I've seen it for going on 5 years now. I honestly have no idea why it happens, but it does. The general FFXI player is a complete retard in using MMO Metaphors. I didn't mind until lately, when people have been throwing the term "Zerg" around inappropriately. "Zerg(ing,)" or the more commonly used "Rush(ing,)" does not refer to burning through fights as fast as motherfucking possible. Citing it's original source, the very popular RTS StarCraft, you'd clearly see both why your average Joe Otaku would not understand the metaphor, and just use it because they've heard or read it when used in a sentence regarding a boss or other difficult monster from another MMO.

The Zerg race was the weakest of the three, and in no way could they properly burn down Terran or Protoss units, who were more powerful, in a unit for unit fight. The key to a player using Zerg, were it's production cost, and speed of fielding units. Generally speaking, Zerg units required less resources and time to build up(Specifically the Zergling, from which the tactic is derived from.) The benefit to this was it enabled the player, as a Zerg Overlord, to develop a keen ability to disregard unit survivablity for a Human Wave-style offensive. This results in completing your objectives at the result of heavy casualties.

Thats right, reading FFXI Player. The term "Zerg" in an MMO is used to describe a battle in which you have no regard to the penalty of death. This means, in a round about way, you just swarm a monster with as many players as you possibly can muster, and if they die, they retrieve their corpse(or are resurrected with the cheapest/fastest option available) and fight again, likely dying a second, third, or nineth time. As many and as often as it takes until your target is defeated. Quite the opposite to how you, or maybe a linkshell member uses the term, "Zerging" is often a slower tactic compared to a well constructed one. Although a quick and properly executed strategy has very little room for error, Zerging is built entirely on error. You accept it will happen, because in all likelihood, it will. Over and over again.

However, due to a seemingly unlimited about of players fighting the target because of running back to the fight shortly after dying, you eventually overcome your foe and defeat it. This makes using "Zerging" to describe a tactic in FFXI impossible because of how corpse mechanics operate - and paints anyone who uses it to look like a buffoon to a non-FFXI Player(or a FFXI Player more knowledgable to other MMOs.)

On another note: Only really used by pick up raids, "Zerg" is not a label to be throwing around proudly, as it is almost exclusively used tactically by the most under-equipped, or under-experienced players.

A solution to your problem with this metaphor, is to use something else - something more applicable to a hastey kill - Burning down, racing, blitzkrieg, etc.

I feel like a hole in my life has just been filled by this priceless nugget of knowledge.

Thank you Skaw.

Thank you.

Im going to go out on a limb here and say that most people that misunderstand what zerging means think it means zerking, as in berserking, as in "attacking wildly."

Zerging does work as a mmo metaphor in a fashion, though. Zerg overwhelmed their opponents by their sheer numbers and speed, which is easily incorporated into an MMO by using a party/alliance to overwhelm a mob(s) with numbers/force, basically requiring no tactics at all (basically like TP burn pt's, har har.)

Do the most damage you can in the smallest amount of time with what resources you have.

words do evolve.
ie:gay use to mean happy now it means homooooooo
still i still think its cool how certain terms came about.

I still feel it shares the same principals, as ruffy stated in a previous post. I played Starcraft as well and know where the term originated. But even now it is basically the same thing, selflessly throwing the group you have at whatever your target may be in hopes you will overwhelm the enemy.

Huh?!

Terms don't have to mean the same thing between each MMO. Like people use "Raids" in WoW which is an event of somesort, and when people use the term "Raid" in FFXI, it refers to any event in general, Sky, Sea, Limbus, Dynamis ect.

Nice try though.

And thank you for the completely useless information about another game, that I don't play or care about. I'm now aware there is a race called "Zerg" I feel enlightened.

Real men fight weakened.

Who's up for a KV blitzkrieg in 3 hours? Anyone???

So kinda like Epic ls, they zerg everything, rofl. MOAR PEEPS

Technically, the zerging term still applies, since you're just rushing into the fight with as many people as you can get. If you die, you're dropped out of the alliance and replaced, provided you have enough people. That players are much more survivable than a common zergling is largely irrelevant, because they're still doing the exact same thing, swarming a monster with as many people as they can. If the death mechanics worked a little differently, then the FFXI zerg term would perfectly match the Starcraft term; since you could just get up and keep fighting; or if you just brought a shitload of people to a fight.

The term "Zerg Rush" wasn't some existential strategy where you stop caring about your losses; it reflected an early attack in the game that was designed to inflict massive amounts of damage within a short period of time. The fact that you used as many of the cheapest and fastest-producing units you could make before the attack was part of it's strength, but the lack of caring about your losses didn't really come up. I've talked about zerging events to friends of mine that have never played FFXI, or played it 4 years ago before the term was ever used in the game; and they instantly knew what I was describing.

Yes, there are other terms which describe the same actions, while not being potentially confused with a similar term from another game; but at the same time, they're close enough as it is that there shouldn't be any real confusion to begin with.

I can't wait for tomorrows lesson on l33tsp3ak. I'm gonna get so many bitches with that in my repertoire.

The most misused word on QCDN by far is "epic". According to most people here, almost anything you can do in this game is "epic".

Corrected.

In before Myrrh claims to have taken an epic dump.
