I've seen it for going on 3-4 years now. I honestly have no idea why it happens, but it does. The general FFXI player is a complete retard in using FPS Metaphors. I didn't mind until lately, when people have been throwing the term "Camp" around inappropriately. "Camp(ing)" does not refer to sitting for 3 hours waiting for an NM to pop!!11!! Citing it's original source, the very popular (insert first ever mmofps name here), you'd clearly see both why your average FPS Doug would not understand the metaphor, and just use it because they've heard or read it when used in a sentence regarding an NM or other difficult monster from another MMO.
Camping in computer gaming jargon describes the practice of a player staying in one area of the game world waiting for enemies or useful objects to appear or to come to the player rather than actively seeking them out, thus allowing a quick and cheap kill without removing yourself form the safety of hiding. Players camp in order to gain an advantage over their opponents.
Thats right, reading FFXI Player. The term "Camp" in an FPS is used to describe a place where you wait with a sniper or long range weapon. This is done to guard or cover a spot where the opponent walks/runs by occasionally, allowing you to preform an easy and cheap kill via HEADSHOT. As many times as it takes to make your kill count to skyrocket to unpredictable levels. Quite the opposite to how you, or maybe a linkshell member uses the term, "Camping" is often a slower tactic compared to a well constructed one. Although a quick and properly executed strategy has very little room for cheap shots, Camping is built entirely on killing before being seen.
This makes using "Camping" to describe a tactic in FFXI impossible because of how impossible it is to kill a NM without being aggroed - and paints anyone who uses it to look like a buffoon to a non-FFXI Player(or a FFXI Player more knowledgeable to other MMOs.)
On another note: Only really used by Rangers, "Camp" is not a label to be throwing around proudly, as it is almost exclusively used tactically by Ninjas and Rangers with powerful long-range weapons, with the occasional thief.
A solution to your problem with this metaphor, is to use something else - something more applicable to a hasty kill - Hunting, Farming NMs, Waiting For an NM to Pop (WFANTP)
There you go Skaw, knocked another metaphor off your list. Which one are you gonna in-depthly explain to us next, about how it was originally contrived in another game and we're using it wrong.
You gonna keep going on about how a term used in a totally different game, from a totally different genre, should be used the exact same way in this one?
Or you gonna shut up about it now? >_> No one gives a F*** about how the zerglings would overthrow their opponents via sheer numbers and brute force. It's a term, it's commonly accepted, and if we understand what our alliance leader means when he states, "We're gonna Zerg Kirin," It gets the job done.
Get your panties out of a knot and get over your little pet peeves.
