So I have had this foot pain for a while now. It is a very localized spot on the top and bottom of my foot about 2-3 inches from my pinky toe. It has lasted almost a year now. The worst part is I have been to several doctors and none of them can tell me anything that is wrong. I have had X-rays. blood work, needles stuck up and into the bone, everything and they still have no explanation. To me it feels just like the time I had a hairline fracture, but Xrays show nothing.

The times it hurts the most is after I take my shoes off after work or whatever I was doing that day.

Anyone ever else have a pain unexplained by medicine? This is really starting to piss me off and affecting my every day life as there have been points in time where I can't even put pressure on it.

Some hairline fractures won't show up on x-rays at all, only on MRI's. If you're having pain your doctor shouldn't stop looking into it until he can give you an underlying cause, even if the answer is "Yeah, it's X and we can't do anything about it".

I just consulted our in-house doctor and he says stress fractures of the 5th metatarsal are very common, and he's had a number of patients with the same complaint as you. They'd been in pain for a year or more, nothing had ever shown up on x-rays, but a MRI showed the fracture plain as day. So get yourself to a good podiatrist, and put your foot down (ha! pun) about getting a MRI done.

MRI, haven't had one of those. I hate lazy doctors that just seem to say "Walk it off, buy new shoes" or some lame excuse like that. Thanks for the advice. Now I have something to say to those dudes other than "My foot really hurts" lol

I've had a numbness on the bottoms of my toes for several years, but it was never bad enough to see a doctor about. This summer I started having a pain in the bottom of my foot, about an inch below the toe next to my big toe. It's a constant dull pain that comes and goes. I thought a week off work relaxing would fix it, but about 6 days into my vacation it was worse than ever so I saw a doctor about it. She tried squeezing my foot in several places around the pain and it never became a sharp pain.

She said that the cause was likely my high arches, and suggested support insoles (not just padded ones, but the kind with the plastic support for the arch) which are helping a little.

She prescribed a Non-Steroid Anti-Inflammatory Drug (NSAID) for 10 days. By day 3 the pain was completely gone. Then on day 7 the side effects started. I spent half the night at work in the bathroom, half the time sitting down only to fart, with a constant sharp pain in my side. After about a week the pain was back, I'm going to a podiatrist on Thursday.

I have tried every possible shoe insert for my feet from arch support to heel support to full foot support lol Didn't do anything. I made an appointment today with a new podiatrist for next week. I have heard some good things about him, but every doctor has at least one good patient lol

Been down this same road with feet, leg, and lower back pain. Mainly feet pain especially after work(on concrete floors 9 hours a day).

I also went to a couple regular physicians where I got that same, "buy new shoes", "try doing <insert excercise>", etc.

Finally decided to go to a recommended podiatrist. Now for me, it was an arch support issue. After xrays I was found to only have a 13 degree support in my arch where the 'normal' arch is 25 degrees.

The fix is to have specific inserts that were casted from my feet to wear at all times. Doc tells me these will last 10-12 years and have a good warranty. Only bad thing is even with Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance they won't cover them. I'm going to try dealing w/them myself after I get the final paperwork. Total cost is $250.00

Yeah, most insurance companies won't cover prescription orthotics, which is stupid. It's $250 for an orthotic that can correct or at least reduce the problem, and they won't cover it, but they'll cover the $25,000 for a surgery to correct what problems develop after going without orthotics.

I sometimes get weird foot pains right in the middle of my foot after walking around for to long. I know it isn't from the walking around since it only happens every so often. It feels like I'm walking around with a needle in my foot almost. Usually last like 5-10 minutes.

This sucker is hurting bad tonight. 14 hours on my feet in work boots will do it though...

What kind of pain is it? If it is like a sharp stabbing pain, that is a pretty good sign of a damaged nerve.

Right on that exact point it's a sharp pain. But it sort of radiates out from there down the side/top/bottom of my foot on the pinky side.

I know for foot cramps all one needs to do is heat up the foot and the tense muscles will begin to relax and the cramps will go away.

Even though this pain you always feel is different than a foot cramp, have you tried heating up you're feet ?

If all else fails maybe you should seek out some acupuncture treatment.

Yeah, I have tried using those foot soaker/heater things to no avail. It sure did make my other foot feel nice and cozy though lol Bad leg veins do run in my family, my father and brother both had vericose veins and have had them removed. I have yet to see any sign of them, and have never had foot or leg cramps. I am also in better shape then they are lol

I use to have pain in my chest due to what the doctors seemed to think was a rib defect or an abnormal calcium growth on one of my ribs, but none of them were sure and x-rays couldn't really show it. That was when I was younger and I have far outgrown that now, but every once in a while, for no reason at all, the backs of my eyes will just feel like they are on fire and I have to shut them. It's not something attributed to being tired, nor do I have an eye infection in either eye. Wish I could describe the feeling for you better, but just think about the heat from a fire on your palm at a close distance, then couple that with a not so wonderful tearing feeling and then move that pain to a location that feels like the backs of your eyes. That seems to happen once every 6 months or so.

Hope your foot feels better man.

Maybe I should get my chest/rib pains looked into. I don't think it was a calcium deficiency, but it could be something very serious since I find myself in unbearable pain for hours on end. Doctors gave me the same story as you guys, too: "Get an extra supportive bra" (made the pain worse); "You are just very 'top heavy.' Have you had any back pains?" (Of course my back hurts. I'm 9 months pregnant -.-). Then I tell them I had costochondritis when I was younger and ask if this could be a chronic issue related to that, but the other doctors go "Oh, yeah, must be that! Just take pain medicine."

Did your chest pains completely go away? I've been dealing with mine since I was about 14, but they've never gotten easier to deal with. Sometimes I feel like I have 500 lbs of pressure on my sternum or my rib cage will just completely collapse.

Did they ever check your lungs? Sometimes when you aren't able to breathe properly, it feels like you have a rock lying on your chest as you are trying to breathe.

I had a serious problem breathing at one point and I was screened for asthma (negative). My OB just said it was probably low blood sugar that caused the problem. Besides that, my breathing is slightly more labored than the average person, but that is probably due to the tachycardia issue I've always had (RHR is usually 110+, but doctors have never worried about it). I sincerely hope I don't have a chronic respiratory problem that went overlooked =/

They went away at some point, but the random back of the eye pain hasn't. lol

Except of course that even on the Goon Doctor boards the replies are going to be the same as here: Go see a doctor. First doctor didn't help? Go see someone else. :P
