I wasn't sure where to put this, but this seemed like the place so I'll just post here.

Ever since I got my new computer, FFXI has gotten into the habit of spazzing out whenever certain graphics come into play. The screen becomes a bunch of lines, I can't do anything in game, but I can get back to desktop by ctrl+alt+del and POL says full screen mode was cancelled something technical etc.

The things that usually set it off are summoning spells, a few abilities by certain mobs, teleport spells, and sometimes I think it just wants to throw a bitch fit cause my camera angle doesn't agree with it. Weather like dust storms and blizzards make it spaz too. I've turned as many of these effects off as I can. But sometimes it still goes to the screen of lines, and I don't know why.

I am by no means technologically minded. The advice that I've gotten from others suggests that it has something to do with the game and how it interacts with my video card. I have an NVidia, pretty new, but I can't figure out what the exact name is :?

If anyone else has had experience with the same problem, or has any idea on how I could fix or at least improve this, please let me know. I'm desperate.

Sorcha out.

Ya I had the same problem with FFXI on the PC I would play on where sandstorms would cause me to lag. I never really had a problem with spells though. Maybe fix your graphic settings in ffxi config, or download mogtoolz.

Does this happen?

I have a Nvidia card in my PC and this happened since the card was installed.

The temp solution I found was to switch on limewire, disconnect it, close it, and FFXI would work fine, don't ask me why, It's a mystery to me.

Anyways, is this what happens when an avatar is summoned in front of you in game?

I understand that you're not quite sure "which" Nvidia model you have, but your absolute FIRST step into fixing this issue would be determining that. You've got to know your model, make, and driver version (among other things) in order to begin troubleshooting what's going on.

Second, you should update to your most current drivers, and see if that fixes anything.

Third, do a bit of research (usually, a simple Google search with your video card information and FFXI's name is enough) to see if you can find mention of this problem by other people. Your hits will generally be results from tech support forums, and if you're lucky, you'll find threads in which people describe the problem, people help them troubleshoot, and an eventual resolution is posted. You'll also want to search the knowledgebase and FAQ at Geforce's website.

After you do all of that, you're almost certain to have:

A) Found the solution to your problem, and fixed it, or ...
B) Determined that while it is a known issue, there's no current solution available to you, and you'll just have to live with it.

If you need help getting started with any one of those steps, let me know, and I'll see if I can't be a bit more specific.

I haven't updated my drivers in about a year for my Nvidia card and my game is working fine. When I tried updating them in February/March, I started having a bunch of problems playing videos on my computer so I rolled back and that fixed it. I don't remember if there were any issues with playing FFXI though, but you might have a similar issue.

It depends on the model of video card you have and which drivers you use. I've played this game with 3 different Nvidia cards now, and had to make extensive driver tests to get the best ones for each card, took me 10-15 sets of drivers to get the perfect ones for my card this time around, lol. But it's worth it, remember because some drivers are newer than others doesn't mean they're better. My suggestion would be, find out your video card model, find when it was released, then on Nvidia.com check for the driver archive and look for drivers released around the time your card was released, usually the initial release drivers for your card are good, from then on you can try each newer version after that and keep the ones just before your game gets crappy. If you really wanna get the *perfect* drivers, check out www.guru3d.com, they even have the beta drivers, in my case a beta release was the best for my card.

Suggestion, if you have an Nvidia FX 5200-5900 try the 56.64 drivers
for Nvidia GT 6000+ use 66.03

It's hard to describe them, cause I've never been able to get a screenshot of them. It's a lot like when a tv goes snowy, but the snow has organized itself into parallel lines. I can't see any of the menus or the chat, or any outlines of anything on the screen. Just lines.

And thanks to a helpful boyfriend, I have managed to fumble onto the name of my card. I have an NVidia GeForce 7900 GT/GTO. The driver version is 94.24 (I just updated it, as recommended here.) I have my resolution at 1280 x 1024 (32 bits)(72Hz)

My computer is just over a year old, it was made by UnitedMicro. I really hope I don't need a new card, and nothing else on the computer glitches like this. Of course Squeenix would find a way to screw with my fancy new computer.

I don't know if updating it has helped or not, because it's a bit random and I can never really predict when the screen is going to go nuts. Hopefully it has, but I appreciate anymore advice anyone has to offer, and the advice you all have given me so far. Thank you :-)

Sorcha out.

It sounds to me like you're having the same problem I did after coming back *waves*, sometimes when your screen resolution and background resolution aren't the same it seems to create problems. Or at least it did with me.

To fix the problem I originally used POLUtils which would basically perform the reg hack without having to go into the registry. If you need instructions for how to do the registry hack to change your resolution there are a lot of sources online or I'm sure someone else here could point you in the right direction, it's fairly simple and a lot of players use it.

Might not work for you, but it has always fixed that problem for me whenever I've had it.
