PHILADELPHIA -- A 25-year-old North Philadelphia man has been charged with killing his young daughter.

The mother said 17-month-old Alayiah was violently punched by Tyrone Spellman over a video game.

"My baby is gone at the hands of her father," Mia Turman said tearfully. "I have to put her in the ground, I shouldn't have to do this."

As the 21-year-old took a nap inside their row-home on the 1500 block of 29th Street, Turman left Alayiah in the care of Spellman, who also goes by the name Anwar Salahuddin.

Turman said that when she woke, "I asked why my baby not breathing. He says, 'She's breathing.' Her eyes were closed."

Turman phoned police around noon. Medics responded and took Alayiah to Temple University Hospital, where the little girl was pronounced dead at 12:37 p.m.

Police arrested Spellman, who lives on the 1500 block of North 29th Street, over the weekend.

He was charged with murder, endangering the welfare of a child and possessing an instrument of crime.

A medical examiner performed an autopsy on the child.

"His confession was she pulled the cords in the game, the system is -- the box itself -- fell, and he was upset and then responsible for paying for the game, so he hit her in her face twice," Turman said, adding that Spellman also allegedly slung the child over a chair.

Eight-months pregnant with another baby girl, Turman was struggling with how to cope. She said she fell in love with a man who had never been violent before, and she wanted to know what would possess someone to kill a child.

"You can't give me a good enough answer to say why you would kill your baby," Turman said.

The couple's second baby will be born with her dad charged with killing the sister she never met.

"I do not understand this. I will never understand this," Turman said.

NBC 10 reporter Deanna Durante said a note on the door of the North Philadelphia row-home Monday night said not to judge Spellman because he would never hurt a child.

Urgh...thats horrible...

She said she fell in love with a man who had never been violent before

I smell bullshit. No one without anger issues or a history of violence will do this over something so minor.

Guy obviously had issues, the titles a little misleading.

If you have no respect for life you don't deserve to have it.

I agree... that, or the woman got married to a man she didn't know completely. When you are in love you always get blind by it and never see the bad side of that beloved one, just the good one. =/ Big mistake.

Ahh shit, more bait for Jack fucking Thompson. Thats messed up though.

Its people like "them" that give "good" videogames a "bad" name.

But as for the actual situation,... thats pretty messed up shit.

thats immensly sick. I wish to God he is put to death.

Actually, this is one case where I would rather see life without parole. Just so he can go on knowing what all his daughter could have missed by knowing/hearing/seeing what his unborn daughter will do and become. And I'm pretty sure the inmates wouldn't be too happy with him anyway.

so many harsh punishers here.

Of course he should go to jail, but I do not believe in death sentence. Let him stay there for a good 35 years, then put him on parole. Senseless act, its too bad people can make really stupid mistakes that affect the entirety of their lives.

I wished like hell the paying to keep these kind of people alive and in jail fell solely on people who think this. What he did was not a mistake. You don't "accidently" kill a baby when you're punching it in the face and throwing it over chairs. Should be beat to death...

Statements like this make me literally ill. "Harsh punishers?" HERE? You must be joking. We're talking about a guy who punched a 17 month old in the face and threw her over a chair because she pulled the cords of a gaming system making it fall down. Yeah, let's not agree with the death sentence although that's exactly what he gave to his own child. Let's put him in jail on the taxpayers dime and then set him free around the time that girl would have been in the prime of her life. If that makes me a harsh punisher, so be it. Fuck letting a degenerate excuse for a human being go on living when he has so meaninglessly thrown away the life of the one person it was his job as a father to protect.

OMG How could someone do something like this and to there own kid. I am sorry to say to any of you that I might party with or do anything else. My kids come first before anyone online does. And if any of my kids are hurt or anything like that and need me I could careless about the mission party or what ever is going on.

Should be stuck in prison for life without parole. Death penalty is for pussies make him live his entire life being ass-raped by bubba.

With the current system of appeals and the like, a life sentence is actually LESS expensive than the death penalty.

That is only because of the appeals process, cut that out and let the blood flow.

This is disgusting... 17 months.. that man is a -monster- and deserves the worst.

The cost of a criminal in prison is something like $30,000 a YEAR that's an average worker's salary here.
They get TV, and weights, and books, and the net... this man should be locked in a cage and fed gruel twice a day in a rat hole until he dies of age/disease/rodent attack.

Arct.. people like you are what make this country turning for the worse. You disgust me.

I feel he'd suffer a lot more if he was stuck in jail for the rest of his life with no chance of ever getting out. Of course, I think he should suffer; he shouldn't be allowed to get what the regular inmates get.
Wow, kid couldn't even defend herself. You're supposed to be able to look to your parents and feel welcomed, feel trust and safe in their arms, and he destroyed that for her, and she had to pay the ultimate penatly.
This guy's a monster.
