I was talking to this friend of my brother's last night and we got on the topic of Final Fantasy, and he mentioned that FFXIII will be the last Final Fantasy game, ever. Something about how the two dudes in charge split up, one went Microsoft and is working on some RPG for the XBox360, which I refuse to buy. Can't be too sure about what he said, it's all a bit hazey.

So anyway, does anyone know if this has any merit to it or has anyone else heard anything like that?

Lies, SE will keep making FF games, and MW(Sakaguchi's company, 360 titles) will keep making their games, FF will still be there as long as it keeps making money, and FFXIII will, after all there's already 3 planned games in the FFXIII universe, and 2-3 more that haven't been revealed. I'm sure FFXIV has been in planning stages for a while now.

No Uematsu and Sakaguchi means it's more or less a different franchise though =/

Uematsu is half the game the music rocks in those games. I have all the midi files on my computer lol.

They'll keep pumping out sequels as long as there's money to be made.... just like the endless stream of horror movies with Roman numerals in their titles. When we get to Final Fantasy 34: Squall Takes Manhattan, we'll know they've run out of steam and are just making shit up.

Well, Uematsu haven't been with a lot of games since FFVII. I don't think he did anything on FFXII, and I still think its an aweome game.

lost odyssey is going to rival FF hardcore for anyone who has seen the trailer. its breath taking. Its that company will be xbox's SE. while SE still makes games occasionally for that system of course.
But i pre ordered lost odyssey the day i saw the trailer and it wont even be out till may.
Its planned to be sold out in pre orders soon, they only had like 4 left when i went to gamestop.

FF series might continue, but it'll probably spiral downhill like the SaGa series did.

That is, Great->Mediocre->Why the hell does this PS2 game have NES graphics.

Not necessarily at THAT quick of a rate, but I'm sure the series will lose it's quality pretty rapidly if they go on.

The SaGa series was good to begin with?!? I played both the first and second on PS1, if those were the originals, I hated both those games, maybe part 2 was semi-decent, but the first was utter garbage.

The FF series might go slightly downhill since losing Uematsu and Sakaguchi, but I doubt it'll ever turn into a subpar franchise, it's just too important to S-E to let it go to waste.

well, final fantasy 1 was suppossed to be the FINAL one.
but, it made money so they kept going, if they didnt stop at their suppossedly final one i doubt theyll stop anytime soon.

I saw the trailer and while it looks awesome visually, when the cutsceen gave way to the game play it looked kind of basic. I am not going to crown it "the best" or condemn it on one trailer but while visually I was impressed overall I was underwhelmed. Now White Knight Story looks to be the truth.

Didnt this split happen years back? I remember Uematsu stopped being a direct employee of Square and making his own company.

what trailer did you see? i saw the big war one followed by tons of playing footage, it looked like an upped FF type game with some awesome lookin stuff going on. im not deeming it the best either, since assasins creed looks damn good too. but i know its going to be one of the best rpgs in awhile

Trailer had big scripted battle that led into the main character fighting a swarm of enemies. At that point it switched to player controlled and it appeared as though he just picked a random cluster of enemies and did a basic sword attak over and over againwhile being somewhat counter attacked (most attacks missed/blocked and when he was hit it was for single digit damage), that led up to the "boss" fight with one of the tower destroying machines. In which he seemed to just do a basic attack maybe 3 times to destroy it and then lava started to pour out of the sky. Looked awesome but the battle system seemed lacking to me. It was just a demo though, so I am waiting to hear more indepth explaination on the battle system.

Eye candy = wow
Gameplay = iffy to me.

Edit: This one http://gamevideos.com/video/id/6161

Edit2: Watched it again and I liked the battle system a little more. Probably would help if I could read Japanese. Still I am not a fan of him blocking almost all the attacks and being able to one shot ~3 enemies at a time. I guess for the demo it works and they have time to tweak the difficulty still.

SE is stupid if they stop making the cash crop called Final Fantasy.

No shit! That game looks unbelievable. Too bad I'm not willing to dish out $600 on release day. I'll wait till a game comes out that I -really- want before paying that much for a system, like FFXIII.

PS2 > Gamecube for openers, and it retained that status. Wii > PS3 so far.

EDIT: This quote is in referance to FFXIII

One claim made about the game is that the transition from real-time gameplay to FMV will be nearly impossible to distinguish due to the graphical capabilities of the Playstation 3.

Damn.

The rumor stems from a poorly translated interview regarding final fantasy 13, in which the developer mentioned that "the fate of final fantasy XIII is under serious consideration."

They were talking about the numberings of the games at the time that the comment was made, so they may have been talking about dropping the number at the time and giving it a subtitle. They could have also been referring to it moving to the PS3 or staying on the PS2. Or they could have meant that FF13 would be a massively overhauled Final Fantasy. They did not, and have subsequently confirmed, that the series isn't ending at or after 13.

I wish they would start a new mainstream RPG series though. We need a truly mainstream, massive, non-niche RPG that carries its own legends and NONPLAYABLE elements and over into each game while keeping the game itself an independent, novel play experience. I'm sick of Star Oceans and Tales games to the point where I don't even bother with the 2nd-class RPGs. I'm sick of Zeldas where each new game is just a sad mod pack you pay full price for. The only things I pick up nowadays are DQ, FF, and original new titles in hopes that they will become a new MAINSTREAM series. Playing to niche groups who play their "unique" game because no one else does has killed the heyday of the RPG.

So yeah, the FF13 being the last one was a myth that's been going on around for about 2 years.

Uematsu's last project with Square-Enix was Advent Children.

He did the music for 8 and 9. Not sure about 10/10-2.
