My understanding always was you try to hit the full moon, or, failing that, as close to 100% as you can get. You'll still get some bonus at a steadily declining value somewhere in the high 80% range, I think, rather than at 25%.
Even with 40 plants, unless you missed the full moon by 30% or more, I don't think the time invested in waiting for the next one would nearly have been worth the extra profit from the the slightly better harvest...even if they HAD lasted. It may have been better to just start on the next crop immediately. It's kind of like waiting three days for a full seven of some item to sell on the AH, that would only net you 10k, instead of just vending them and putting up something else that you have piling up that would net you 30k in a few hours, over the course of several days. It's an extreme example, but the point is the same: time is money. My philosophy with saplings (back when I grew them) was just take the loss, move on, and make it up in speed. Does that make sense?
Full moon, schmull schmoon. If it's growing at 70% and there's only a day or so to go, sure, wait...but if you missed it, it's falling, but still at 90%, I say just harvest the damn thing anyway. It's close enough. ^_^
I noticed differences, sure, but unless I was way off (harvesting at less than 50%), it was never enough to wait for the next full moon to cycle through. As we know now, anyway, trying to wait out the full moon for an entire cycle will only result in plant death.
