So I did some tests last night. I popped 9 coffers (for money). I went 3/9 on actually getting something from the coffers. The other 6 times I would get a message "The chest was just an illusion." and it would disappear. However you still retain your key.

The Coffer pop time seems to be 3-10 minutes.(maybe less)

not bad least don't have worry about gil seller in castle z anymore.

What was the interval between you successfully popping chests? I opened 2 in Sky last night but that was with about 90 minutes in between.

The respawn time for Treasure Coffers and Treasure Chests has been shortened, and the chances of obtaining artifacts, maps, and key items from them have been increased. Furthermore, after obtaining items or gil from a coffer or chest, players will temporarily become unable to receive items or gil from other coffers or chests.

I was always under the impression if you had AF quest open or didn't have the map for a given area, it was guaranteed to be in the chest? Probably a mistranslation.

I assume the reason you retained the key and the chest went away was because you were temporarily unable to recieve items from the chest.

I think in this context, "artifacts" means items (like Scrolls, weapons, Electrum Rings, etc).

My popping was like this:

1. Illusion
2. Money
3. Illusion
4. Illusion
5. Illusion
6. Money
7. Illusion
8. Illusion
9. Money

And for the record, I did this with 2 characters. I do not think its an issue where you pop one and have a certain span of time that you cant open. I thought it was interesting that I got an illusion my first pop. I simpy think its around a 30% open rate if you are popping for profit. But as I will end up doing this again to see if that ends up to still be the case.

I re-read it twice and came to the conclusion that what you find in the coffers/chest stays the same, but because of the increase rate of the coffers/chests appearing, with the added effect of people who are unable to open multiple coffers in a given time, then due to this you theoretically increase your chances of obtaining whatever item you're after because other people cannot stop you from opening a coffer. As a result, even if someone does open a coffer before you, i.e. a THF, a coffer/chest will reappear very soon, and thus, this increases your chance of obtaining the item you're after.

So in a way it seems to be a mistranslation but in another way they didn't explain it very well.

Does anyone know how this actually works yet? I was in Horutoto last night trying to get the moth axe. First chest, got some gil. Then I get 20 illusions in a row over the course of eight hours... included zoning in and out, logging off / back on, tossing second key to get a third. Really frustrating. And clues as to what I might be doing wrong?

Seems to be random. I used to grab the chest in a zone during my farming runs and that update ruined it. Even if its your first chest of the day its possible it will be an illusion.

Even if you farm a new key for an hour and find a chest, it can be an illusion.

It sucks. As far as I can tell, its completely random.

This is completely theoretical, but... I believe that a coffer/chest has a qualifier that checks to see if you are on a quest/mission that requires the said coffer/chest in that area.
If it does, you get whatever item you need for the quest/mission.
If not, two things may occur:
- If the chest has been opened within an hour after a real one is opened and treasure is obtained that is NOT quest/mission related, it is an illusion.
- If a real chest has not been opened after an hour of non-quest/mission items being obtained by anyone, then it is real.
Of course, this is speculation based on what people have said in the Wiki and also what I have perceived. ^^
So, basically.. if someone opened the chest for farming purposes by anyone (the timer is not individualized, or per-character), a real one will not spawn until after an hour has passed. Essentially, they changed the spawning time of a real chest (for gil attaining) to one hour instead of thirty minutes. The low, in-general respawn time was to aid those people who are on quests/missions.

So if _anyone_ has recently opened a chest for non-gil, I cannot open it? And on top of that I have no way of knowing, because the illusion chest keeps spawning? So then how is it supposed to work? You keep a key in your inventory forever and just check a chest when you're passing thru on the off chance that nobody has opened it in the past hour? That has to be the stupidest fucking thing I've heard of. SE really boned it with this. Now nobody will ever use the chests for anything other than quest items.

More like, I believe that non-gil, quest/mission openings do not count towards the for-gil openings. I say this because I've farmed chests in Upper Delkfutt's before.. and during the time between real chest spawns, I helped someone get their BST key item. But I was still able to nab a real chest after an hour had gone by, after which I had opened it before-hand.

I don't know, I've farmed chests before too and never had anything related to an hour stop me. I really think its, like most other things in this game, a Random Number Generator that determines if you get an item or not.

Trust me, I've completely dominated a zone in the middle of the night and with no competition had chests pop as an illusion, become a real one ten minutes later then remain a real one twenty minutes later. In before "Well they're on a 30 minute timer."

RNGs operate the majority of determining what an item is in this game, droprates and spawn rates and everything else lottery-wise is, well, a lottery. My money's on bad luck. Yeah, it sucks if you were trying to scoot around an AH price for an easily-obtained treasure chest, but since there's no way to guarantee what you're going to get, its probably more realistic to just give in and buy it.

In the time it would take to gather the key, chest and real item you could probably farm enough gil to just buy the thing.

I personally think its kind of like it was before on when you could pop a chest for gil. Coffers used to spawn every 15-60 minutes. In my experience (popping well over 100 coffers for gil after update) its a random time with at least 15 minutes but not over 60, which to me, seems to fit the old spawn rules.

Side note. I personally love this addition. I just happen across keys when I am doing my regular farming. And to me, the rate I actually pop chests has not changed at all. But because of this addition, people seem to not come and farm as much, which gives me less competition. Pretty nice making 6-18k extra just by farming in the area every 40ish minutes. (average)

They why did I get stuck with illusions for eight hours?

Somone else must have been beating you to the punch. Never in my hours upon hours of farming have I ever had to wait longer then an hour.
