FFXIV 4.2 out of 10

Despite a few obvious mistakes made during the review, to be honest, I think the majority of it is fairly accurate.

Sadly.

I have to agree with that review, ffxiv is HIGHLY unpolishe, even moreso than ffxi was upon its release.

It's important to note that most NA didn't see FFXI at release, since we didn't get it until a year and a half or so later.

There was an update log of FFXI pre-NA release floating around here some time ago. Suffice to say, FFXI was probably just as broken as XIV is at release.
Not that that excuses SE for practically releasing a pay-to-play beta, but it'll probably be all spruced up by the time the PS3 release rolls around.

Many of ff14's problems were noted in alpha/closed beta and open beta (not on se forums) , yet they went unfixed. Not sure why the didn't go with what worked near perfect in ff11. I think ff14 deserves the bashing for repeating a ff11 release/dev cycle. Release = bare-bones, then add in basic game play components every few months, while taking longer to fix major/minor issues. I understand this is how most if not all mmo releases go, but coming from ff11 they could have done better. On a positive note, my fav parts about ff14 are the large zones and the emote animations.

I guess cause I'm a patient person, going into playing FFXIV from OB and CE (Collector's Edition) release, I didn't expect a lot to be completely right. To me this review was a bit critical like the reviewer had no patience and wanted to be spoon-fed everything. That's just me. FFXIV is still worth it but if you're the type that wants to burn through stuff all night and all day long then....yeah. Its weird I agree and but I disagree with some of it.

*sigh*

When will it get through those reviewers thick skulls that they shouldn't review an MMO within the first two weeks of release?

General rule is that absolutely no MMO is perfect on release, it will take time for both the release version players and the developers to get a sense of balance when it comes to post release bug fixes and content patches.

When will it get through these developer's thick skulls that two weeks may well be all they have before people stop playing their broken games?

And yes, we all realize that no MMO is perfect on release. But there are certain minimum expectations of functionality that FFXIV currently does not meet.

I'm still playing the game, when I can. PL 15, 10 PGL, and a variety of other Hand/Land between 2 and 9, but that doesn't alter the fact that, unless drastic additions are made, I probably will not continue playing past the free period, and will likely set it aside until March to see if it improves with the PS3 release.

I agree with some of it and disagree with some of it. I actually like crafting, where as the reveiwer sees it as some boring chore when you can't level.

But the truest thing he said was that SE should be ashamed to have released something this unfinished.

I knew it wasn't going to be perfect upon release, but this game is a long way away from what it should have been when released. There are basic things that one would have expected, and some glaring things that should have been taken care of between the release of beta and the actual release of the game.

I'm still having fun with it though, but for God's sake they need to fix the targeting.

An Auction House, Mail service, better targeting, better responsiveness across the board, etc, etc, etc. I'm not busting SE's balls for lack of content, or for the stilted nature of the main quest lines, I'm fine with that. I'm just irritated that some of the most basic features of any functional MMO are missing from FFXIV.

This is my main issue. The controls, menu selections, etc should be responsive, not laggy like they are in FFXIV. Even with macros, skill changes and the like seem to not respond quickly enough. I'll give FFXIV some time, but I'm still disappointed.

The sound effects thing was just the reviewer nit-picky imo. When you're running or walking on the same type of surface in real life you're going to hear the same sound to some degree.

But if anything reviewing a MMO this soon after it's release was kinda stupid, developer blunders and hot messes or not....

Compared to other games this is relatively bug free. Are there bugs? Yeah. There's always bugs with MMOs though. This time however, I feel as if their response time is actually better than it was before.

There are times on WOW where I'd still have the ground disappear and have everything just fall with me. It took a complete restart to fix the problem, and half the time I would be in an inaccessible spot for me to corpse run.

I played the day of release with Wow. There was a glitch where you could fall off the face of the game. You could also get trapped inside of tree's and fall through then down mountains at release.

In all fairness, no game is ready at release. It's just when it's close enough, the put it out and get what money they can. However, in relativity, times a different in Sept/Oct of 2010 than Nov 2004. Consumers expect more because they already have more with their current mmo. It's not such a new ground expansion as before so you need to deliver a more complete product.

I agree with the majority of the sentiments in this thread. I love the new system and the upside this game brings, especially for myself as a traditionally casual gamer, but I'd give the game a 5/10 right now, and most of my rating would come off the potential of the game and not the actual current gameplay.

I have continued to play a few hours here and there, but it's kind of a catch 22 for myself at this point: Quit for a while and fall pretty far behind my friends and LS mates, or play and become frustrated with each passing minute, which is NOT the feeling I should be generating while playing a video game =/

Though the review was a little harsh in some areas I have to generally agree with it. I've been feeling like I'm playing an unfinished game. The only way to fix this is to actually fix the problems and add the new content as quickly as possible via patches. Things simply can't wait for March to get better or else I can easily see more than half the starting player base leaving for greener pastures, and FFXIV itself slowly crumbling doom at it's own unfinished hands.

With Guild Wars 2 on the horizon, not to mention a gaggle of other new upcoming mmos many people will quickly lose interest in FFXIV. As pretty as it is, and it definitely is the best looking MMO on the market, no matter how much you polish a pebble it's still a pebble. I'd like to see FFXIV do well, but if things stay as they are right now that simply won't ever happen.

I'm ok with the game having bugs etc etc. at the beginning of an MMO too. But SE should have learned a lot of things coming from FFXI. What was the rush of getting XIV out so fast? GW2, Old Republic? The only thing they learned seem to try to protect themselves from botting and 3rd party software by running everything server side lol. I would have been happy at launch if they would have improved what the community wanted to be improved. Content? They can add it later it's no biggy, we got everything we need atm. But basic gameplay? come on we need that lol.

Cataclysm is what they were hoping to get ahead. If they waited a month or two, to finish the game, they'd be releasing too close to the expansion for WOW which wouldn't be a good thing, imo.

The game in its current form is not great but I knew that from the beta. I see the potential and am hopeful but I am not overly inspired to grind at the moment. I will keep playing but this will certainly be a game I play casually until I see some of this potential come into reality.
