Here are some interesting things I was thinking about in Science class while
{supposedly} balancing chemical equations.

The Similarities Between Full Metal Alchemist and FFXI:
Item Synthesis: Inolves transforming matter into something else. (I apologize knowledge of synthesizing has decreased a smidgen) For example, a set of Yagudo Beads into a spool of grass thread.
As quoted from http://www.fullmetalalchemist.info/alchemy.html
The first step is understanding in which a person understands the molecular composition of an object.
Obviously, to synthesize an object you must know how to make it. Knowledge of the ingredients is an key thing to item synthesis.

The second and third step of Alchemy occur simultaneously in game.
The second step is decomposition in which all bonds in the substance are broken through the use of alchemic energy and the final step is reconstruction in which those atoms are reconstructed into something new.
This is when you get the new item.

In addition, another important part of alchemy is alchemic light. This occurs when transmuting (synthesizing) something and the colors vary by what type of alchemy is being done. Which is similar to in game.

What about equivalent exchange?
Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost
That is the law of equivalent exchange found here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equivalent_Exchange

In the entry it also mentions the philosopher's stone (not the one from HP)
Which is thought to be an exception to the laws of equivalent exchange.
This stone can be considered relevant to the crystals used in the game.

Furthermore, perhaps there are more ties between Final Fantasy XI &Full Metal Alchemist than business related connections.

Considering FMA, the anime, was produced by Square-Enix, you'll probably see a lot of ties like that.

But, you're forgeting, the thought of Alchemy is almost as old as science itself. Alchemy dates back almost 3 millenia, while it was basic chemistry and medicine at heart, the same Philosopher's Stone rumour was alive as well.

Theres a reason Lead didn't change in to Gold, and other alchemic formulae failed such as that one. Thus, the rumour of a "Philosopher's Stone" was made up. If you couldn't make something through alchemy, you needed the magical made up stone to do it. Simply, and obviously put, they didn't exist, thus real life Alchemy died centuries ago, as further advances in other scientific fields occured.

so that means we have to bring up the old science of alchemy and IMPROVE IT!! D:

Blimey

I was just reading through alot of stuff on Wikipedia and W:shok: w. I knew Alchemy was a science but the amount of stuff in there is just amazing. I found so many cnnections to things I have never noticed. I think I have found my new study. *Goes and finds a large pile of relevant books and hides in random corner*

Alchemy for the most part relates to the basics of science.

I.E. Matter cannot be destroyed, it is only broken down and rearranged.

interesting fact, there is an actual law in the United States making the alchemic transmutation of lead into gold illegal

And interestingly enough, this idea is even older in the Western world than most people realize. The pre-Socratic philosophers of ancient Greece all had their own theories, albiet immature and crude, of the composition of the universe. Virtually all of them describe conditions of things such as atoms, matter & anti-matter co-existing, and the Law of Conservation of Matter/Energy, attraction of molecules, etc. And this is around 600 BCE, long before the supposed "invention" of physics, astronomy, chemistry.

Not really anything to do with FMA, just alchemy and the lore that surrounds it in general.

The Druw's avatar is the Green Ranger . . . I cannot tell you what a throwback to childhood that was.

I know this is off-topic, but it sort of relates to FFXI ties to other pop culture phoenomena: a man in green that uses his dagger to "call wyvern?"

This is more off-topicness, but ... meh.

Did you hear that the fellow who played the green ranger was arrested a few months ago, with his wife, for murdering somebody and stealing his/her boat?

I think it was last year around christmas time. Pathetically enough, I, in my childhood found him to be my favorite X_x.

No frikkin way. Tommy, the green ranger, is still in new episodes of power rangers!

..Not..not that I watch Power Rangers. Because thats totally gay. But I like, you know, noticed it while I wasnt watching the show.

Because it was like..two channels down. I was waiting for Animaniacs to come on and I watched it for like twenty minutes, okay!?

;_;

On-topic, I think the relation between FMA and FFXI's alchemical process is due in part simply to, as someone else previously stated, the universalness (is that even a word?) of the alchemical ritual. It's the same everywhere you look for alchemy. Even in Altier Iris, the alchemical process is the same. You take two things, combine them, magically their components break down and fuse into some new object.

'Course it costs mana in that game in addition to your two items you use to make the one item, but you can get mana anywhere.

This post has made me consider quiting BLM and cooking, and becoming an Alchemist Beastmaster! I will carry 7 jugs of Alchemic Brew and make some Homunculi to go find me the Philosopher's Stone!! Bwahahahahaaaa!!

lol funny peice of info, science really can turn lead into gold now lol, only problem is it costs more to change the proton count of an atom than gold is worth lol. Guess they weren't to far off thinking it could be done back then, just looking in all the wrong places lol.

*SPOILER*

If you seen the end of FMA you would know that equivalent exchange wasn't true, since people that died in our world gave power to alchemy in there world.

Something that hasn't been said here yet about similarities is The Skulls in Eldieme Necropolis

Skull of Envy
Skull of Sloth
Skull of Greed
Skull of Pride
Skull of Lust
Skull of Wrath

Those are the names of all the Humunculus in FMA Coinencidence? I think not

or it could just be 6 of the 7(?) deadly sins..?

Theres a Skull of Gluttony too, so yes. All 7 sins. The Homunculii are named after said sins too, but guess what? They're a lot more older than Full Metal Alchemist/FFXI :P

I was shocked (not being a member of the alchemy guild) to find a philosopher's stone in the AH. This was just the other month, and I've been playing for almost 2 years. I flipped out and was like "Zomg! Where are the elric brothers!!!"
