This isn't EQ... I doubt that at current rates all the servers they have up now will be around 1 year from now. I give FFXI 5 years before SE pull the plug. It just wasn't thought out enough.
No, it's not. But Square-Enix has other sources of income that can keep the game going with a low subscriber rate. SOE does not, but yet EverQuest remains. And has a lot more active server content than FFXI, requiring more upkeep. FFXI will still be profitable with a subscriber count well below EQ's current amount.
Square-Enix has their many franchises they can theoretically pull reserves for the game from the profits. SOE only really has EverQuest. Star Wars Galaxies was killed. EverQuest 2 is less popular than EverQuest 1. PlanetSide has been on the backburner ever since Core Combat, but even then it didn't pull many subscribers to begin with. Does anyone even play The Matrix Online? EQ's subscriber count peaked below FFXI's peak(550k vs. 650k.) As well, it's decline has not been as sharp as EQ's. July '05 to July '06, EQ suffered almost 300,000 subscriptions. FFXI only 150,000 and has remained pretty steady around the 500,000 mark up until the mass cheater/rmt bannings.
A lot of people forget that this is the 4th biggest subscription-based MMO in the world. Behind WoW(#1,) Lineage(#2) and Lineage II(#3.) Considering it has no Korean servers, it might as well be #2.
EverQuest has been around for going on 8 years. FFXI has been around for going on 5, and is already showing signs of atleast matching EQ's current streak. Their subscriber increase trend is largely the same, with FFXI going higher in count, but FFXI's drop-off is no where near as quick as EQ's. Yet, anyway.
In the two years since EQ's peak, 400,000 people have quit it. In the year since FFXI's "peak," only that 100. In the same time since EQ's peak, FFXI has lost a "net" of 50,000 subscribers(barring the last few months.) I see EQ stopping at a decade old. I see FFXI matching that with ease. Hell, Ultima Online *IS* hitting 10 years old.
