FFXI on a laptop

Just installed ffxi on my laptop and I'm wondering if there's a way to change the buttons for certain functions?

My laptop doesn't have a numeric pad, so I can't do certain things like opening up the menu.

you can use the numeric pad while pressing the function key.. (Fn)
but tbh, its very annoying that's why I use a game pad

I play on my laptop. If you wanna open the menu hit the - key above p and [ I also suggest making sure you set your keyboard on compact instead of full since we don't have a num pad to move with and such

Compact keyboard as said here is your friend. However I agree with my schatz. Get something like an ps2 usb adapter and use your ps2 controller. Much easier.

you can change the key assigned to certain actions, like, say, ctrl+A for range attack, etc in..the configmenu>misc>commands submenu if i recall well.

I prefer to actually not use a controller, so I stick with my keyboard. I have the same functionality as a full keyboard I just had to figure out where some of the other buttons were.

At this point it's just preference. If you wanna play with a controller, go for it. If not the only button that took time to find was the open menu button. Everything else can be done with quick commands such as alt or ctrl + w/e button

Yeah, I'm able to do pretty much everything with the Fn key, but the [-] button doesn't open up the menu for some reason. That's about the only thing I can't do, but it's kind of important -.-

Switching to compact keyboard, is that done in game or in windows?

It's done in game. When, if you figure out how to open the menu it's under config and misc 2 option

Oh, when you have it still on full keyboard setting press either alt or ctrl + the - button to open the menu. Once you set it to compact you won't need to press alt or ctrl, just the - button

With my laptop you have to hit ctrl then the - key. But you have to do it relatively quickly, because it doesn't fire if your macro pallette is staying on your screen while you try and do it. Give that a try and see if it works.

I use a wireless keyboard for my laptop...can't stand compact keyboard despite it's convenience at times. But yet, just hit function -> num lk (in the color coordinated with your function key) -> and the "-" button. Menu *should* come up then.

personally I hate pressing space bar everytime I want to chat. It get's a little annoying at times

Got it to work. Had to press Alt+[-] because Fn+[-] was not working. Compact keyboard works great. I think I like it better.

It took me awhile to get use to the set up, but I agree now that I am use to the controls I think it might be weird to use full keyboard. Either way this game is insanely easy to control keyboard or remote.
