I reached Lv. 30 fishing skill yesterday, and now I'm one of those purple-clad figures you see dotting the coastlines of Vana'diel. I was making my casts off the southern cliffs of West Sarutabaruta, hauling up Ogre Eels and Bluetails, when I witnessed something so sad it made my taru WHM heart break.
One of the anglers, a mithra named Dlboy, pulled a crab and died. Another fisherman, Rthewrter, raised her. Then Dlboy died again. Rthewrter raised her again. Then she died again. Raised again. Died again. And again. It was heartbreaking, the way that developmentally-challenged mithra couldn't learn from her mistakes and avoid danger. Her sister, Dlboy, must've had the same disorder because she kept dying in the same hideous way.
I know what I'm talking about. I've only pulled two monsters in the past three weeks of hardcore fishing. I was saddened to see such pointless deaths.
When I mentioned this senseless tragedy to Falsey, he came to bear witness to the strength of these mighty mithras who wouldn't be held back in their quest to catch yummy fish. I was soon to the point where I was cheering for every crab they pulled, because I wanted those crabs to know their victories would be hollow. Sure, they could kill Dlboy and Dlcom all night (and did), but they could never crush their spirit!
Another angler, Jerry, met the same fate. I had to admire Rthewrter's protective instincts for constantly raising each one as they fell. She must be dedicated, because those she raised never acknowledged her. They just kept fishing. Another player, Ftugiuh, did his best to help them by trying to kill every monster they hauled up. Unfortunately, he was not always fast enough. I'm sure it left him crippled with guilt.
Falsey decided it was dangerous leaving those poor dead mithras in the middle of a fishing warzone, so he cast Tractor on Dlcom. The poor player didn't have the sense to accept the tractor, which was sad because Rthewrter found herself unable to raise the mithra. She cast Raise three times, but nothing happened because of the tractor spell. So sad.
Rthewrter is a Lv. 50 WHM who's only Rank 1, so there are probably many things she doesn't understand about the game. She clearly misunderstood our actions (done out of love, I assure you), because she quickly turned her attention to us.
"She told me she will kill me with gas," Falsey said.
And a minute later, she said the same to me: "You will me be dead by the gas!!"
Well, I was taken aback. I'm sure nobody could blame me for saying "Kiss my taru ass" at that point.
Another player, fishing off the cliff beside us, said "Fuckin' Chinese gil farmer. Kill 'em all!" It's a sorrowful attitude to have, and I said "They keep dying on their own!"
Falsey understands how hard I've worked toward my Lu Shang's rod, and he pointed out they were all using them. So I went down the line and admired their gear. Yes, they all had Lu Shangs. I didn't believe it, so I checked them all again. And again. And again just to be sure.
Rthewrter took offense and said "you say anything----jerk!!! (/smile)"
So I admired their equipment a few more times. Damn, they had some nice stuff for such low-ranking characters.
Rthewrter said "You strike to me blaming me to give you the gratuity!!! all right!!!!"
"What does that mean?" Falsey asked.
"I think she thinks I'm mad that I can't charge for raises."
I'm not that kind of WHM. To show I was loving and caring, I started casting Protect II on all of them. I mean, that's what we do. Most people are grateful for random Protects.
Not Rthewrter. She said "I see not comprehending japanese??? jerk." I laughed at the cuteness of her broken English. She said "I will go fishing!!!! and you also find the space to play!!!!!"
Falsey turned to me and said "She asked me 'You two work anything here?'"
Eventually another player, Dsfksjdg, turned up to help protect those fishing mithras. He walked over to me and put up his flag, hoping I would invite him to be in my party. I didn't do it. He was a high-level character who's title was "Chocobo Trainer," and I feared his inexperience might cause him to Warp II me back to Port Windurst.
Then False decided to walk around. He found himself surrounded by goblins, who started chasing him! He yelled at me to protect him, and it was completely natural that he would run right into the middle of those anglers since that's where I was. Dsfksjdg was kind enough to Waterga the goblins, and I told Falsey he could've been killed! Very foolish, Falsey!
Rthewrter again misunderstood and called me a jerk.
Then Falsey started train farming, which is something I don't approve of in newbie areas. But he pointed out he was only doing it away from the newbies. All those crabs and mandragoras looked funny running around the ankles of those fishers. It was a shame when Falsey lost hate and some of them turned on the mithras. Luckily Dsfksjdg was there to help.
I have to admire those brave players. Hour after countless hour they are there, fishing and fishing and fishing without cease. They give me hope that one day, if I try hard enough, I can earn my own Lu Shang's and stand proudly among them.
NOT!
