Finally...

Elemmire... you're favorite games are RPGs so you have no place to say which game is the best FPS ever. I've played everything from Rainbow Six (the original) and its follow ups, to socom, to americas army, to unreal tournament, to gears of war, to the battlefield games and all the call of dutys. And i'd have to agree with strid that this is probably the best i've ever played of any FPS if not shooter game ever. The single player could have been longer, but the online is amazing. The customization is awesome and to me all the guns shoot and feel exactly like they should. I don't find myself ever saying "now thats just bs my cross hairs were right on his head but the bullet missed by 100 feet." If i miss its because i wasn't aiming well, not because the game sucks. The sniping feels great too.

that's where you're wrong, I most enjoy FPS too, however, if you're claiming any of the FPS these days are the best, you're HORRIBLY wrong (imo that is). Every FPS I've played recently has yet to have really any innovation in gameplay or story. I would say my favorite FPS are Deus Ex, C&C Renegade, and Counter Strike. But, that's me, and they each brought something new when they came out and still the best of their kind, I say. (well, Deus Ex and System Shock are alike and made by the same people, but still, I'd say Deus Ex is better). The FPS in the last year have been.. mediocre to good. Some just god craptastic.

By the way, I too have played all UT's, Call of Duties, Battlefields (1942 is still my favorite), Halos, CSs, and Tom Clancy games (Rainbow Six, Ghost Recon, etc). I enjoy them, but I still say my top 3 are what I said above. TBH, I'm not sure which FPS he's talking about as the "Greatest" but I don't consider ANY of the FPS released in awhile on the "greatest" spot (as in #1, nothing above it, etc). Everything, and I mean everything, Resistance, Bioshock, Halo 3, Ghost Recon, Warhawk, etc, have been FUN but not "greatest" FPS material :P

I dunno, I don't think you've played CoD4. Not even a little.

A little, yes, and I think it's an amazing game, true, but still not set on "best FPS ever" :P at least yet.

What exactly is innovation in the FPS world? The last innovative thing was done 10+ years ago, with dualwielding in Marathon. Does that make Marathon the best FPS ever since it introduced something new?

You have a horribly skewed view as to what "best material" is. You can't always have an innovative game, and it can't be "imo", which is what all of your arguments are. CoD4 is without a doubt the best FPS that has been released in many years. Its innovative in its single player and beats the crap out of any games released since maybe Halo:CE and maybe CS.

In all fairness, there are 2 FPS left this season, and they are both from developers who absolutely own.

Unreal Tournament - Epic - of Unreal Tournament and Gears of War fame.
Haze - Free Radical - on Goldeneye and Time Splitters fame.

At the moment, for this generation, of FIRST PERSON SHOOTERS(hence, this doesn't include Uncharted), Call of Duty 4 is number one by a good margin, with Resistance and Halo behind it, and they're pretty damn close in vying for second.

But let's not make any rash judgements til this season is over. I have a feeling that Haze and UT3 easily knock Halo and Resistance into fighting for 4th and make a run at COD4. I'm gonna guess tho it'll be close between UT3 and COD4 and Haze in 3rd. We'll see though. This is all just based on previous unreal tournaments and previous free radical games, trying to estimate how that'd translate to this generation based on how other series seemed to get a lot better.

I'm not just saying innovation is what makes a FPS greatest game ever, but also a great storyline (as in single player), replayability (imo), and (usually) good online play. Deus Ex (with the patch) had all these, C&C Renegade had all these (and that actually was innovative too, as far as I can remember, I don't remember a game like it before it where it was both RTS/FPS), and CS (and CS:S, including Half Life) had both. Every game lately has been good in one way or another but not good enough in my opinion to be put on the "best game" pedestal :P I do need to play more of Call of Duty 4, this is true. I've only played a bit at my friend's house. So I don't fully judge this game yet.

Its pretty lame, since i don't have a PS3 yet, that the last two FPS left this season are on the PS3. Probably some of the best FPS of all time and i only get to play one of them. Really glad the holidays are comming up. I don't have to shell out the money myself to get it.

And i'm just saying why innovation can pretty much be thrown out the window, because the last innovative thing that happened in the realm of FPS happened 10 years ago.

Similar thing with Deus Ex and C&C. Just because you can put it into first view and shoot things, doesn't make it a first person shooter. I could shoot things in first person view in oblivion, but putting it next to halo and CoD would be just silly.

I'd also like to say that despite what you seem to think, you already passed out a pretty heavy judgement on CoD4, despite it actaully being probably the best thing since goldeneye/PD1.

Remember that whole thing I said about everything being in "imo" terms. Yeah...it still applies. Especially with something like this.

Innovation is good if it's for the sake of making the game more fun, not for the sake of being innovative. Case and point, Lair isn't more fun cause of the six-axis controls, even though it's very innovative.

Don't bring up Lair pre-patch ever again... lol

why are you so determined to not consider Deus Ex and C&C:Renegade FPS? THEY ARE FPS. FIRST PERSON SHOOTER. You are initially in First Person view in C&C Renegade and that's all you have for Deus Ex, and the gameplay, surprise surprise, is gathering various guns and, surprise, SHOOTING PEOPLE with them. Everywhere else I've looked puts them under the FPS genre. >.> and tell me a game that was like C&C Renegade BEFORE it. FPS with RTS elements, cause I can't think of any.

I didn't say there was another game like C&C. I just said its not a true FPS that should even be handeled with other true FPS. Did you read my example? Oblivion is in first person, and you can go around and collect bows to shoot people with. So its an FPS with RPG elements? No, because thats silly.

Also, it didn't transfer well (its the internet, what can you do), but i was mostly yanking your chain about Deus Ex. I still, however, think its for noobs.

Meh, people grade how good a FPS is by the multiplayer now. Halo without multiplayer would die soon and same with COD4 and of course UT3. In terms of single player. Half-life>all.

and why is Deus Ex for noobs? cause it has an original story (specially for its time), more interesting game play than Lawlo 3? I think what Anglis said is true.. too many judge FPS by Multiplayer alone these days and that's, well, gay.

People judge FPS based on multiplayer, because that is why people buy them. An FPS with great multiplayer is what makes it a great game. If it has a good single player, thats good too, but devs aren't going out of their way to make the very small % that don't play the multiplayer happy.

Deus Ex is for noobs, because the game is just in general not good. Its story sucked and its gameplay was nothing good either. I rented it once and returned it after a few days because i couldn't bare the torture anymore.

I actually gave the game a chance before i passed a judgement on it, kinda like how you didn't do for CoD4.

FPS are judged by multiplayer because they should be. Most FPS games have the same shoot to kill, kill to beat gamestyle so it needs more. Dues Ex isn't this kind of game. It's an RPG. There is more to it than -just- shooting and killing. Without multiplayer, FPS games would be rentals, at best. Halo 3, you can beat in 3-4 hours same with CoD4, F.E.A.R., and hell most every FPS I've ever played, Half-Life 2 aside. They are short because the people who make them know what their game survives on. They could either spend more time on a story, which in due time regardless of how badass it is, will fizzle because of their repetitiveness, or they could make a better multiplayer.

For the Dues Ex is for noobs comment... You shouldn't say things like that. In its day, and still to this day, it's an awesome game. It was like the Bioshock of its time except better, imo. The multiplayer, it's junk, compared, but single player is full of win and awesome. If it where in the same genre, it could have been better than Goldeneye but it's an RPG for us sane people. Despite how great I think the game is, I'll admit it's a hit-or-miss title, much like the System Shock games.

lol, look above dumbass, I said I didn't fully judge it. What I've played so far, it is fun, I admit that, but IT IS NOT "GREATEST GAME EVER" GOOD!

And I dunno, I refuse to judge a FPS on Multiplayer so much cause I find Multiplayer gets more repetitive than single player.

Look above dumbass, i already said that, that was how you made it seem.

If you refuse to rate a game on the same standards as about 99% of the community, then be prepared to be called out on your different standards, and be prepared to defend them. Especially when it is one of the most important aspect of the game genre.

And in this thread, typing in caps makes you right.

On a more serious note, sure deus ex is "technically" and FPS, but in reality its not. I wouldn't even consider it an FPS/RPG but more emphesis on RPG/fps. Online is what FPS's are judged on because of the reasons make and strid said, as well as the fact that you get so much more gameplay and variety out of multiplayer, hence why games like the battlefields and unreal games can survive on multiplayer alone.

And i agree and disagree with you ele, CoD4 is not the best FPS as far as single player goes, but it sure as shit is the best online FPS as far as gameplay and customization. All the different game types and weapon/map balances are great. And like i said before I've played a SHIT ton of fps/tps games online so i'm not talking out of my ass. The single player is right up there for the best too, only beat out by maybe Bioshock and Half Life due to the fact they mostly revolve around single player alone (atleast bioshock). And yeah, HL2: DM sucks my balls, hard.

I was about to say Bioshock isn't that great, but I'll change it up a bit. It's not universal. Myself,I lost interest and didn't even finish. COD4 I've beaten twice. Resistance like 4 times. Goldeneye like 10 times. Timesplitters 2 and 3 both multple times. Didn't finish the Darkness, FEAR or GRAW 2 either. Sometimes well made shooters are just boring because they focused on other things over great gameplay. If you're atotal shooter junky, Bioshock may be awesome because it's something fresh, but if you're happy with refinement of the classic formula then not worth the price paid.
