Flameboard

Annnd this isn't reason enough to put up a flameboard so these kind of posts won't get thrown in other areas? I've seen SO many topics just go to shit because someone's got a bug up there ass - if that were in a flameboard setting it'd be fine but in general discussion?? C'mon...

Um...most of the things I was talking about happen in NW or BC, where they belong. And when they go to shit, they are locked. Why waste bandwith on an ongoing e-peen battle? ;p

QFT! Before I "left" FFXI and was on here everyday, there were so many posts about the stupidest shit. Some people might say that having 2 places for posting stuff would waste space and bandwidth. Not true, when its spaced out. The FB back when we had it was absolutely flooded with "zomg j00r stupid!" and dumbfuck posts like that. I'm glad its gone. Saved alot of people some brain cells.

Maybe - but the flip side is now whenever someone's got a beef the thread gets locked. I dont know which is worse.. flipping through some ridiculously stupid posts in which case I stop reading the thread in a flameboard vs. straight up locking a thread the minute someone says "stfu noob" --> mod comes in "this is a flame" and locks it case in point tagrineth's last thread. At first it was a flame but by the 5th post it became a discussion does Blm/Brd work? Merits? Situational? etc. that didn't need to be locked... just one of a # of examples I could bring up where the moment someone has a beef the thread gets locked despite the merits of the thread and the direction the converstion is going.

I see one fair way to handle a change of this magnitude. Hold a poll. A large poll lasting several weeks, with an announcement email sent along with it. Allow for an "I don't care" option in case people who don't care actually want to vote for some reason (which there probably will be), but discard those votes.

In other words, do what Sculli should have done in the first place before even making this godawful change.

Just allow the mods flexibility in how they handle unsuitable posts. That seems most reasonable. IE: if a thread is mostly good except for one or two posts/people, just deal with them personally rather than kill the thread. I don't miss the flameboard. I wouldn't mind seeing it back either. I'm indifferent. The only part of the loss of the flameboard I dislike is that it puts the mods in a tough situation. Frankly, they can't win. You can find side by side threads condemning the mods for taking action and for not taking action. I think the flameboard was a catch-all fix-it for any problem thread. It takes all the stress off the staff anyway. You can move any problem thread to the flameboard and let people continue if they please or not read it if so inclined.

A sensible solution letting the majority of users decide what they want? That's crazy talk.

I'm sorry, you must have this place confused with somewhere the admins take the time to find out what the users really want before making major changes.

Anyone notice that the largest proponents of the anti-flameboard cause are those who'd be flamed for being stupid?
