Not only applying to FFXI, but after...what... FFV...FFVI, something like that, what happened to the -aja spells?

For those of you who don't know, the spell system in Final Fantasy started with simple names.

Bolt
Bolt II etc.

Then it evolved....sorta.

Thunder
Thundara

Well, from this time, there were four tiers of magic.

Base level (Thunder)
Tier II (Thundara)
Tier III (Thundaga)
Tier IV (Thundaja)

I don't remember when they dissapeared, but at least one did remain. (Gravaja - AoE Gravity/Demi)

Then they suddenly reappeared again in FFXII (Curaja ftw!)

Anyone know why in particular?

and:

Do you think at any point down the line they WILL add -aja spells to FFXI? Or will they just keep increasing the numbers? (Thundaga XXI)!
Or do you think that the spells have pretty much reached their peak?

What game did the -aja tier come in? I don't understand after reading your post, and i can't think of a single game where i saw that suffix.

I know in the Japanese version of FF...4, I believe it was, the spells went, for example, Fire -> Fira -> Firaga -> Firaja. They were choosable between One or all targets, so there weren't different names for the "aoe" versions...
Technically, since FFXI has tier 1-4 spells, they already exist.

Now, I KNOW its wikipedia. I KNOW its not completely reliable, but I think it has just enough to spark my interest.

But this is the whole reason I asked here in the first place. Wikipedia isnt the best...

Plus, im not saying it applied only to an AoE variant. Im just saying thats how it was applied to gravaja.

I...don't see what you're getting at...?
Could you try to clarify? 'Cause I seriously don't understand. In FFXI the AOE variant of Gravity is Graviga...
And in the other games where Gravity spells reduce HP (i.e. FFVIII), Gravaja was not only AOE, but also much stronger than Gravity, which also gave away that it was a higher-tier version.

we have our final level spells, we will never recieve any tiers beyond those that currently exist because a lot fo the focus of the game development is on maintaining balance, Thundaja if it were tier 5 (which have been designed AS Thunder V and such but is only currently available to hnm ect) would unbalance the game

/recast "Thunder V"
/recast "Thundaga IV"

if you can't /recast it, it doesn't exist now and likely will never exist.
in relation to future games, we'll see when we get there, you'd be better off asking a gypsy to read the future than asking us, i doubt anyone here pretends to know which spells do and do not exist in FFXVII

There was (Moogle?) Cureja in FFX-2 if you were ever so lucky in obtaining Moogle Dress Sphere. Hmm? Maybe, maybe not...

well in the .dat there is tier V spells for blm *both Single and aga* ... they all look cool too

The tiers are there, they are only named differently.

Fire = Fire
Fira = Fire 2
Firaga = Fire 3
Firaja = Fire 4

In past FF's you could choose for your spells to be weaker, but attack all opponents, or stronger and attack a single target. All SE did was change some things around to make the AoE spells in ffxi excluded from the single target spells.

Yeah, SE just can't ever decide on which naming scheme they like. Personally, I like FFXI's; it makes sense. With FFXI, it's simply as follows:

No suffix: single-target
-ra : AoE, PT target (buffs/cures)
-ga: AoE, enemy target (nukes/enfeebles)

And then tiers have the numbers, which I always liked better than -ra and -ga anyway.

But anyway, I dunno about the -ja tier (aside from Gravija) being in other games... I know it's in FFXII though. In that game, the way it works is:

Aero = Aero 1
Aerora = Aero 2, but AoE
Aeroga = Aero III, also AoE
Aeroja = Aero IV, again AoE, also inflicts Confuse occasionally

The -ja tier each have their own status ailment associated with them, and aren't actually castable by your characters; only your espers get them.

Slight correction for the FFXI version:

Normal: single-target. Valid targets can vary and include friendly and/or enemy targets.
-ra: AoE centered around self. Can only target self.
-ga: AoE centered around the selected target. Valid targets can vary and include friendly and/or enemy targets.

By that logic, about the only thing left for -ja to do would be, like, something that hit *everything* in range, friend and foe alike. Like Crusader or Meltdown (aka Melton, Merton) from FF6. Would probably be centered on self as well.

In other FF games, as already mentioned, the suffix indicated the power of the spell (which FFXI already does with Roman numerals), and you either had no control over targeting, or you could choose whether you wanted single target or a weaker multi-target version.

If only you could choose between single or multiple targets for AM...

Aren't Iso, Vandy and Rufus all the same person?

what i want know is why in FFXII is aero a aoe spell will the others are not

I think -ja was used in FFI: Dawn of Souls with hte final Cure spell, Curaja.
Could've sworn I've seen them in other games as well.

Yeah, Curaja has been a spell in a couple FF games (I can think of FF1, 3, 4, 12) so far..

-ja is in Crystal Chronicles as well, only available in multiplayer mode with 4 players. Highest you can get a spell in single player is -ga, some spells aren't increasable at all in single player.

in FFX, -Ja spells were enemy only I belive
