Okay, I'm majorly confused on derailing. Are we allowed to do it or not? It was my impression that the flameboard just kinda had a "ignore derailers" policy or something since topics usually don't get locked or edited about derails, but then there's this topic here:

http://www.qcdn.org/ffxi/showthread.php?t=49148

This one got locked due to a derail. So mods, are you basically saying that derails are against the rules now? If so, are people going to start getting punished for doing it? Or was this topic an exception for some reason?

I don't think the mods have come to an unanimous decision on... well anything really.

Derailing is the lifeblood of QCDN.

It's a sorry state of affairs, but sadly it's fact.

I think there is a threshould and a severity to derails that must be crossed before action is necessitated. If that threshould his crossed, people should be warned, thread should be cleaned. Unfortunately, until people start crying about the derails or a mod use's their good sense to figure when enough derails have occurred to warrant action -- I say just let the sleeping dog lie.

Grem is right, derails occur at QCDN a lot, and not ALL of them are unpleasant. 1 well placed caturday picture brings humor to a real thread. 99 bandwagoners to ensue should know better. This would once again call on the users of QCDN to employ good sense.

Funny part is that my thread isn't even derailed. Romper was proving to the board that he was worthy of being on my idiot list, and Neo was trying to justyify it himself.

This is the 2nd time he's abused his modpowers, first was to put the warning on my acct. You could say banning me for a week old post is borderline, but I wont really count that.

Every forum will have its own tolerance level for derailments and its up the judgment of the moderator to determine if any thread has cross that threshold.

I know a number of mods are looking to quantify that in some way so there is a better understanding of where that threshold is. Hopefully guidelines will be available shortly.

The rule is if it gets too far off topic with 0 chance of drifting back in the right direction, they lock it.

Write it down, whatever, that's pretty much how it's always been at qcdn.

Will there be a cat limit to each thread? ( excluding avatars, sigs and quotes of previous cats)

Except for threads that Mods participate in, those are allowed to go on forever.

The final word is:

sup.

I doubt we can create a black-and-white rule for derails. As has been mentioned, some are just awesome. A lot are just banter between 1-3 people that could easily be done in PMs or in another thread. I think those are the ones we generally lock.

Admittedly I haven't read most of Meeze's thread. Got to page 6 or 7 then realized it's just Meeze and I didn't really need to put my brain cells at risk by reading it. But it's not like I really need them anyways so I'll be reading the rest of it when I get a chance.
