Latest PLAYSTATION 3 Firmware Update Provides PlayStation, PlayStation 2 and DVD Upscaling, Remote Play on PSP (PlayStation Portable) via the Internet and DLNA transfer of media content also enabled.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) announced today availability of the latest version of the PLAYSTATION 3 (PS3) firmware. Version 1.80 features upscaling of PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games, and DVD movies up to full 1080p HD resolution when viewed on a compatible HD TV set.

The capability to upscale DVDs to HD quality is a feature normally only associated with top range DVD players, and its inclusion in the latest firmware upgrade now allows PS3 owners with an existing DVD collection to dramatically enhance the viewing pleasure of their DVD collection when viewed through a compatible HD TV set. Not only can DVD movies be enhanced to full 1080p HD quality but so too will PlayStation 2 and PlayStation games be upscaled to provide much improved gaming pleasure.

In a comprehensive update to PS3’s already impressive capabilities, Version 1.80 also allows users to enjoy Remote Play on their PSP across the internet, allowing them to access their PS3 anywhere in the world where a broadband internet connection is available2.

Version 1.80 also allows users on a home network to seamlessly view and play rich media content such as images, music and video on their PS3, that is stored on their DLNA3 enabled devices such as PCs and laptops elsewhere in the house, reinforcing PS3’s credentials as a home entertainment hub that truly deserves pride of place in the Living Room.

A host of other enhancements include the ability to print photo images stored on PS3’s hard disk or inserted storage media to a selection of Epson printers.

PS3 owners will be able to upgrade their PS3 with the latest Version 1.80 firmware from 24th May 2007.

1. DVD-ROM (including DVD Video content) can only be upscaled with HDMI compatible TV sets.

2. Use of Remote Play requires a powered up PS3 with Version 1.80 as well as PSP firmware version 3.50 which will be available at the end of May.

3. DLNA – Digital Living Network Alliance. For more info on DLNA, please see http://www.dlna.org/en/consumer/home

hehe, I still don't get why couldn't have custom backgrounds from the start but it's really a minor unimportant thing :P (that seems to be mostly Baja's argument when it comes to Sony mistakes and I do agree with that.. there shoulda been rumble support if you hook up your PS2 controller from the start but, to me, still a very minor point XD)

Edit: Well, my background seems to be 2.0 update coming... or something.. I'm not entirely sure :|

Nothing to insult them over, they didn't have to fix a stupid decision this time. Try to not be so butt hurt about it.

DVD upscaling, while it doesn't interest me, is a nice feature for those few who have HDtv's.

It upscales.

And I'm not really a video expert but according to avsforum the ps3 upscaler is as good as any out there on the market, including all the really expensive ones out there.

weee finally got the update :P and I checked around and they had a nice trailer for that new Naughty Dog game.. Drake's Fortune was it? looks interesting :D

Wow, I was playing Castelvania: Symphony of the Night flawlessly the other day and I decided to play it again after updating and not only does the opening video lag (which is weird in itself) but the music is somewhat choppy (it's damn near impossible to notice unless you're just able to notice needlessly minor details like myself). Oh well, hopefully with enough tweaking with the new available settings it could get back up and running just fine. Aside from that this update was pretty damn nice, especially for the PS2 library.

EDIT: This is not my image, but I found this elsewhere. It is Tekken 2 for the PSOne being compared pre-update, with scaling, and then with smoothing added to scaling. It's a dramatic change. Is it just me or does the ground look messed up in the second two? Who cares, the fighers look amazing...

Most of the pics floating around are off cameras without the resolution to really show the improvement. I can tell a difference in the actual games but not in most of the pics shown except for the really dramatic improvements like FF12 and RE4 for example.

I see nothing different on any of my dvds or ps2 games honestly. Oh well.

Only applies to the HDMI output. If you have Component output or lower, it doesn't upscale.

I am on a 65" 1080p HD tv. And HDMI is my input. Maybe I am just expecting too much? Or need to just pay closer attention to it?

Well some of the nicer TVs upscale everything automatically. If that's the case you won't notice a difference cause your TV did it already.

If that's the case, your TV is probably good enough to make use of some of those new video features. Most importantly is the RGB full range and super white. Throw those on and see if your blu-rays/ps3 games look nicer.

try this test out: http://www.gameswank.com/content/view/126/1/

Thank you fire^^ You have satisfied me again. So for me this upgrade did squat. For those that it helped i am sure they appreciate it, in any case its a cool move by Sony.

Test out the RGB full range and super white for your TV before you are so sure this didn't benefit you at all. They're not on by default so flip them on and see if you notice any improvement.(this will help for video that's already HD, not for making SD look better)

This update will be so much better once PSP 3.5 is out that i can actualy use the new connectivity things.
