kk, so I was taking pics with my new Fraps thingy^^ and I took a pic of all my job accomplishments and I reliazed that a mage is the only job I have ever been. Ive been thf but that doesnt really count that much.
I was wondering what tips and what jobs you guys would recommened a guy who has been playing a mage 99% of this FFXI life. ; ;

I can relate. I've been playing BLM and WHM, and have only recently taken a side road into melee so I can get the fabled Treasure Hunter ability with a Lv. 15 THF. I wanted to do it right and leveled WAR enough to sub while I did, but I haven't tried being a THF in a party. I plan to stick to mage classes for a long time, but advice and insight is always appreciated.

well, it all depends on what melee job you plan on taking. all melee jobs need to have another melee job to accompany it. IE-pld with war, nin with war(in most cases), war with mnk...those are the typicals for melee. if your planning on doing melee, your first choice should be war since most jobs will require war sub to lvl it to some point. its going to be a long process to get a melee job to something that you want because you will have to do a few other jobs to get what you really want...like for me, i wanted rng with a nin sub. i had war lvd so i used rng/war up to about 30 then i had to drop back and start lvling nin. best advice though is to decide what combo you want, and ask advice on those specific jobs.

Yea, I leveled THF first bit I wish I would have leveled WAR first because I need WAR for my NIN sub. I had MNK subbed pre-NIN and that was a mistake because now I have to go back and level WAR. So WAR all they way.

I just read what I just wrote and I think I'm confusing myself. BCNM's til 2 in the morning make mind go blank.

What Masterorion said is true and I just want to support his idea of starting with War. As M said, it's a good sub for a few melee job. But since you have played a mage ever since you started, playing WAR could help you in your mage job (not that I am saying you are bad! lol I am sure you are both great at your jobs). You'll experience first hand what it is to tank and how hard it can be sometime to hold aggro when blm is nuking like there is no tomorrow! lol

All I'm saying is that experiencing for yourself what a Tank is, you could learn a few tricks on how to help your tank control aggro when you play mage of DD.

Tarutaru melees are sooo cute and funny. It always brings a smile to my face when I see a Taru in full armor. I with I could pick 'em up and throw them for uber damage!

war will also help you get a basic feel for what the melee jobs do. its not specialized in much unless you have a nin sub. as a war, you wont tank a whole lot starting out because the pts look for plds and nin to tank but will take a war as a last resort.
im sure that in your pts, you have watched what the melee jobs do, when you pt as a mage, it is a good opportunity to see how things work and what strategies the melee use

I always thought Rng was a good in-between for mages, since they are more of a hands-off job, but melee non-the-less. It gives you opprotunities to try things like Engauging the mobs(Pulling) and Finding out about links and what not. It also is not the most heavily armored job of the lot, which you are use to, but will teach you the harsh realities of being melee...

Path eto Ranger:

Take Monk to 5
Take Warrior to 10(Subbing Monk)
Take Nin to 20(Subbing War)
Take Ranger to 40(Subbing Nin)

By the time you do all of th eabove you should have a better understanding on how Melee jobs work, and can be in pretty good standing to go back and double the levels of each job(Rng to 75 not 80).

Monk as a precurser, set you in the mood, a kinda Hands on approach, nothing complex about it, just hit attack and go...

War, get minor tanking duties, Learn to and when to provoke.

Nin, bring in finese of the Melee jobs. It doesn't really shine till you are about lvl 40 or so, but it's still a good job to 20. Problems with Nin only arise with Party Dynamics between 24-32.

Ranger, Pretty self Explainatory, You basically have a really advanced version of 'Gil Toss' you throw your Money at a mob in the form of Arrows and Get a lot of invites...

Once you get Nin to 20, you can take most other Melee jobs to 41. Once you get War to 37 you can take Nin to 37+ and with either of those two subs, you can take any Melee job all the way successfully.

The trick is to keep your Subs leveled before hand. Less interuption and consistant gaming.

thats actually a good plan witht he job lvling...unless of course you want to take war, mnk, or nin all the way.keep in mind also that some jobs HAVE to have a war sub. i can say thtat rng is alot of fun. only downfall is that it is expensive unless you make your own equip. so with rng, you will want to raise woodworking also .

I've seen them also and the tiny Pally's! I have nothing against Taru melee, they are just distracting! I litterally want to smash or crush them. I also get this urge when I see a cute little puppy or kitten. Maybe I should seek help.

Compare and Contrast

hmm...that top picture is a close similarity to the taru pic on the bottom

I think the Taru on the bottom helped me get my Castle Zvahl coffer! What's his name?
