I saw this on Playonline, finally they actaully got a real one! :

The Fish Ranking System

"A new competition for fishermen (and fisherwomen) is set to arrive on Vana'diel with the next version update!

We have received several requests for a fish ranking system and have debated the issue for a considerable amount of time. After seeing the positive results of the Ballista Ranking system, we decided to make Fish Ranking a reality!

Many players have already held their own private fishing contests, but now everyone will have the opportunity to participate in a larger, official ranking event!

-After the version update, Fish Ranking will be available at the Fishermen's Guild in Selbina. After specifying the variety of fish to be used in the competition, the rules will be contested.

-Contest rules are changed periodically by the Fishermen's Guild. Winners may be chosen based on the weight or the size of their fish. The heaviest, largest fish does not always win, however. There is also a ranking to see who can catch the lightest fish, and another to see who can catch the smallest. Depending on the rules, participants may seek a large, heavy fish, or a small, light fish.

-After submission, each fish will be evaluated regardless of the method in which it was acquired. If you could not catch the fish required for the contest, you may want to try working with your linkshell members or other adventurers, or even buy the fish at the auction house. Contest winners will receive a new title and a modest award.

We hope you enjoy this new, competitive angle to fishing in Vana'diel! Be sure to check the FINAL FANTASY XI main page again after the version update for further details! "

they allow you to buy the fish... so that means. you dont really have to even be a fisher?

i wonder what the prize would be.

Being able to buy the fish for the contest? That sounds intensely stupid to me. Kudos to them for coming up with a new activity for us anglers, but c'mon... make it real. Any schmuck with gil can buy emperor fish or ryugu titans.

Well since any schmuck can buy them, that means legit fishermen can sell them for significantly higher gilzors than before if ppl are dumb enough to buy them for a "modest reward" (and they probably will be).

Anything that expands the fish market is normally fine with me, but this irks me. Next thing you know baseball players will be using steroids to artificially enhance their performance.

Being able to buy the fish completely negates the purpose of a contest for fishing.

Oh noes! Don't say such things! Those little saints wouldn't even know where to get ahold of such things... ha!

I agree that it's stupid to be able to buy the fish for it. But then again I've always thought that it was stupid that you could buy items to advance your rank while crafting in the first place. But unless they decide to change that, I don't see why you should be expected to have to fish up your own fish for this.

Of course, this is probably a moot point as I highly doubt non-fishermen are going to do this unless the reward is better than they make it sound like it will be. All I want is the title. :)

Actually, the whole idea of buying fish brought something else to mind for me:

Can you buy the items for tradeskills tests?

I've always been under the impression that you couldn't. If that is in fact the case, then they could always place the same set of rules on any fishing competition. If that's not the case, then it prolly should be :P

Unless this drops 100coins/Ancient Beastcoins/some amazing gear, I'm not interested.
