G4 is previewing LBP soon(street fight too)

Are your games available on PC or other consoles?
  • Sony Computer Entertainment publishes for us exclusively, so there are no Insomniac Games video games for the PC or consoles other than the PlayStation One or PS2.

Ya, they publish them, but they don't own Insomniac, so Insomniac COULD find another publisher (once their contract with Sony is up) and produce on more systems.

First Party means that Sony owns the development team and the company under them though doesn't it? >.>

Edit: Ya First Party means it's made by Sony themselves, Second is a company owned by Sony, third is a company not my Sony

Not necessarily completely, but Sony holds a huge share in Insomniac. Insomniac isn't held by contract, but buy fear of "If I develop for another company, Sony sells our stock and our price plummets. Oh shit, let's not do that."

Third party there is no affiliation whatsoever beyond that single game.

Take your pick.

I see what you mean, that's not a bad strategy for holding a company under your grip :P though not ethical >.> wonder why they didn't do it with more companies.

It's ethical. Insomniacs would have nothing to fear if they didn't NEED the money to begin with.

Sony owns Insomniac, that MAKES them first-party. They don't have to be founded by Sony, only under their direct control, which they are.

Bungie is first party for Microsoft, they were their own company until Microsoft bought them, same thing with Insomniac.

If you look on the cover of Resistance, there is the sony logo on it. Insomniac may have done it, but they are considered a first party developer. Same with Uncharted being developed by NaughtyDog.

But Bungie isn't first party anymore.. they are on their own, there was even that whole "Bungie leaving Microsoft" thing. And Insomniac isn't exactly owned by Sony, though through stocks I guess they are, but that seems more Second Party than First Party. There's a difference! :P

Microsoft owns first rights to EVERYTHING that Bungie does. Second party isn't a real term. It's just a fake name these companies like to consider themselves. Whether Bungie likes it or not, they are pretty much still owned by Microsoft.

The difference between first party and second party is that first party were created by the company, while second party were independent and bought by the company. That is the only distinction, like Lanien said, second party doesn't really exist, because there's no actual difference between the situations. Insomniac can call themselves a second party company all they want, but they are the property of Sony; how they came to be Sony's property is completely irrelevant. There's only first party, third party, and first party that wants to call themselves something different.

Stocks or through private ownership, ownership is ownership; how they bought the company doesn't matter, only that they own it now.

I thought that even though Bungie separated from Microsoft, Microsoft only owns rights to Halo-related products and not anything else?

Just some clarification please, I swore I read that somewhere.

Microsoft owns all Halo and Halo-related projects past, present and future. They also reserve the right to license/publish any game that Bungie makes first before any other company has a chance. If Bungie makes a game and Microsoft says they don't want to publish it, then Bungie is free to find any publisher they want, whether it be Sony, Activision, Ubisoft, etc. The chance of that ever happening? I say slim.

At least that is how I remember the settlement going.

It may just be bs but I heard most, or at least more, multiplatform developers are using the PS3 as the primary device and then porting it to the 360. Supposedly it is easier to take a game from the PS3 and get it running smoothly on the 360 than visa-versa.

True or false? I know not.

If you research it, you'll find the answer to be true. Some game developers believe the quality of X360 game development even benefits from the advantages provided to developers when it comes to PS3 development.

That's what my sources tell me =)

Originally Halo was being developed for the Mac. Steve Jobs (Apple Computers), actually presented Halo for the first time. Then Bill went "Caw"$"Caw"$$"Caw$$$". In my opinion, that is the one thing that keeps X360 in the race up to this day. I think all the other developers learned from Bungie's mistakes and maintain their flexibility to make games for all the other systems.
