My sister was using my comp and somehow froze it, shut it off (via power button) and somehow corrupted my hard drive. I couldn't actually boot windows, it'd get to the boot list of like Boot in Safe Mode, Last known good config., etc. and everything would freeze. I ran the repair module from the Win XP cd I have and I got XP up again, but it reverted back to SP1. My problem is, it won't install SP2. I've tried Windows Update but it can't load the actual updates, I've tried actually using a CD from work with the SP2 self-extracting cabinet files on it, but no go. Anyone have any ideas? Should I just back up important stuff and just format my hard drive and reinstall everything or is there a way out of this? Thanks in advance.

Erase your sister.

Your idea if you done it often may be the easier option just to go ahead and do if you're familiar with the concept.

your best option is probably a reformat

its usually quicker and easier to do that than actually fix problems in XP as long as you can backup your data.

yeah, just backup your drive and reformat, probably the easiest thing to do. Also, Windows repair is not necessarily the most reliable thing around. I wouldn't be surprise if your Windows would start acting up soon lol.

I tried to, but it failed. I don't really wanna have to back everything up but I've formated and resintalled windows on enough computers to know what I'm doing. Thanks guys, just didn't know if there was a way around it.

Try going to the Windows update site and see if you can manually download SP2 from there by searching for it, or force it to scan what updates you need. You might have to actually install it in safe mode.

I just ended up formatting my hard drive. I've installed SP2 and everythings working fine now.

My dad told me (after I formatted mind you) that I could've gone into the registry hive and force it to download and install SP2. Yeah...great...

Sometimes regedit can be a pain in the ass >< lol

It's very difficult to force a service pack to install if it is normally failing. You can always download the SP2 standalone package (usually called network install or something), and if that doesn't work, there are probably other issues as well.

You can download the default registry settings for XP SP1 and SP2 online if you search through google, and sometimes that will resolve the issue, but other than that, restore is the way to go. :)

Oh, and there's also a really nice utility called dial-a-fix that you can download online that does that, as well.

Yeah but my dad's an MCIE so shit like this is a cakewalk for him. Too bad he watched me format my hard drive and then told me "Oh you can force SP2 to install if you fuck around with the registry." Thanks dad...

I didn't know that, I'll look into that in case it happens again, thanks :)

If your father was really at that level, he could have told you, you can rip data off a disk even after you format it several times.

He did but since it's my computer he just left me alone to fix it how I did. Still wish he coulda just force installed it but w/e, comp works now and that was the point of me asking the original question in the first place.

Theres an MCIE too, Microsoft Certified Infrastructure Engineer.

Since my computer's been fixed this thread has served its purpose. Can a mod lock it please?

Yes there is. I don't have to validate anything to you. Can a mod please lock this? The thread has served its purpose.

There really isn't...

I don't think a thread should be locked because you don't agree with me on something. Just like every other thread on this forum, the topic may jump and other things can be discussed as they're derived through the postings from users.

Show me what a MCIE is. I'm interested.

Edit:

Actually here, I'll explain my side.

Microsoft was "banned' from using the term "engineer" in any of their certification programs post 2003 for international reasons.

The last engineering title one may receive from Microsoft is System Engineer year 2003. Then they migrated to the new generation certification paths, Technology Specialist (MCTS), IT Professional (MCITP), and Architect (MCA).

Pre-2003 year, there was no such thing as a Microsoft Certified Infrastructure Engineer.

So, please, validate your father's MCIE?

I want it locked because I asked about fixing windows xp. Thats the only thing I asked about, thats the only thing other users posted about. You derailed my thread by challenging me. I asked it to be locked because it's served its purpose of asking people their input on fixing my problem, I didn't post a thread about my fathers occupation. I want this thread locked. Third time I've asked for it.

Ok leave your father's "MCIE" occupation out of it.

I'm a Microsoft advisory board director, I'm just wondering what an MCIE is, since I think it's important for me to know if there's a fraudulent certification floating around.

And as for your father, if he has a fraudulent certification (maybe none of my business) wouldn't you want to let him know?

For the record, He is probably referring to an older certification (MCSE+I) that was retired in the past. And lets try not to flamebait the guy asking for assistance please.

Glad to hear if you got your problem fixed. If you would like the thread locked or feel like you are being harassed, please use the PM function to ask a mod for lock or the "report post" function if you feel something is in violation of the rules.

Thanks and have a good one,
Meth
