Fracture

You sir are comparing a MMORPG to a FPS. For a FPS to have that type of playtime and remain played like it is.. is again nuts. Not to mention the records its set for sales.

OK, how about Counterstrike? Battlefield? Unreal Tournament? Those series have had ginormous success. Though I'm sure Halo beats those on appeal, ease > quality for the majority of the population.

I have and always will attribute the success of Halo to a simple formula. Pretty graphics + relatively skill-free multiplayer + one of the first console games of its type to have online play = Halo selling like hotcakes. Hell, it's identical formula to FFXI's early days on the PS2. It sold the MMO market to the everyday consumer because it was something they didn't need a nice computer for.

Halo brought this to shooters lol...
Halo CE 5,000,000+ Sold
Halo2 7,000,000+ Sold
And here are the scary numbers...
June 20, 2006 More then 500,000,000 Online matches played. More then 710,000,000 Hours. By May 12, 2007 the number of online matches had hit 5,000,000,000... Dude thats just rediculous and cant be denied lol. Halo brought interest into shooters, which is why the market for them is flooded now.. Hey i love other shooters and some are better then halo imo. But these numbers are just sick lol.

EVERYONE likes easy. However, some of us prefer a harder game too.

I'd be willing to also bet that if C.S. 1.6 wasn't just a Half-Life mod, it would have some pretty numbers too in terms of sales. Matches played I'm sure Halo 2 can't hang with it because it was around when Halo was still a seed in Daddy's gum shop. UT2k4 probably has it beat too. I bet you those numbers you found where only for CONSOLE games. PC has always been flooded with shooters, Halo had nothing to do with that. Hell, most PC shooter fans think Halo is just horrible. Their PC versions are complete shit compared.

Im sure Counter Strike has a hell of alot more matches played than Halo. Its been around alot longer, and has had like hundreds of updates

I believe that the only reason Halo has done so well was that it came out on the Xbox and not the PS2. There wasnt hardly any competition in the Xbox then and of course it became the most popular game against the PS2. But if it had come out for PS2, im sure it would have been just another FPS since the PS2 has had alot more shooters than Xbox1.

All of this has already been touched on. To sum it up, Xbox live made it a hit and its easy multiplayer gameplay kept it a hit. It now has and has had plenty of competition. It's still the easiest therefore, sadly, the biggest.

Well most the stuff you guys have thrown back are true. But Halo brought FPS and shooters period to front on consoles. Where the money is for devs. Where like you said, people who want easy and consistant with just overall great gameplay..(sounds like casual gamer?which makes up most of game market?) Listen even if you dont like the game just leave it alone lol, and i assure you the sales will still hit 6Mil+? 5Billion machmade games? JESSSSSUUUUSS. The succes of Halo sparked some cheesy ripoffs and yet some great games that are still to be released. And i enjoy the game =D

I think Goldeneye was the game that brought shooters to flood consoles not Halo. Haze rightly should be up there with the same hype as Halo 3. I mean shit... it was obviously the same core that did Goldeneye that formed Free radical. Rare is just the crap they left behind to make Perfect Dark games that suck. This is the team that really made FPS popular. They're the guys that had millions of people playing offline deathmatch all day long.

I will not post about this "What halo did" type of stuff again. 5Billion matchmade games, period. No facts for golden eye, no facts for anything else said here. 5Billion matchmade games flooded FPS and shooters. Hell its the reason sony made Killzone lol. well ill post here again when the topic has shifted :p

Xbox live had nothing to do with Halo being a hit, considering that the first Halo wasn't even live compatable. It was just a solid and fun game, and much like goldeneye fun to play with your buddies while drinking beer. Now I can't speak for anyone else but before I even had a live account I would host LAN parties at my house with 2 TVs/Xboxs in one room and 2 TVs/Xboxs in another and we would get a keg of beer, choose teams and play Halo via system link until 4 am. While my friend used to hosted PC LAN games in the same fashion, Halo was just better because you didn't need all that many systems to accomidate a lot of people.

And to theOsyris, I think that Goldeneye is what brought FPS to the front on consoles, Perfect Dark expanded on it with customization, TimeSplitters perfected it and then came Halo with little bits and pieces of all three molded together in a solid package. Oh, and added the Warthog.

All I'm hoping for though is Halo 3 to bring it back to the fun that Halo had in LAN games. Specially considering that Halo 2 multiplayer just flat out sucked.

All I ask is that they bring back the pistol and get rid of those god damned swords.

swords are back, for those who hacked the beta and made it into the custom games, we got to see the new pistol, slower shots, more powerful hits. the wraith, now with a turret on top to accommodate a second player on board. and the sword, now with battery power and a delay between slashes and delay when switching from gun to sword.

at least the sword isn't so overpowered anymore :P pistols were the bomb though. Best sniping gun in the game :D

Trade my Xbox live for "supports LAN play" then.

I don't buy the "facts". Link, link to other games of high stature, etc.? Also remember, Goldeneye wasn't online therefore no one could really track the multiplayer match numbers. However, Goldeneye has still outsold both titles as far as I can find. That alone makes Firestreak correct if I'm correct.

I *still* play goldeneye online with a 64 emulator with friends. House Rule: Nobody plays Odd Job or we fucking break their knees IRL.

I would too if I could get an emulator to work just right with a 2 stick setup. If you get the left stick to be sidestrafe and forward backward and right stick always for looking, then when you go into aiming mode it's all screwed up. Can't get it done just right and I can't go back to single stick damnit!

Once they get a better linux for PS3 for emulators I'm planning on getting some goldeneye setup for there. It'd be cool to play that old school without needing an N64.

the original xbox had a N64 emulator with golden eye on it and it played just fine on the xbox controller, graphics had no bugs except for a little glitch on the main menu, the game itself ran very smooth on the Rice filter.

I still play Goldeneye and Perfect Dark on my N64. Those games are just classics. More Goldeneye than Perfect Dark but you gotta show it some lovin' too.
