Does anyone know where my friend can download this? It'd make JP parties a hell of a lot easier for him, seeing as he can read/write/speak Japanese perfect.

Thanks.

You just want the secret JP powers to yourself! :o

Is he worried about the potential GM issues that the IME Windower plugin could bring about?

I constantly used the IME plugin for a good long while, last year. I've been reluctant to use it for some time now, however, due to the mass bannings that have been taking place.

I've often wondered if a GM can even determine "which" client you're using, and even if they could ... if they'd be that much of a hardass. Better safe than sorry -- romaji can be frustrating, but it's preferable to losing my character.

They should ban JP players if they ever touch latin characters. I mean why should they be able to type in English/German/French etc when we can't type in Japanese.

Wow, after reading this. That's crazy. I would say bit torrent would be the only way to get it, unless you know someone who can buy the client in Japan. It's currently sold at 1,900 yen (about 16-17 bucks US).

There were rumors going around that the Japanese font used in the game had various copyrights attached ... and that SE couldn't get legal rights to use it in the United States. Personally, I don't really buy that. I've never, EVER seen it said by Square-Enix itself -- it's always some BS, farfetched, nonsense heard 7th or 8th-hand by someone's brother's cousin's friend's high school gym teacher that has a drinking buddy ... that once worked for Squaresoft.

Myself, I think they made a deliberate decision to "deactivate" the Japanese input system in our version ... it's still in there. All the IME plugin does is reveal it.

I think part of the reasoning behind this decision was an overall impression of American stupidity, ignorance, and lack of education. Many of us are familiar with Final Fantasy IV, for example, but few know that the version of the game originally released in the United States had large parts of the difficulty gutted out of it ... allegedly because the English-speaking audience wouldn't have the patience or brains to sit through such a "wordy" title.

Perhaps they felt that a confusing "language mode" would only serve to anger and infuriate us ... it would be better if they just locked us away from the option altogether, so we couldn't hurt ourselves with it. They'd be lucky if we didn't shriek and hurl rocks at our keyboards, damn dirty apes that we are.

There may also be some sense of cultural "distaste" at the thought of good ol' Nihongo being sullied by inexperienced, English-speaking typists. Any and all Japanese players can read Roman characters (our own alphabet). This is not an exaggeration; they couldn't have graduated from middle school without at least knowing that much.

The same is not true of NA players. To them, Japanese text is a stylized, exotic-looking form of gibberish ... and if we had access to it, well ... I largely suspect that the vast majority of NA-originated Japanese text would be something like the nonsense we see in RMT names. To many l0ling idiots, it would be a toy with which to spam purty squiggles.

That fact aside, I heartily wish they would have just left the option in. It wouldn't have had to be EASY for us to turn it on ... an obscure flag in a configuration file would have been enough. >_<

To Blaze: that's an interesting conversation, though I think the GM was beginning to get a little bored.

Or good old English being sullied by inexperienced Japanese typists? I just find it highly annoying that people who can speak Japanese are unable to do so (excluding romaji of course). It sure as hell would make JP pt's a lot more fun and hell it'd help us Europeans get pt's without having to stay up till past midnight. Which was the main reason I moved to Asura, which i've got to say has been a success. Only pt's I get during EU/JP times are EU ones :).

OMG, while going through the process of getting your leet gears put some focus on getting a leet computer so you can use higher resolutions. You get more than ...10. lines on your screen. :|

way to go sucking up to that GM, lol.

I concur, Winklewil, but then I usually agree with your comments. To the OP: I have numerous friends in Japan, both with JET and people who grew up there. It was pretty easy for me to just get a copy of the game from Japan - granted, I have to be sure to log off and on for mission text... my Japanese isn't nearly that advanced. I would advise against downloading a client from anywhere with a game like this - you cannot be sure that it is secure.

One thing I've noticed is that if I'm on the NA client and get a Japanese-language party invite, the moment I respond in romaji I get told {mistake} or {I'm sorry.} But since I'm not seeing {ミス} or {ごめんなさい。} they no longer want to party with me.

Anyway, じゃね~

Artem's got some Chinese characters in his bazaar comment that read "I speak Chinese" or something. I hope I don't get in trouble for that any time soon. >_>

I'm pretty sure Shoya reported me for cussing him/her out for griefing my friends.

I'm surprised to read that about Shoya.

I had a comment ion my seacom on my mule once, stating that I needed help with the subjob quest. I wasn't shouting for help but apparently he read it and helped my mule get a skull from Gusgen.

This was about a year back though.

Thanks, everyone...

Maybe someone is selling JP FFXI on Ebay for a decent price or something. I, myself, have used the FFXI IME tool before, and I was originally going to get it for my friend, but after some thought, I decided it'd be a bit risky, and Blazeoffury's screenshots basically support my choice.

Thanks, again. I'll let you know what my friend and I end up doing.

I agree, Wink...however there's also the fact that many people who use IME think they can suddenly speak Japanese don't realize the the first thing you type up isn't necessarily the right form you're looking for, and needto spacebar around a bit to find the right phrasing...seen some pretty screwed up phrases because of people not knowing that, actually
