Square Enix TGS Lineup
FFXIII, Dragon Quest IX and... the return of Tobal?
by Anoop Gantayat

US, September 3, 2007 - Square Enix's Tokyo Game Show lineup, announced today in Tokyo, is full of surprises, both good and bad. It turns out, for instance, that Dragon Quest IX will be shown, although in video form only. Also surprising is the video-only showing of The Last Remnant. That game appeared to be far enough along at the Square Enix Party earlier this year that we were expecting a playable debut.

But the biggest surprise is the return of Tobal. That's right, the classic Square Enix fighter will be making its return in playable form at TGS. But there's a catch. Like Parasite Eve's return at the Square Enix Party, the new Tobal game is for cell phones. Attendees will have to look for Tobal M in the company's iMode corner. You can get your first look now at the official Square Enix Tobal M site.

Here's a full list of games currently set for display at the Square Enix booth. Bear in mind that this is only the current list of titles; Square Enix usually has a few surprises that are unveiled at the show.

Playable
Dragon Quest IV (DS)
Chocobo's Mysterious Dungeon (Wii)
Final Fantasy IV (DS)
Final Fantasy Tactics A2 (DS)
Crisis Core FFVII (PSP)
Final Fantasy CC: Ring of Fates (DS)

Dragon Quest Mobile (mobile)
Ganmoba Comics (mobile)

Dragon Quest IX (DS)
Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy XIII (PS3, cell)

Dragon Quest Monsters Battle Road (arcade)
Dragon Quest Monsters Joker (DS)
Slime Mori Mori Dragon Quest 2 (DS)

TGS kicks off on the 20th. We'll have full coverage from the show floor.

Although it's a movie, it should provide some good eye candy to get our appetites going ^^

I'm also looking forward to FFIV and FFTA2 for the DS =D

hehe.. kids corner :P amusing. Why is SE so obsessed with Cell Phones? :|

Japanese cell phones are like mini-supercomputers

Exactly, they won't have to release them here because Phones made by the US and UK are a load of crap! Exactly the reason why we don't have Before Crisis... yet!

Anyways, Japanese phones can even download barcodes to buy bottled water!! :omg:

Screw XIII, the biggest thing in that list I want is the DS version of IV.

I found this in the PS3 articles, but you do have a huge point, FFIV DS is gonna be huge.

I didn't like XII, so I aint really too stoked about XIII.

IV on the other hand I loved in it's first incarnation.

Why you would ever need a phone that does anything but call people I'll never understand, but to each their own. I suppose it's somewhat convenient to have one that can take decent quality pictures, but that's about as far as that goes.

Japan also has a much better 3G network infrastructure compared to the U.S., which is still mostly 2G TDMA. Basically Japanese cell phones have the equivalent of DSL speeds from 4-5 years ago, whereas most U.S. cell phones cannot even get to 56k dialup throughput.

This means Japanese phones have had several years to improve video displays, which are now much better suited to gaming than, for example, the widespread piece of shit known as the RAZR.

Heh, I still use the Nokia brick lookin' phone. It's not pimp but like Antor, I don't see why people need more use of a phone other than makin' or receiving calls. They could have fkin' T1 Gajillitron -MECH- phones and I'd still be happy with my brick.

Thats kinda like saying "Why would anyone want a DS or PSP because I have a Game&Watch"

Not...really. DS and PSP actually push the limits of handheld gaming capabilities and are a huge upgrade over previous versions, like the Game&Watch. Cellphones are meant to call people. The Nokia brick he is talking about is actually the same phone I have, an is actually one of the best phones I have ever used. The reason your analogy is wrong is because in this sense, the relationship of Nokia between newer models such as the stupid Razr and other new phones is actually the opposite of the DS/PSP and Game&Watch.

Well the question was why would anyone want a phone that could have 256k connection and HD video with an attachable microwave that can be ordered from the Netherlands. They have games for their phones out there because their phones can handle it. And since the general phone can handle it, SE makes games for it.

Saying something is only meant for this single thing and thats final is kinda close minded, if cavemen had passed that along we would still be beating lizards with a rock. I can agree with the fact that technically phones are just meant for call/text message, but I guess I dont see why you would want to pass up upgrading the phone to be able to handle more things.

Like Game&Watch -> DS, Game&Watch is old is black and white, however it pulls off its 'absolute single duty', which is to play games. Given the option to upgrade to DS, seems kinda obvious one would jump at the opportunity.

If only the Japanese phones can dominate over in the US and UK, my phone, my mum's phone, and my sister's phone all run out of battery power after a week... fully charged too... plus they are useless shit. Anyways, the Japanese could probably monopolize the phone world with they're godlike cell phones, Japanese phones can do everything and anything! Create working barcodes to scan onto vending machines, properly use GPS on a phone, call people, defeat godzilla (lol).

This is the reason why we don't have Before Crisis in English. Hmm, If I import a brand new Japanese phone, would it work in the UK... gah forget it.

I don't think any of you realize how much more expensive it is to have a basic phone plan in Japan, either. You Japanophiles really need a good dosage of reality.

There's nothing really superior about a cell phone that has a Hello Kitty themed menu system and doubles as a functional dildo. But have fun with your Razrs and iPhones or whatever the hell you think is cool. The rest of the world is content with a normal phone. If I wanted to listen to music I'd use an iPod or some other mp3 player, and if I wanted to play a handheld game you sure as hell won't catch me walking around with an n-taco. I don't care about what amazing game is coming out for cell phones; they should focus more on providing me cellular services such as... oh... communicating to people, whether that be through text messages (which I personally dislike) or talking. The only extension on phone features that I even consider remotely useful is having a camera in your phone because it's actually situationally convenient.

There's a limit to how much a device really needs to do. I guess you guys think those refrigerators with TVs in them is a good idea too, huh?

Clearly the entire world is exactly like you, hell after reading that I feel the need to throw away my pc, tv, phone, clock radio, all my gaming systems.

Seriously the world needs to run on the bare minimum, because who gives a crap about art, creativity, and convenience. My clock doesn't need to do anything but tell me the time, my tv and computer I don't even need because its all for entertainment. Seriously my phone has a screen on it and thats way over the top, I don't see why phones have changed any since the 90s anyways, I was fine with the walkie talkie-esque look and size.

I don't really understand your argument. Yes, if you could have a cell phone that worked well and a game handheld that worked well, OR an n-gage that did both shittily, of course you would prefer two over one.

However, if you had one device that played music, movies, browsed the internet and fetched email, let you make voice, video, and text messaging and played high-quality games on an excellent display with superior, ergonomic controls, why on earth would you prefer to carry around 6 devices that did the same things just because they were solely devoted to their individual tasks?

To me, I encourage things like the iPhone because they're stepping stones on the way to my personal dream gadget. And I covet the japanese cell phones because they are more advanced than ours, closer to the dream. This is evidenced by the fact that major game companies are devoting time and resources to developing long-standing intellectual properties into games for these phones, which people are subsequently purchasing. The fact that you think it's silly really comes from the laggard state of our own phones, which lead you to believe that only a DS or PSP can perform to modern gaming standards. Until you've played whatever games they are releasing on the platform they are released to, you're not really in a position to judge.

Why release one of the best franchises ever on a mobile phone???? Noooooooo

Make Tobal 3 for next gen bitches!
