Windurst all the way. Must lucrative starter zones financially because of all the clothcraft materials and beehive chips, not to mention the easy drop rate on yag necklaces for all the saps too lazy to farm them themselves. Easy onion farming so you can bilk cooks like myself. The run to the boat to get to the Dunes can be a rough adventure your first time, but Maze of Shakrami and Buburimu Peninsula are far better areas than the Dunes anyway. People complain about the size of the town, but most of that area isn't used by anyone but its citizens and the warp tarus and mog exits put you close to all the buildings and NPCs you could possibly need.
Sandy is a nice looking town and easy to move around in. Only downside are asshole NPCs and a shitload of elvaan running around being just as prickish with IQ levels closer to their MP pools than their HP numbers. As for Bastok...That place still exists? Most depressing starter zones for sure. Step outside and the terrain is about as appealing as Meriphataud Mountains, but with the lamest beastmen in the game. Free the galka and burn the fucking ghetto down. Shoulda been the humes getting almost wiped out by the anticans, not those loveable fatasses.
