I'm cross-posting this in both GD and Reality Sinks In, because I'm not sure which it belongs in.
Last night, when my girlfriend and I went to fill up our car, our low coolant light came on. I grabbed a bottle of Prestone from the Citgo and popped the hood to top it off. and something bad happened. Very bad.
I don't know if the snow caused something to slip, or I didn't prop it up fully, or what, it doesn't really matter. The hood creaked, then fell. I pulled my arms back as fast as I could, but my hands were right underneath it when it shut. The next thing I clearly remember is getting set up in the ER at the county hospital a few miles down the road.
This morning I had four or five x-rays and some other tests done on both of my wrists to check for permanent damage. Around 3 PM the doctors came back with the news - both of my wrists have major scaphoid fractures with ligament damage, and minor nerve damage to my left thumb and right ring finger. They fit me into temporary scaphoid casts until my follow-up X-rays in 1 or 2 weeks. They've got me going back just about every day for therapy and strength/flexibility testing. I think I first realized how serious this was when Jadey (my girlfriend) needed to help dress me because I couldn't put on a shirt or coat by myself.
Eating's hard. I'm sipping my Coke through a straw. And FFXI? I can kind of sit a PS2 controller between my two casts and move the analog sticks slightly, but more than 10 or 15 minutes and it's way too uncomfortable to keep going. Partying is obviously out of the question for the next month or three. I'll probably be on now and again leveling a craft, or chocobo digging (I now absolutely hate the fact that fishing requires so much dexterity.
) I may buy some speech-to-text recognition software to make computer/net/etc use easier for the time being since asking Jadey to type posts (like this one is) for me isn't something I want her to have to do for me.
All in all, I just wanted to let people know that I'm not going to be around as much as I normally am, both on QCDN and in-game. If I had plans to do anything mission/quest/leveling/anything related, I apologize in advance for not being able to. All I can hope for now is a speedy recovery and no permanent damage.
Take care, everyone.
