Frusterated

Thanks Lanien :) I'll let you know if I need to do that. And Trist, the Dell wasn't from Best Buy :p The HP was ;)

You could pirate windows (OH NOES) and reinstall it that way, by wiping the partition

also could buy a hard drive scrubber and completely clean the clock out, then reformat it

More then likely that guy is gona tell you to reformat it if you dont want to pay anyone to fix it, depending on how much the info on the comp means to you of corse. Otherwise your lookin at a good $200-$300 fix. Iv had a similar problem where windows just wouldnt run and thats what they wanted to charge me.

If you want to reformat it, get yourself a windows XP disk, and when you turn it on push F2 or F11, whichever brings you to the DOS program. From there you can force it to run off the CD if it doesnt want to do it on its own. Its been a while so i dont remeber the exact steps i took but it should be straight foward.

I hope so. The dude I called (I'm bringing it to him on Saturday) said if it's a HD problem he can fix it but if it's a MB problem... I'm fucked.

Until I moved out of my dad's house, we only had Mac's. The only time we got rid of them was when my dad saw a different one he wanted. None of them ever crashed. This is depressing -.-

More then likely it is HD failure. Easiest thing to do is to have someone replace it(or replace yourself if you know what your doing. usually no more then a 5-10 min job tops...) then call HP Tech support and deal with the Indian outsourcing tell them your HD crashed and you need recovery CDs sent to you(I know they do it ive done it a number of times where i work). Use the recovery CD's which is pretty much the F11 you did earlier and use their software/driver CD to make everything work correctly. Only thing they need over the phone usually is the models serial number.

The beginning sounded like a video card over heat. The next bit seemed like a virus or "worm" that took some files from you, snagging that missing one. I wasn't given disks eather, prevents you from passing out free OS (Operation Systems). So, a possible, 'cheap'(depending on income) idea is to buy Windows XP Home Edition and get a new hard drive...install the new OS on that hard drive, plug the current one in as a second one. Drag all needed files into the new one, and just in case, keep the old one somewhere and you'll be fixed up. Good luck, and if I have any more ideas, I'll be sure to post.

(Sorry if this was already posted, didn't want to forget this solution since it's one of those kinda thoughts)

Are hal.dll universal for each version of WinXP? If so, I could always upload the file for you Mire.

I don't think so, it's a "driver" file which is prolly used with many other files, If the file is sent, there might be other errors since another file next on the "examine" list could be missing. I could be wrong.

I'd guess the problem is caused by the guy building your comp not earthen himself while handling the parts of the computer. That normally causes the computer to fuck up several months, even years later.

If you ever want a computer, its better to buy the parts seperate and building it yourself, or have someone you know build it. Mainly because the guys building it couldn't care less what happens to your computer when the insurance runs out. Most people also don't buy an insurance, and so, the people building it normally don't bother being careful with earthening themselves. Which can cause serious problems to your hardware parts later.

Did your computer not qualify for the repairs?

It did. But they sent me this email AFTER they told me they wouldn't look at it. Which is AFTER I gave it to the computer repair place. So they're playing the "Now we don't know if it was faulty or if the computer repair place messed it up" card. Yet another company that has fucked me over. I would never had given it to a repair place had they sent this email sooner.

And that is why I always build my own computers from the get-go. Hopefully your Toshiba is decent though :-/ lol

Uh. I don't know where to see it. It was a clearance sale at Staples and I can't find it lol. I'll look at the warranty when I get home.

I meant specs of the computer. I can figure out what a warranty comes with lol

Well, to be honest. If you get into the laptop world, the screen is never, if rarly, ever protected by a warranty or extended warranty. If you read the fine print, warranties will rarly include damages to the screen (physical ones that is, even if you have accidental coverage) Or you buy a more expensive warrenty that covers screens. Honestly, if you broke the screen, forget replacing it... it costs more to replace it than to get a new computer.

Regards to your windows OS, but from what you have done from the start, the OS seems to be in really bad shape. even if you fix it, you are better off reinstalling the whole system with a fresh copy of windows. (There are many ways of getting a copy of windows /cough) But yeah.

Anyways your best options is to take the HDD out and use a laptop HDD external cover/case to plug it into another computer and get all your important stuff out of it. put the HDD back in and reformat. But it seems like your graphics card is about to die anyways... so yeah... you needed that new laptop :D (BTW, restoring or upgrading a old copy of windows is almost always 100% chance to have some sort of problems. might as well not bother with that crap.)

BTW, Out of all the laptops i have used, the one that gave me the least problems is a macbook pro. i play FFXI on it, (benched over 7000 points, sweet... and this was before apple upgraded the video card in the laptop) and it runs windows better than a desktop i built a few years back... my desktop barley reaches 5000 ... but then again i didnt use the top of the line harddware for my desktop... just a higher end line desktop i guess you can call it. :) I already replaced my logic board with apple due to graphics card being faulty. I just went back again to get my logic board replaced once more, i think they replaced it with another faulty logic board (wah) but yeah. Im amazed the staff at the genius bars know what the hell they are doing and how to test for problems when you describe your issues :)

oh yeah, i love playing ffxi with my mac running windows. soo smooth and smexy on my widescreen :D I dont know a lot of people who looks at apples for gaming, but i must say the laptop is pretty damn solid :D

Given the company i work for warranty repairs Toshiba HP and IBM/Lenovo and only items in the
office for repairs are Toshiba i have to say sux2bu.... unless its a high end Satellite Pro its not worth the 1500.

1) Mac =/= Windows
2) if a warrenty repair place can't give you a fairly accurate idea of the problem based on your description then you need a new repair center
