so i bought FFVII off ebay the other day and it came in the mail yesterday and i have the keyboard directions for a full key board but my main comp is a peice.. so im trying to play it on my laptop but i cant seem to get it to work, for example when i get to the main title screen it says continue or new game and i cant get the little hand to move up to hit new game and i know im not going to be able to move around when i start it either.. so i was wondering if by chance any one out there could help me out

FF7 doesn't work on anything past windows 98 I believe. At least I've never been able to get past the menu screen on windows 2000 or xp even under compatibility mode (it crashes shortly after loading). Doesn't matter if your main comp is crappy because the game is so old, the system requirement specs are very small.

the patch

there is a patch u can down load if u go to google and type in FFVII xp patch my friend said it works like a charm

I'm not too familiar with the PC version, but I do know it was built on an older version of DirectX. Sometimes older software that needs to talk to older DX API calls has trouble when dealing with DX9. The installation on the Quake2 CD has this problem when it checks DX versions and can't get through the rest of the install procedure.

The solution that I've tried in the past (worked on Quake2 install, Tie Fighter, X-wing vs. Tie Fighter) when playing older games is running in win95 or win98 emulation mode. If you right-click the game shortcut and check out the properties, there is usually a tab that displays the emulation options. It's worth a shot and just might solve the problem with your keyboard input since it's most definitely controlled through DirectX.

Hmm, I tried all the patches that were out a couple years ago and nothing seemed to let it work on anything past win98.

FF7 by default requires the number pad for controls. Most laptops don't have number pads.

Go digging through EIDOS's site for a few minutes, they have a patch which was designes specifically for this issue and it remaps the controls for you.

Also, you could try right clicking the .exe > properties > compatibility > check the box that says compatibility mode > Windows 98/Me.

That's if you're running XP anyway.
