit: I just wanted to add that I do have the latest DirectX and all was fine with the installation of the new graphics card drivers.

I also want to thank you guys for all the help you could provide me (and I'll practically kiss your feet if you manage to help me solve the problem).

Edit again: Just tried running Fable again, crashed like whoa. Screen went all freaky and for about 10 minutes I couldn't regain control of my desktop. Eventually I managed to shut it down, and upon Running DirectX Diagnostics this is what came up:

DirectDraw test results: All tests were successful.
Direct3D 7 test results: Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device): HRESULT = 0x887602eb (error code)
Direct3D 8 test results: Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device): HRESULT = 0x8876086a (3D not available)
Direct3D 9 test results: Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device): HRESULT = 0x8876086a (3D not available)

In addition to this, it now says AGP Texture Accelleration "Not Available."

Apparantly I stepped into some wierd bizarro world sometime while I was sleeping..

Edit Episode 2- The OP strikes back:

Did a windows update just now to see if there was anything I could be missing. Everything updated and restarted, checked diagnostics when the computer was up again and everything checked out okay. However, upon trying to run FFXI I still got the error. I have the latest drivers from Nvidia, and from what I can tell (I checked all around to make sure) I have the most recent Direct X.

Anyone have any clue as to what kind of crazy nonsense is going on with my computer?

Try rolling back your drivers to the last ones you know worked

Chances are they are already gone (due to wiping the drive of any of them).

However, here's something interesting:

I can run FFXI using the windower, but if I try to run it without the windower it immediately crashes.

edit: Also, the last ones I knew that worked were the ones I had installed. I installed the new ones and got the same problem.

However, due to being able to run the game in the windower I think it points to the problem being with direct X..

Man you should be using the windower anyway thats what its there for!

yeah but anything else on the system that runs Direct3D crashes hardcore. Fable went nuts when I tried to run it lmao.

Stumped my ass, ill have a chat with a few chums for you

Thanks Flymop, I'm still looking around and trying to figure out exactly what is wrong.

In a completely unrelated note, Firefox is running strangely. Plugins don't install right, nor are they detected. For instance when I try to change my java settings to allow me to use java with firefox it says to make sure firefox is installed correctly or to make sure I have permissions to change those settings (which I do have, I'm listed as the computer administrator).

/sigh

Sometimes I really hate computers.

an uninstall and reinstall of fire fox should sort that

Did it, twice :D

Probably something to do with the registry. Even after a full uninstall/reinstall my settings and favorites are still there.

My directx dumped on me a while back, and I first noticed the problem when attempting to play WoW for the first time.

After that, all directx apps froze and booted me back to windows with some sort of error. The only solution I found was to download and install the developers SDK? of directx 9.0c. All has been right as rain since.

Hope that helps :(

I'll try that Asia, if it works I'll have your babies... twice.

Looks like I'm not having your babies Asia, it didn't work. I'm on the line with a FFXI TSR guy. Hopefully he can help me.

I actually did, and ya know what pisses me off?

It was as simple as going into my FFXI config and changing the overlay resolution to that of my desktop.

Computers can be such assholes lol.

Yeah now I'm just trying to decide whether I want to re-update my drivers or leave them be (since I'm using the drivers recommended by SE). I kinda want to but it just seems like a hassle after I've been tinkering with this bitch of a computer for the past few days.

Oddly enough, I cant get a decent framerate to save my ass with SE recommended drivers >.< only until I switched to Forceware 81.85 did I get anything remotely playable without having to set all the bells and whistles down to 0.

Crazy too, I can run Q4 really nice, yet FFXI which is like a few years old runs like dookie ....

Yeah, it's bad programming on SE's part. Even with a decent computer I get respectable amounts of lag when I turn the weather effects on. Some information on it can be found here (note that they are posters at alla, so take what they say with a grain of salt. But for the most part I have to agree):

Specific quotes:

It's a long time coming. SE made a lot of mistakes just because they didnt want to rewrite anything while porting to PC. As a result we have a cpu intensive game that barely touches your GPU.

The blocking/checkering on clouds and skybox overlay textures is down to SE's use of the crappy DX3 texture compression format(a format they choose to squeeze everything into the ps2's massive 4mb of vga mem)

What your seeing is the dither'ed blend from the four-bit(16 shades of grey)explicit alpha channel the fact that they never improved it for the PC version just goes to show how lazy SE where/are in there porting, when FFXI was first released on the PC 2-3 years ago PC GFX cards supported better quality/faster texture compression formats why they didnt choose to us it i have no idea...if like any good design house you keep masters of your 32bithigh res art it would be quite easy to just run a batch to recompress to another format...

But as long as SE feel they need to limit the game engine/texture quality to the lowest common denominator(AKA the ps2)your stuck with FFXI's subpar visuals...now if they made the ps2 the base line and allowed extra above and beyond that ppl would be happer but that would take extra work on SE's behalf and it seems there just to lazy to do it.....

I should upgrade my graphics drivers I suppose, but meh. I'm being lazy today. I spent the past few days tinkering with it :D
