Hi guys. I just recently installed and updated FFXI (i had just reformatted) and installed .net framework 2.0 and for some reason every 1-3 minutes my computer will lock up for about 2-4 seconds. I can't explain it, and I'm not sure why it's doing it. I am running 512 pc2700 ram, windows xp home SP2, nVidia 6800xtreme ddr3 256 video card, and an AMD 2700+ processor. It was not doing the "hangs" until i installed and updated FF. In fact, it wasn't hanging until I got internet and updated FF, it wasn't doing it.

If anyone has any possible thoughts on why it would hang like this, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help me out. It hangs FF too, obviously. Again, any and all help is appreciated.

hmmm it might be an issue with your video card. I had a problem where if I overclocked the card too hard, my system would hang for 20 seconds. This only happened in games.

It might also be a heating issue, though I'm not sure how that relate to the just a software update. Try updating your vid drivers as well.
 
If you have the error reporting service running, you can see whats causing the hang up if winxp is able to log the problem.
Control panel > administrative tools > Computer management > event viewer

Or if you able to (when it locks up), ctrl + alt + del to bring up task manager and see what program/file if causing the hang up. Also may be a software conflict and running a registry cleaner could also fix that.

You said u also installed .net. Try removing that to see if theres a problem there and reinstalling if so/not.
 
when my system hangs, or rather, when FFXI hangs, my cpu usage goes to 0%, not the common 100%, and system idle process shows 99 next to it. Very strange. Checked the even scheduler, nothing registers when the hang happens. Uninstalled .net framework 2.0 and set my video card back to factory setting with the newest drivers. Still hangs.

Kinda stumped.

try cleaning up your heatsink, make sure you got silicone placed well on the cpu and that theres no over run on the motherboard, lock ups of this kind tend to be heat problems sometimes, and it sounds like its in that area if your cpu is lockin up at specific percents.
If not that, youll wanna make sure all your drivers are updated
and that your ram is seated firmly in the slot, check all programs running in the background to make sure nothing is eating up cpu more than it should be.
 
Try Defrag your comp, i had the same problem before with my old computer, check if it your ffxi eating up all the memory rams, and if you have new aim, uninstall that and use classic aim, new aim will eat your rams, and cpu usage like crazy!
 
Could be heatsink but my temperature monitors say everything is in the green. I've closely monitored system usage, nothing is bad or eating up memory. It's my computer that is hanging I just found out; not just FFXI. I think i'm going to completely wipe my cpu and reformat the HD. Like i said, it wasn't doing this at all until I installed and updated ffxi.
