Surprised it's not up here yet, but keep in mind that sankakucomplex is NOT a good source for reliable information.

A senior Square Enix employee is being reported as publically saying that Final Fantasy XI will terminate in 2010, to be replaced by Final Fantasy XIV.

The remark was apparently made by one of Square Enix’s top HR people at the “Square Enix Recruiting Seminar 2011,” and duly reported on a personal blog by an attendee:

“I think some amongst you will know, but FF11 started in 2002 … Well, this year it’ll end and the stage will shift to FF14.”

The witness suspects the remark was inadvertent, but it is adamant it was made. Oddly, first the article and then the entire site which reported the remark were taken down shortly after.

Square Enix has previously assured players that any shutdown of the game would be announced a year in advance, so just what is going on is not clear.

A tweet from Square Enix’s CEO also denies the rumour, saying “that’d be troubling,” although this apparent rebuttal is rather short on details, such as whether the remarks were actually made and whether there is anything to them…

In any case, with the sequel nearing release and the original game increasingly showing its age, the day of any shutdown must be close at hand, and it seems pertinent that one of 2ch’s threads on the subject is entitled “How many people will commit suicide when FF11 ends?”

I call bs on that. Ending support for in-game modifications/storyline, I'd understand, closing the game off, no. Even if I switch I'll keep my ffxi account active. As long as Square is making money out of it, they'll milk it to the last possible drop.

Indeed. I wouldn't be overly surprised if most of the development ends this year, to be replaced by a focus on FFXIV, but turning off the game servers makes very little sense, given how many people still play the game.

We may well see server consolidation after XIV comes out, of course, but I really doubt they'll turn it off so long as they have a reasonable level of subscribers.

Breaking news: Sankaku Complex is attempting to report on extremely unreliable information in order to stir up drama.
Full story at 11.

I believe I read somewhere that the FFXI servers are paid up till 2012 so even if development stops this year we'd still have a world to run about in for awhile. Besides I cant see SE losing out if they have both games on at the same time, imagine how many addicted players will attempt to play both games. ^^

yayyyy it's ending i can quittttt

No you can't. I never said you were allowed to stop yet.

Its not gonna happen, as long as FFXI makes money they'll keep it going.

I'm guessing its a mistranslation, misinterpretation or misunderstanding. He likely meant to say something along the lines of some of the FFXI won't get as much focus anymore, and that some of the staff working on it will move on to FFXIV or something, not that they completely stop supporting it.

Completely stopping FFXI support would be like Smirnoff stop making unflavored vodka when they make flavored one.

Basically, it won't happen, until they no longer profit from it.

FFXI brings in way to much money for them to just end it like that. it is a busness, and it all comes down to profit. they are not going to put all there egg's in one basket anyway. if they did end FFXI it wouldn't be until they we're 100% shure the new one was a big win for them. until they stop makeing money off it they will run both.

I wouldn't really count on it. I know that I'm a bit skeptical about the new game. For some people, the feel just won't be the same. I'm less inclined to abandon a character on which I've spent a very significant amount of time for something new for the sake of being new.

If I get a shot at the beta, it may change my mind. Otherwise, I seriously doubt I'll purchase a copy of FFXIV.

Don't count the eggs before they're hatched, etc.

The game is totally ending now that they're going to raise the level cap to 99 with all new related content. >_>

i actually think the 99 cap will make a lot of people quit lol.

I, too, call shenanigans on that one. SE wouldn't shut down their biggest cash cow right after announcing so many new things for said game.

As long as there is interest in FFXI and it makes money, SE will keep it going. They have more to worry about how XIV is going to be right now. For all we know, it could end up being a massive flop.

2011 will be the true determiner of FFXI's future.

EQOA for PS2 is still going (though hardly updated at all) and how many people play that? Can't be more than 10,000

I sure do hope that work on the Exodus server is finished before SE decides to pull the plug, if ever.

I doubt we'll see an Exodus server that is more than partially-function or hokey at best. Unless someone manages to procure a copy of the server images, duplicating FFXI's functionality from the ground up would be an immensely laborious and time-consuming task, especially when things of this nature are free (and therefore unpaid) for fear of legal action when a price-tag is affixed to them.
