I want'd to post this for a while and now since i'm bored, what do yaw think? I know it's occtionally in pts "Hey I need to go, u know i got irl things to do". Yet what if it was something you want'd or "Needed", such as a mission?
Now i'm not say'n a family members been a car accident, but the game is still important, i'm more asken something not so serious. I'm asken has there been any time where you 'Could' go out and watch a movie, but chose to stay and lvl or even call'd in sick for work that One time you want'd something.
Also pressuring other people to stay for one thing that 'suppose' to be quick. I recall a few members in a exp around kazham with my pld doing decent, yet a member had to leave and two members pressure'd her to stay for that last 700 exp since no replacments were out. She stay'd the last 700 exp at the cost of being an inch late.
I also ask what will happen in the next year or so when the game does become outdate'd. Would it really be worth having all those stressful times and all those fights with other ppl?
For those who ask why I play, is simply because i do enjoy most of the people on this game, they do make me laugh and smile. Yet i do expect to leave this game when something new comes out as for now, i dont mind being a little late for class and staying late nights for those whom i call friends. Just asken for those what they think.

Honestly, In my opinion. RL > Game always. I often get stressed out over how you're supposed to, or it's expected you have super equipment, mind you this is just an example. I also find it amusing, that you're expect to work for digital money, just as hard as you would real money, only, you pay THEM to get to work hard....a bit of a weird exchange of currency. >.> Even with PT's, sometimes I gotta go. I often only want to PT for an hour before work, I always warn the PT, but sometimes I still catch shit for having to leave.

I can see where your coming from.

But one reason why I think RL > Game is that while the game and your game friends may not be there next year, your RL friends family or simply RL situations will be. True your game friends are your real friends (in game anyway), but with no face to put them to or no way of contacting them day to day, RL will always be more important to most.

This is the sad reality of the internet in that you are connected more than you could have ever been before, but it still is not a replacement for real life.

Not yet anyway.

I used to put too much importance on the game, and that's probably why people thought I was such a bitch and didn't like me. I was too stressed out over little things in the game, and desperately trying to avoid things going on in my real life. That was my mistake, but now I see that I had to make some changes.

Because of this, I am taking a break from the game while I try to get my life under control. I couldn't enjoy playing the game before, as much as I had tried. Hell, I sacrificed sleep all the time for the game, and did half-assed jobs on things for school because I had to do something else in the game. I've even missed school a few times for an early morning Dynamis run.

I was hurting myself this way, and I'm sure my friends and family too, being constantly in my room, not even comming out to sit down for dinner.

I think we all need to make our own priorities, the game shouldn't be first, but that's your choice. Sooner or later you have to face real life. Especially most of the adults that play, and have to pay the bills, or maybe have a young child.

How I see it, FFXI is more of a reward for me, than a chore. FFXI Isn't going to help me get to college, or make me do well in school. I used to play ffxi ALL the time when I got it, and I was doing horrible in school. FFXI was all I cared about.

I think people should prioratize whats important. School, family, work etc should come first, then reward yourself by playing FFXI for the night on weekends or something. >_>

But about the "need" and "wants". If a family member gets in a car accident and you got to go, duh..go! But if you want to go to the movies, thats fine..but I don't apprieciate it when people get on, and in the middle of a pt or something "Oh a friend asked me to go to the movies, and its more important than ffxi I gotta go" You can honostly fuck yourself

Give us a heads up "Oh in 2 hours I gotta go to the movies" or something.

...Eh x_x

hahaha when u get lv.75 FFXI becomes a choir... its gay ;-; n u wanna quit but cant cuz its like a drug!

A short time ago, I was playing onlinegames all the time. Suddenliy i didn't play only to have fun; I played only to be "good" Player and I didn't realize that.

Since I left the ******* school and started the apprenticeship, I havent got much time to play like in the school. But I really don't miss it. The RL is hard, but Im happy now.
And If I play games, I play to have fun and to relax, not to be good player or something like that.

And i think friends from the internet, will never be an alternative to real life friends. In the virtal world, I can't see my internet-friends natrual behavior(I can only see their sunny side), so I prefer my real life friends.

Never thought that i would write something like this. And sorry for my weird english.

for me RL will always take priority over game. Ive logged on in the middle of missions before when I wanted to go out. (i made sure the PT was going to make it thgouh, im not an ass^^;)

. . .

FFXI should NEVER come before ANY Real Life event, regardless of the in-game cercumstances. It doesnt matter if some Lame-Ass NM is about to pop, or if your LS scheduled some dorky-ass God, or if an HNM's window is about to open, or your 'in-game' friends are doing Mission 8-1....none of it fucking matters one damn bit. Having rank 10 wont pay your bills, killing Adamantoise wont feed your family, taking down Kirin wont get you a damn sun-tan, and owning EVERY fucking piece of 'uber' gear aint gonna put gas in your car.
Far too many people in this world get TRAPPED inside games such as FFXI, and begin sacrificing their Real Life for a video-game-life.
I tip my hat to any man or woman that has left a party/alliance or anything else because of Real Life events, because YOU are the few who still understand that Real Life takes precidence over any 'game', and i laugh at those of you that get all bent outta shape when someone has to leave because you still need to understand one simple fact: not getting 10k exp per hour, or not completing 7-2, or having to postpone your ZM4 run by one day WILL NOT KILL YOU!!!!

I totally agree with twillie, I have passed up parties, friends, and lost 2 jobs over this game, all because I wanted to be the Uber blm in the game. well was it worth it this game ? no.. this will be my 1st and last mmorpg game, and I wished I never picked this game up at comp usa 1yr and 1/2 ago. Getting all the gear in the game, or being more Uber then jps wow... what will it do for you in real life ?? not a damn thing.. once you turn off the power switch on that computer and walk out the door your a nobody again, spp i would much rather waste my time in real life getting rich then wasting time in this game making monopoly money. I give mad props to all the people who had ballz to quit, im sure your lives are much better.

While I agree with the sentiment that RL > XI, I don't agree with just ditching people without any notice because you feel like doing something else. I've left groups doing exp/missions/quests before because my friends called and wanted to go out, but I never just said "sorry, RL > game" and logged on them, I always gave them warning and did as much as I could before I left. Yes, you should put your real life ahead of any virtual one, but with a game like this you shouldn't just screw over at least 5 other people on a whim.

At the very least get a replacement or something, your friends can wait 15 minutes so that you don't completely screw over the other people who are trying to enjoy the game with you. This game is meant to be played in your spare time, so obviously you're meant to plan the game around your real life, so do that. That distinction, however, doesn't give you the right to ruin other people's fun just because you feel like it.

just to clarify, i do agree with you Bajaratt. Putting your Real Life before FFXI does NOT mean you can be a complete ass-hole when a Real Life issue comes up, certain amounts of understanding and respect should still apply to those in-game, because they are still people, just like yourself.

a few examples:
#1
you put your name in for a scheduled <insert stupid mission here> on a set date. On said date you log-in and gather for said mission. Friends call you up and say hey, we were gonna go see <insert kool movie here>, we got you a ticket. (say the movie starts in 30 min)

In this situation, there is NO reason why you should just leave your party and head over to the Theaters, you should at least have the decency to find a replacement for yourself, or inform the group, and let them decide what they want to do. Logging off immediately and saying "RL > FFXI" would be a bit extreme, not to mention horribly rude.

#2
you get an invite to exp in Sky, you put in the time to get you and all your parties shit together, and travel to sky. Then, 20 min into the party you get a phone call from your younger brother, telling you that your dad was just admitted to the ER and is unconscious.

Now this actually happened to me, and i'll tell you straight up what i did.
"/p gotta log, family emergency" and "/shutdown"
and drove straight to the hospital to meet my family.

was i wrong for not giving my party a better explanation? was i wrong for not finding a replacement? ya sure, the other five people in my party will be a bit upset. But my obligation and my loyalty are to my family, not 5 random gamers.

No one said you shouldn't go to a family emergency without warning.

What was said was that dont be a great big jackass and say "hey do you know what? i dont feel like playing ffxi i feel like going to the movies. CYA!" when you are in the middle of an xp pt.

oh yeah, RL>Game almost always. But there are exceptions to every rule.

LoL yeah exp pt's is easy i use to be able to come home from work and pt any my own time.. But its when you hit that big 75 the game turns around, it suddenly doesnt become "A game" it becomes a job, getting up in the early ass am's just for HNM's or spending 30 hrs a week in sky, I think thats what some of the posts where getting at. Its hard once you start something with end game content its hard th throw away. But when you think about it , yes you have become popular in game, but when you leave outside the front door of your house your a nobody again.. Soo is it worth it to pass up real life stuff for end game content?

Look at it this way, if you put in your resume "White Mage 75" will they give you more money... Your employer will probably laugh at you or not hire you. So RL work is more important since it will pay the FFXI Bill among many other things.

Unless the credit card company accepts Gil as form of payment or you plan on living with your parents until the 60ish, when you can get a Social Security check (wish you need to have a job to receive it) to pay for FFXI, i think you will need to get a Job to support yourself.

Not to mention Friends and Family (order not important), they are like plants, you need to give them TLC or they will die (off course not literally), but i think you known what i mean.

Well in closing in a priority scale you should give a 10 to your Family and Friends, a 9 to work or studies and a 6 to FFXI or you will end at the wellfare office.

Thats my opinion, thanks

Crap, this has to be the most insightful post I've seen on the Flameboard.
Just to add a bit:
For a year now I have been trying to put Family and work first. But what ended up happening is I had to give up something else in order to play the amount I wanted to play. For me that was sleep. When my family went to bed or My obligations for the day was over I would hop on. Within a year of getting 2-4 hours of sleep a night I gotta admit I was a total wreck... still am in a lot of ways.
I know there is a fine balance to be had.... I just haven't found it yet. Even though I had put Family/friends/work first, the game still held so much importance to me that i gave up something only I would have to pay for... sleep. Though given time that really does affect all other aspects of you life.

PS I've been trying to get to sleep on a normal basis lately. Oddly I conditioned myself not to need it so much that I can never get over 6 hours a sleep a night... I feel like I'm on military time :D
