Last night I was going to afk at a NM pop and try to get the ToD.
When I opened up my chat filters the window began to expand on the top left, but before the text was displayed the game froze and I recieved a windows error. I hit Don't send like always, and reopened the game thinking nothing of it. Logged in, opened config clicked on chat filters and BAM crash again...

Repeat 5 more times and picture me throwing my wireless keyboard across the room..

Ok, Question is, has anyone had this problem, I've tried this with windower, I've tried it without. Both crash. Any Ideas? I have been playing fine for 5 months now so I'm at a loss. I work in IT for a living yes I've tried all the normal fixes, check files, restart, etc etc.

Used to have a crazy crashing problem when I would encounter a lot of reflective surfaces; water in The Boyadha tree, lots of bard songs hitting people at the same time (more than one BRD), or anywhere with a lot of water. I uninstalled and reinstalled and everyting was ok. Perhaps one of your files got altered mid write and is damaged, problem is finding which one without doing a full reinstall.

Good luck finding your problem.

hmm

Using simple Logic then..
I would assume if I copied the .dat for the chat filter window from my wifes computer and copy it over mine I would be good..

Anyone know which folder contains UI?

Going off memory here, but I believe it is ROM 119/51.dat. If not, it is 119/57.dat. One is for status icons, and the other is for text/chat.

While you may have modded this one yourself, it might not be the probelm. THe game constantly reads .dats as you play, sometimes can get caught in a memory loop which alters the file in transition while being processed. I think this would most likely be your cause.

I've seen something similar to that, only where instead of having the game crash everytime you try to login, the game is just frozen in place and you can't do anything.

The problem was solved by having someone else log into the character and moving the character to a new zone.

You could try having Susuki log into your account from the pc she plays if you haven't already (or you could do that) and see if it still crashes. If not, just move your character out of the zone and then go back to your computer and login and hopefully that will work.

One thing I would try instead of a total reinstall/reupdate is to try a System Restore. That feature has saved my ass alot, including fixing a messed up audio bug/problem I got last week in ffxi. If you've not personally reconfigured System Restore, there will be system checkpoints created ever so often, or when something major occurs to your system. Just use a restore point from, oh, like 2 weeks back, it'll take a long time, becuase it'll actually restore your pol and ffxi .dat files (which takes time), then you can reupdate. (When I did that, I started to get worried it was taking so long. Then realized what it was doing and had a laugh at my own expense  )

**If you don't know how to do this, read below. If you do, oh well, skip to near bottom, sorry**
Easiest way to run system restore is to hit F1, then enter System restore, and click the "Run the System Restore Wizard" shown below

systemrt3.jpg

The wizard is dirt simple to use, just click "restore my computer to an earlier time" (the default) then next, the pick a date that has a bolded number from a bit back, then next, it'll warn you about open programs and saving, all that jazz. Click next, it'll reboot your pc, and it'll look like it's hung up on the Windows loading screen. Just walk away from your pc for awhile, and come back.

After you get back into windows it'll pop up a message box saying it system restored. After you get back into POL (use the official .exe, cause I've run into problems updating pol/ffxi using the windower), it'll re-update, and so will ffxi. Hopefully that'll do it. If not...well, reinstalling will suck, cause atm I can't think of what else to do.

Edit: K, I'm a dumbass, totally didn't see that you worked in IT till after I reread your OP. Still, I'm leaving the bit about how to use system restore cause other ppl might not.

I think you may have just found my problem .
I am running the User Interface mod that was listed here on the site, changes font and symbols to be more graphically appealing. And I believe I remember 119 being on of the folders, Ill try that thanks, Im at work atm :(

Also I tried escaping to tahrongi canyon and warping to whitegate and in both places it freezes and then crashes when opening the chat filter window. I can log into the game and do everything I can normally, I just cant change my chat filters.
I will try from Susuki's computer tonight, as she doesnt have the mod on there, if need be I will just remove the 119 folder and let the update reinstall those files (gonna miss that mod though) /cry

Also any Idea why it would only start happening lately? Did the update break the mod?

Try check for error for any corrupted files, may help a bit :P

when i had blue screen on my old computer, it corrupted 120 files of .dat in my ffxi, it crash everytime i open my check log.

check your .dat and your graphic card

I'll try all this when I get home guys thanks ^^

oh.. and ...
