I've been playing on the PS2 for a while, but I have to switch to my laptop for the next month or so. I've got the game up and running, so my question isn't about that part. I'd like to get a decent gamepad that's reasonably priced (since I'll only be using it for about a month) and similar, if possible, to the PS2 controller (so I don't have to adjust back later). Something I could walk into like CompUSA or Micro Center and buy off the shelf would be good, so please don't recommend buying a PS2->USB converter, unless you know a mass market store sells them. Recommendations of which ones to avoid, as well, would be helpful.

I've already heard some bad things about a Logitech gamepad that's shaped sort of like a PS2 controller. The D-pad part was apparently touchy and would end up registering directions you didn't actually want to press.

Thanks in advance for any help anyone might have!

RadioShack just started carrying PS2->USB converters for... 11.99-12.99.

If they don't have them in stock, they can order them w/no shipping charge.

I use the PS2 to USB converter and it works great, very responsive.

I highly recomend it.

Yep, a PS2 > USB controller is the only real way to go, after all PS2 controllers are comfortable and built to last :D I got my adapter for £5 from www.play.com

I use this controller for playing FFXI on PC. It has all the buttons that PS2 controllers have, it is a little bigger, but I have got used to it. I think the price was about $30 at Game Stop or EB Games. Been playing FFXI since the NA release with this controller, I have gone through only 2 of them after about 200+ days on my play time in game.

Sorry to pull some thread necromancy, but I was able to find the converter at a Radio Shack after a few fruitless tries. It seems like it was out of stock at their website, too. Thanks for the heads-up! It works brilliantly!

My personal preference is using the Xbox Controller S (same amount of buttons as PS2), Xbox->PC USB cable, and you must use XBCD controller drivers. Those are the best drivers for the controller currently. I have tried Gamecube, PS2/PC hyrbrid controllers, and neither of them are as good or lasts longer as the Xbox controller S. Hey if you do own a xbox maybe just buy the cable off ebay...or bum a controller off from a friend.

Original/Real/No 3rd Party XBOX Controller S: $30 +/-
Controller USB Cable: $5.80 (Ebay search: Xbox USB Cable [Sort: Buy It Now & By Lowest Price])
XBCD drivers can be found here: http://www.redcl0ud.com/xbcd.html
