Heya. I'm currently going into fishing. I know that I should fish up moat carps till about level 12. But where do I go after that? Any suggestions would be nice ^^

Yes, carps are your friends.

Are you intending to go to 100 fishing? Or just past 50 in general? If so you will NEED, Lu shangs. If you intend to get lu shangs, turn in EVERY moat carp you catch. I just recently caught my 10,000th moat carp, and I know that if I had turned in every one I'd have lu shangs by now. Instead I'm like 3K/10K >.<

Heres my suggested path. From 1 to like 50 all you really need is a hume rod. It's extra strong vs any carp type fish, and you'll wnat insect paste, they love it.

From 1-12, go to Knightwell in West Ronfaure. about 9/10 fish you catch will be moat carp with this set up.

From 13-27 fish in port sandy going after tricolored carp, and moat carp at the same time, right next to the two brothers for lu shangs. So you can just trade in your stacks as you go without having to run far.

By then you should've fished up the vast majority of your moat carps for lu shangs. From here on there are several paths. Most people go after bluetails/noble ladies/cone calamary on the ferry using a halcyon rod and a minnow. They sell good on AH

Once you hit roughly 40~ish, It's time to go back to catching carps. This time in Al Zhabi!

You'll catch tonnes of carps again, and your targeted fish for skilling up is the Sazanbaligi, (the ToAU version of gold carp)

The only reason I'm recommending this place over windy is you can get there easier if your home town is bastok or sandy. If your in windurst, the same set up works well in windurst woods by the dhalmel farm.

Goldcarp/Sazanbaligi should last you til 55ish. By then you should have lu shangs.

Just a little helpful pointer so you do go absolutely insane having to read "You catch a moat carp" 10,000 times: Add some variety to your fishing strategies. Skill up some crafts that require fish as an ingredient which mostly includes cooking and alchemy. If your end goal is an ebisu, then get your lu shang asap, and just skill fish forever until you hit 100.

A few resources that will help every fisherman:
www.finalfishing.com - pretty hefty database of all the fish in ffxi, I'm pretty sure it's still being updated.
www.titanictus.com - fishing forum. The answer to every one of your questions will likely be answered here.

On a related note, I just finished off my fishing ring collection last week :).

I took a different path:
13-30ish Lake in Jugner Forest (Moats, Tricolored, Dark Bass, gold carp sometimes)
30ish-50 Rabao (Moats, Sandfish)

This took me to 49.x and 10,000 carp. Looking back I might have started in Rabao sooner, as the sandfish were pretty easy to catch.

Thanks for the helpful advice ^^

Currently using a halc rod and fishing in any city freshwater for carp. Been selling them atm XD

Another question, at what level can I start catching nebimonites?

well

the thing about fishing is you can catch practically any ! fish at any level. So 1

but you need to be roughly <15 levels below it to get decent skill ups from it.

!!! fish on the other hand, you'll often get the "you're lost your catch due to lack of skill" message unless you're like 5 levels above the fish <_<

So what level can you catch nebs? lv 1

I suggest halc rod + shrimp lure as long as you avoid the !!! fish, they'll most likely snap your line

That's the best guide I've seen or found yet. I hit 100 fishing last weekend and am currently working on the Ebisu quest. A few tips.
If you're going just for skill use 1-12 on moat carp and then go straight to nebimonites 12-27. Sell all the fish and buy a lu shangs. I see you're in Insurrection and I know you guys do all endgame so I assume you know how to make gil for yourself through NMs/Farming/Crafting. For me it was easier to go ahead and pay the huge chunk of change to get a lu shangs and continue to skill up. The thing about the rod is it will pay itself back in time and you never have to lower you skill-up rate targeting multiple fish (the guide has a way to skill-up and still catch moats). If you don't want to buy the rod chances are you may burn out due to lack of skill-ups and how long the quest is.

I'm using fishing for profit more then skill really.

for profit is easily:
1-12 Moat Carp (Halycon + Insect Paste @ Knightwell in West Ronfaure)
12-27 Nebimonites (Halycon + Shrimp Lure @ Sea Serpent Grodo)
27-53 Shall Shells (Halycon + Sibiki Rig @ Bubirimu Cliffs)

If you don't care about skills you could probably make more money on nebimonites than shall shells

I noticed yew rod or whatever rod that NPC in south sandy sells(also sells little worms) is the best for moats at knightswell. Only problem is that it can break on arrowwood, but that rarely bites. Best to get a couple of those rods, you can really see the difference between a yew vs another rod. Don't take my word for it, try it.

Alright. Thanks for the suggestions. I'll get to work. :)

Everything breaks on arrowwod pretty much lol.

Hume rod drops all carp type fish hp twice as fast. Thats why I recommend it.

And who the hell skills on shall shells at 27? O.o Those things are hard enough to hook with GP body and mogenhancment fishing and lu shangs, let alone none of the above at lv 27 o.O

This, and you don't need Lu shang for that. save all the money you make with those fishes and buy moat carp with it. You can catch nebimonites from level 0 up to cap, I'm pretty sure, although its prolly easier to catch maot carps and sardines.

53-63: Trumpet shells ( sell fast , stack, and sell high to NPC when crafted into rings).

63+: Need Lushang, can catch anything of gigant squids, black sole, grimmonites emperor fish etc.

I skilled 27-53 on shall shells just like that and it worked for me.

????

Comp rod + sinking minnow will hook the catfish 1/2 in port sandy, I remember those days.

Was skilling up at the same time with a friend and we had a contest to see who could get the biggest catfish.

you save em and wait until it was the fish for the tournament thing?
