Tentatively titled Sonic Unleashed , this new game is planned to be released for Nintendo Wii, XBox360, and PS2 and 3.

SEGA seems to finally mean it this time when they talk about taking Sonic back to his roots. Taking a tip from the success of the Sonic Rush series on Nintendo DS, and the Sonic Rivals series on Sony PSP, combined with elements from the moderate success of Sonic And The Secret Rings, this new game will be in "Guided 3-D Mode" or as others may call it, "2 1/2-D, or 2.5-D Mode".

The game is completely rendered in 3-D like the 2006 Sonic The Hedgehog game, but moves on a 2-D plane for most of the game--occasionally shifting to a "behind the character" 3rd Person View of Sonic for forward-scrolling 3-D sequences.

The storyline has something to do with the continents of the Earth being separated, and Sonic having to get the chaos emeralds to reunite them again.

There's a new gimmick in this game as well. Apparently, Sonic's been inflicted with a case of Lycanthropy... In addition to the game's planned Day & Night Cycle, Sonic will have the ability to change into a Werewolf...

Finally, after almost 10 years of mostly crap, this might be a Sonic game that actually WON'T suck for a change.

Here's some trailers of what's to come in "Holiday 2008".

idk about the whole werewolf thing... But besides that...

I need a new pair of pants.

This thread has been in the Multi plat section for awhile.

WHY GOD WHY DO YOU HAVE THEM PUT THIS GIMMICK IN?!
I don't doubt that this game will be modestly good, but I imagine already it would've been so much better if this crap was left out.

Swear to god, these people are losing their minds.

How. Hard. Is. It.

Take out that Werewolf shit and this game will be perfect.

Damnit.

My last post is the true sonic game!

I guess it's not the gimmicks we're giving it's the crappy controls and bad camera angles. The game for the wii was the worse thing i could ever play. You could barely move let alone see what was happening ahead.

Sonic The Hedgehog was Meh because most of the controls felt very weak. I still play'd it but could have been much better. Even the place where you had to control sonic at "super speed" pissed me off because the controls for that was compete garbage..

Oh my god, i love sonic, but his games suck for mainly those two reasons. I'll go on and play this game, i can only pray they did a better job.

For some reason, developers seem to think 2D games are simply out of style. It boggles my mind to think of why, though. A revamped 2D game would be amazing. Playing Metroid with the prime graphics, but in 2D imo would be awesome. Super Paper Mario (although it had 3D elements) was a very enjoyable experience. New Super Mario world was wonderful. Viewtiful Joe (I havent played second one) was a also fairly fun to play. Contra (not that 3D BS) was (and with the new DS release, still is) awesome.

Anyone have any idea why developers seem to shy away from making pure 2D games? Because I dont.

One reason is because Sony's American division has actually enforced a law in which because they want to show off the "power" of the PS2 and PS3, they reject any developer who manufactures a 2-D game for their consoles, save for Fighting Games like Guilty Gear or Street Fighter.

This is why NAMCO RPGs like Namco X Capcom and Tales of Destiny 2 and the remake of the first Tales of Destiny never came Stateside, because Sony of Japan doesn't have such a rule. They're more open with the gaming industry. Heck, they allow pr0n DVDs to be marketed for PS2.

Nintendo and Capcom however love reinventing the 2-D Concept and not straying too far from their roots. Case in point, here's other games by the two companies featuring "2.5-D Mode":

Nintendo:

Super Paper Mario (Wii)
New Super Mario Bros. (DS)
Kirby: The Crystal Shards (N64, & Wii's Virtual Console)
Certain Morph Ball and Screw Attack sequences in the "Metroid Prime" series. (GC, Wii)

Capcom:

MegaMan Network Transmission (GC)
MegaMan Powered-Up! (Sony PSP)
MegaMan X7 (PS2)
MegaMan X8 (PS2)
MegaMan X: Maverick Hunter (Sony PSP)
Viewtiful Joe (GC)
Viewtiful Joe 2 (GC)
Viewtiful Joe: Red Hot Rumble (GC, & Sony PSP)
Viewtiful Joe: Double Trouble (DS)
Ghosts 'n' Goblins (Sony PSP)
Street Fighter 4 (Arcade, PS3)

... Of course, Square-Enix explored 2.5-D as well with the PS1 shoot-'em-up "R-Type" clone "Einhander". NAMCO did it with the "Klonoa" franchise. And of course, SEGA's done it with a few Sonic games and the 'NiGHTS' games. But they haven't really had the balls to stick with it like they should.

Somehow I feel like this'll half-suck.

I think it looks fine, but it's a little TOO fast for my taste. I don't get why they don't understand yet. People liked the way SA2 played. Just do it again.. the FF series does it, Zelda does it, Mario does it, there are only minute adjustments, and that's all it really needs.

I don't like the idea that normal form sonic never stops moving (as far as I can tell) but the werewolf gameplay looks pretty cool to me

The only thing I really like is the cityscapes.

My friend is wondering what the hell happened to the A-LIFE system that was popular in Sonic's Dreamcast / Gamecube / GBA era?

Rasing Chao was fun.

After seeing some of the gameplay for Were-Sonic, My hopes for this game increased. However I hope to god that Sega does not use the 4kids actors for this game >_>

One thing that made the last game EVEN WORSE was the crumby half arsed "Acting" from the 4kids Sonic actors.
