“FANTASTIC FOUR” RECEIVES DREADED NC-17 RATING
Director refuses to cut Thing’s full-frontal nudity scene
Hollywood – In a major setback for 20th Century Fox, the MPAA has given an NC-17 rating to “Fantastic Four” for explicit sex scenes including full frontal nudity by the Thing. The film was released with a PG-13 rating, but after Director Tim Story won a court battle yesterday, the film has now received the dreaded NC-17 rating which will translate into fewer box-office dollars. Story had negotiated a deal for final cut with 20th Century Fox, but studio executives never expected to see Thing involved in an explicit sex scene with the character saying, “I’m hard as a rock.”
“Once we saw Story’s final cut, we were appalled by the graphic sex scenes,” said 20th Century Fox spokesperson Peter Lightson. “We were able to get the movie out with a PG-13 rating while we battled with Story in court. Unfortunately, a judge has decided that we have to release the movie with Story’s final cut since that’s what we agreed to. It’s ridiculous that these superheroes are having sex with full frontal nudity by the Thing. You know how huge that thing looks on the big screen?”
20th Century Fox is appealing the ruling. But in the meantime, the MPAA has had no choice but to give the film the NC-17 rating.
“We’ve never seen anything quite like it,” said MPAA member Jason Franklin. “There’s a moment in the film where the Thing’s thing erupts with a little volcano. It was funny, strange and obscene all at the same time.”
In the film, scientist-inventor Dr. Reed Richards (Ioan Gruffudd) is able to stretch and contort his body however he pleases.
“That’s another scene that the studio wanted me to cut,” said Story. “It’s where Dr. Richards is tied up, and he can’t move his arms and his legs. Dr. Richards ends up using a ‘special’ part of his body that stretches out and picks up the phone to call for help. That ‘special’ body part then mixes an apple martini. It’s an amazing scene. It’s a lot better than that famous scene in ‘Boogie Nights.’”
Another controversial scene involves Sue Storm (Jessica Alba) who discovers she can turn invisible. She ends up having onscreen sex with Victor Von Doom (Julian McMahon).
“Technically it’s my first nude scene, but you don’t get to see my t*ts because I’m invisible,” said Alba.
However, moviegoers do get to see Von Doom having sex with an invisible Sue Storm.
“It’s the most disturbing thing I’ve ever seen,” said moviegoer Drew Matloskan. “You’ve got this Van Doom guy doing this Sue Storm woman in every possible position, but since she’s invisible, you just see the guy by himself on the screen going at it. It’s so messed up.”
Story is defending himself, saying he wanted to portray the characters in a realistic way.
“I wanted to make these superheros come alive,” said Story. “Think about the stuff that happens to you every day. Your life isn’t PG-13. Stuff happens, and I wanted to bring real life to moviegoers.”
Story’s approach also explains his movie “Taxi” which was billed as a comedy, but managed only a few laughs.
“Life isn’t funny all the time. That’s why ‘Taxi’ ended up with only one or two decent laughs,” added Story. “It’s like when you tell a friend a funny story, and he only laughs a little, but you still think it’s hilarious. You eventually say, ‘You had to be there.’ I guess I was saying the same thing with ‘Taxi.’”
Most Americans have never seen or even heard of “Taxi,” but Story has quickly become the most hated man in internet chatrooms and blogs for comic book enthusiasts.
“This director has completely tainted the franchise with this final cut of the movie,” says David Orston (fantasticfourever.blogspot.com). “It doesn’t make sense that Thing would have sex with a woman. His entire body is covered in rock. I suppose he could have used a condom in that scene, but it was tough to tell because of how it was shot. Wait, I can’t believe I’m even having this conversation.”
