Ok... i have used firefox for a long time and something happened when i was playing earlier tonight.... I had an internet window open on qcdn like i do alot of times while i was tabbed into FFXI. When i finished ffxi i went to click on a thread on here and it crashed with a message i have never seen before.

firefox.jpg

So i submitted a report and started to search for answers on the internet.

After the initial crash when i was on qcdn i was unable to reopen it and continued to get the same message. I did what i always do in these types of situations.. i deleted firefox and downloaded a fresh copy assuming that it was corrupt. This did not work and so i started down the troubleshooting list using this page.

http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Firefox+crashes+when+you+open+it

Now it wouldnt open even in safe mode, i dont have google desktop, a tablet pc, or spector pro, so i was onto the Backdoor.Ulrbot.C step.

I was able to get the following information

http://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/05eeb03b-cb28-4b8f-8a7d-37c1b2090129?p=1

If anyone can make better information out of this report go for it but according to their steps it rules out the ulrbot because all of my modules have version numbers.

The next step is malware which i bet that it is but i am slightly annoyed about that possibility seeing as i have not been on any site other than qcdn today and i would like to think that it wasnt just hibernating on my computer. Tomorrow i am going to go indepth and really see if i can find a virus or something that is causing this but if anyone knows shit about this and or thinks they can help i would definately appreciate it. All of my initial virus scans are coming back negative though which is leaving me extremely confused.

Also it could be a problem with qcdn alone but i have qcdn set as my homepage so if anyone could tell me how to change my homepage in firefox without actually opening it that would be helpful but i may have actually done this accidentally when i reinstalled firefox because i think it would default to its usual homepage not the one i changed it to.

Your firefox profile may be corrupt.

You can start the profile manager by opening a command prompt, changing the working path to c:\program files\mozilla firefox (or wherever it's installed), and typing

Code:
firefox -profilemanager

this will allow you to create a fresh profile, with a new homepage (note that your old profile will still exist, but your new one will not have any of your favorites). If the new profile works and the old one doesn't, something's corrupted in your old FF profile.

figured it out but still not helping it still crashes before it allows me to chose a profile now that i have 2

oh shit .. i did it a second time.. just to make sure and it worked... i am gonna have to ask stine to treat you extra special tonight. thank you sooo much.

If i may ask though what would ever cause this particular corruption to occur?

lol, my best answer would be "/shrug" - i couldn't begin to tell you what'd corrupt a firefox profile. i had it happen once, and it really pissed me off.

i export backups of my favorites about twice a month now, just in case :D

i also run dual profiles on my laptop - one for home, one for work.

Lately Firefox has been crashing for me too, but since I'm impatient, I just said f it, and started using Chrome.

Without turning this into an X vs. X browser war, I use Chrome at home (lol poetry) about 50%, and I'd use it more if it were more open and had plugin support.

Opera FTW... wait what?

And I had mad issues with firefox 3 crashes. I think they were related to flash and even with reinstalling pretty much everything (firefox, flash, plugins) the problem didn't go away until i finally reformatted. Now everything is fine though.
