I'm having the most difficult time installing ffxi on my new laptop. I tried installing from cd and it was giving me an error message. I then looked this up and turns out it doesn't support vista. So I download the vista patch or whatever. I get into POL and it updated for an hour. I then tried to press play when it came up and it says its not installed. At first I thought it was because I was in ToAU area and that I needed to install that expansion. I tried installing it and it said that the original game (vanadiel collection) wasn't installed. WTF do I do now?

I'm assuming you've got the DVD collection...

Ok, put in DVD, and open it through my computer so instead of running you are looking at files.

there should be several folders inside, one for each expansion. First run the install1.exe (or whatever it's called) in the first folder, thats ffxi

Repeat this process in order for every folder for each expansion. If it's CDs just stick in CD 2 and install ffxi. FFXI works fine for computer, its just the POL program that has issues.

ALSO make sure you right click the program and hit run as admin, otherwise it gets fucked up. This last one sometimes doesn't need to be done, depends.

There is a patch on PoL you can just DL. Searching qcdn will pull up the correct thread with the correct link. I don't feel like looking it up.

It's not a patch. You have to uninstall FFXI, download and install the Vista PlayOnline from the site, then install FFXI from the disc. It'll detect that PlayOnline is already installed so it'll start installing FFXI.

Well since I'm pretty computer/technologically handicapped I'm making my brother do it. 4.5 hours of updates yay!

You can copy/install ffxi on your pc/laptop without reinstalling if pol reports the game isn't installed by registering the .dll files in the pol folder (regsvr32) and exporting this registry information (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\PlayOnlineUS). If your using x64 version of windows its (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\PlayOnline). This way all you need to do is install pol and not go through 5hrs of updates.
