Gay Marriage 2.0

There are certainly alot more people in the world who value the idea of traditional marriage then do not.

Yes... "traditional" marriage. Remember those? Women were the property of men, traded from family to family to solidify alliances or boost land ownership. It wasn't about love so much as it was about going to the highest bidder. Please bring back those days. Polygamy certainly gave monogamy a run for its money in the "traditional marriage" category. Let's bring that back, too. After all, women just want to be kept in groups like a harem for the amusement of one man.

"Traditional" marriage is long dead, and that's a good thing.

'-'

You even got a comment from Miros in this thread. I was wondering when that would happen.

Look DarkDante, if they view marriage as a traditional institution, that's cool. I say let them. However, Halifirien's point is valid, even if it is beyond the time frame i was thinking as "traditional." It shows marriage evolves just like religion evolves. Religion is not an unchanging thing, or otherwise we would all be catholic (if christian at all).

The view that it is traditional is wrong in my opinion though. To say such means that atheists and buddhists, agnostics and satanists, muslims and mormons (still officially classified as a cult), would be refused marriage because those marriages are not traditional.

Honestly, why care. There are more people in support of banning gay marriage than I know exist as well meaning, altruistic christians. Your politically correct deity is aware of all transgressions, not just a simple ideal banning the gays to marry. I hope this isn't taken to be a flamebait, because it is what I would say in RL to anyone: It is just a war in hypocrisy. One side is religion, the other side is America. We worship technology, cars, and money. The few that remain altruistic to religion probably wouldn't argue against a <insert opposite faith> couple getting married, but they'll fight the gays (or maybe not?).

If there is a true statement here, its that the bigots will die off and support for gay marriage will continue to grow. How many people have racist grandparents? Its just the way they were raised. No, many do not cause scenes, you can just tell by the way they talk of "people of color." Gay rights is not really all that different from civil rights, you just have the added benefit of 50 years.

The bigots on both sides will die off.

Eventually......

Hopefully you will be alive to see it happen. The successes they've had here will simply strengthen their resolve.

Or the Gay community could simply learn to try and take a little at a time, instead of continually stubbornly attacking "marriage" and demanding to be included in it.

You could have gay unions that had all the same provisions as legal marriage and when people see gays actually getting together and being provided for by the government, attitudes will change much faster. And eventually being included in "marriage" would seem to be the smartest fairest thing to do to the majority of the population.

Instead of idiotically fighting over the word "marriage", like we do now.

You could have gay unions that had all the same provisions as legal marriage...

The only reason "civil unions" are an option is because we pushed for civil marriage rights. Domestic partnerships and all the rest are inferior, but they're the compromise dangled in front of us in hopes the community will stop fighting for equality. Those partnerships would have been unthinkable a decade ago, but they're still just a stepping stone. It's like water wearing down rock.

But it's hardly "attacking" marriage to ask to be a part of it.

Marraige shouldn't give you any rights. The rights afforded by marraige should be given only by civil union. That would require people to get a civil union in addition to getting married (somewhat like they already do). That way individual churches could make the decision about gay marraige and allow it or not.

It's horse shit that a group of religious people get special rights based on who they like to stick it in, so long as they don't have the same equipment.

Uh... that's the system that's already in place. Civil marriage is a secular state function. The church-related stuff is all ceremonial and non-binding. Nobody is arguing that churches be forced to "recognize" marriages between gay people. Churches are free to think such unions are shams.

For legal purposes, a huge church wedding with hundreds of guests and a visit from the Pope is exactly the same as a ceremony performed at a Vegas Qwik-E-Wed officiated by an Elvis impersonator.

If your trying to raise the issue that race = sex, well.... you know the answer to that yourself, it does not. Sexual discrimination and racial discrimination are two very different things.

The fight gong on about gay marriage, if was simply about rights and what you are entitled to, then the fight would be over already. Most people wouldn't fight over "gay unions" or whatever you want to call it.

But it is not about that. Gay marriage proponents don't just want equal rights, they want to change what traditional marriage has meant to people who value traditional marriage.

Race and sex are not the same thing, that's true. Race is skin, and sexual orientation is who I like to bang in bed. Can also extend that to kinks. Fucking furries! But in the end, the discrimination is still the same. Gays have had people killed and bashed because of their orientation. Races have had people killed over their race. Only difference there really is some gay people can hide it. And if you think that's a good thing and they should continue doing that well...you really need to look at it in a different view.

As for traditional marriage...well Hali touches on it in a different post in my quotes.

Bigots come in all shapes and sizes.

A bigot is: a prejudiced person who is intolerant of any opinions differing from his own.

If the idea of traditional marriage is not to be respected by a certain group of people, are they not guilty of bigotry as well?

There are certainly alot more people in the world who value the idea of traditional marriage then do not. For a compromise to happen one side will have to give up something for good things to happen. Unfortunately that is the side with less voices on it.

Eventually gay marriage or whatever version it takes will prevail. But wouldn't you want something, anything......... to happen sooner?

Being stubborn about being included in traditional marriage only makes the fight that much harder.

I won't lie, I'm a bigot. I absolutely hate people who call themselves "wiggers". I hate how they come into my office like they are the hottest thing since sliced bread and then quickly change to patronize me. I will never agree with that lifestyle and I will do my best to not involve myself with ANYONE who acts or dresses like that.

That being said, I'm not trying to deny them their right to wear whatever clothes they want or enjoy their several failed marriages.

I have to ask, but what exactly does traditional marriage mean to people who have married? Do you really care that your spouse is of the opposite sex, or are you proud you were able to have the ceremony and declare to your families that you want to be together like your parents before you?

If you want to keep the gays down because you view marriage solely as a union between a man and woman before God, I want to see you keep the divorces down because marriage, in a religious sense, is a lifetime commitment.

Great post by Skaw. I give 10 points to whoever posts the pie chart of gay marriage again. You know, the one where it says who it affects.

There is civil, and there is religious. Don't confuse the two. Gay marriage isn't asking for special treatment, just asking for the same civil rights as the rest of the population. It has never been about changing the fundamental basics of your mainstream faith, or even asking you to love and accept us. If you want to make it a religious argument, then anyone outside of any mainstream faith is not entitled to the same rights as people from "normal" christian/morman/catholic etc church. But then which religion is the right one that we should all follow? Which should we base all our civil laws on? This is why religion has no business in affairs of state. Especially since multiculturalism is so prominent in most societies.

There will always be bigots, some boys will always like boys, and some people will never have a clue. Doesn't change the fact that if my partner were to die, I have no more rights regarding his affairs than some bum on the other side of the country. It's left in the hands of the family that rejected him when he was 16 and havn't spoken to him since. Darkdante, could you please explain how asking for the same rights as a heterosexual married couple in the same instance is asking for special treatment?

This is a great post. If Marriage is believed to be a man and a woman joining together under god then what about Atheists? Arc touched on this more so I'll just leave it alone.

There is no traditional marriage, that's the thing. Marriage has and always will evolve. As much as people LOVE the Beaver family, there won't be a family that perfect. Each marriage is different. Some divorce, some are then widowed, some have lovers on the side (that they both agree to) and the list goes on.

The bigots on both sides will die off.

Eventually......

Well, here's my whole real opinion on it all. I want the same rights my mom has when my father died. I want to be able to file my tax return as married or civil unionized or whatever you wanna call it. I deserve the same tax breaks as you all of the straight married people out there. If I don't get them, then I believe us gays should be asking for gay tax compensation until it's put into the federal tax law that we can file joint taxes.

What bothers me quite a bit is people who just take what they believe and run with that idea instead of stepping back and looking at not only the sides, but what people rightfully deserve as humans. Gay marriage will do nothing to the word marriage except add in the fact that same sex couples can now use that term. If we are to get a different term for it, but it means the same thing isn't that going down the same path as separate bathrooms for whites and blacks? As of now, the federal government on tax returns view people as Married filing jointly, married filing separately, surviving spouse, head of household, and single (I think I got them all). So marriage is NOT obviously just a religious item, that is why us gays should be allowed to marry as well. I'm not going to force a church to wed me though. I'll gladly have my ceremony in a different location with a judge instead of a priest. Hell, we all know gays can decorate better so it would look amazing too!

Christ, think about all of the income too. New jobs could come up, new businesses that cater to married homosmexuals (hehe). They could make a bit on their tax revenue from this. But then again they could about Marijuana as well.

Regardless, where is mah pie chart?! >:|

I'm a pretty liberal guy.

My views dictate the same thing for every person regardless of race, creed, sex, or ethnicity.

Quite frankly, I don't believe I am qualified much less possess a "right" to tell someone, anyone how or what they can or cannot do with their life. In fact, I honestly feel this way about everyone. I don't care who you are. No one is qualified to make judgements.

I can't believe people cling to any religious excuse. I don't believe any time period up to and including the founding fathers of this country had any wish to repress the rights of any individual. Put simply, live and let live people.

If I may.... The guy on the left of this picture is me. The guy on the right is my partner of 7+ years. Married on 9/30/08. We own a house together. Joint checking. He's my beneficiary and I'm his. We sleep together. I cook the meals each night. He does most of the cleaning. His elderly mother lives with us. We have 2 dogs, 3 cats and a constant flow of nieces, nephews, brothers, sisters, aunts & uncles coming through the house.

We are as married as any of you will ever be and the fact that some people decided that should be put to a vote is obscene....

Even with a CA marriage, the federal Defense of Marriage Act means we don't get the many rights a heterosexual couple gets such as:

Joint adoption
Status as "next-of-kin" for hospital visits and medical decisions should we leave the state
Right to make a decision about the disposal of loved ones remains
Immigration and residency for partners from other countries
Crime victims recovery benefits
Judicial protections and immunity
Automatic inheritance in the absence of a will
Social Security benefits for my partner
Joint filing of tax returns
Wrongful death benefits for surviving partner and children
Bereavement or sick leave to care for partner or children
Joint Insurance Plans
Estate and gift tax benefits

That's why this isn't going away any time soon.

This is why gay people are fighting in case anyone wants to figure out why we are making a huge stink of things.

I like how a driving force for the ban in California was "THINK OF THE CHILDREN!"

When I'm sure many gay couples are entirely willing to adopt, enabling children who don't deserve to be in the situation they're in to be able to live happy lives. But oh well. Little Sally can't live in a nice house with two daddies to intimidate those future boyfriends because Joe and Jane Doe do not want their already well to do little Jonny to figure out that dudes can wed other dudes.

THINK OF THE ALREADY FORTUNATE CHILDREN! The rest can QQ and fuck off?

I like how a driving force for the ban in California was "THINK OF THE CHILDREN!"

Yeah, it's an ever-popular tactic. Flashbacks to Anita Bryant and the "Save the children" hysteria she spearheaded against letting gay people in Florida adopt children.

People in California are rabble rousing that since Prop 8 passed, those couples already joined should be nullified. That is amazing in it's brutal ignorance.

We all sing and preach and send loved ones off to fight for our home. The home of the brave, and the land of the FREE. This country is about freedom. It was founded on the very principals that you are free to live your life however you want.

Yet, we are consistently challenging our own common freedoms. Civil rights, womens equality, and now I ask how is homosexual marriage any different? For as smart as Americans are supposed to be, we sure are the stupidest, most ignorant country of our own rights.

We take freedoms for granted. We do. And all of the ignorant, stupid, evangelical, right wing nut jobs that run around repressing people are the exact poison that ruins this great country and makes the rest of the world despise us.

The first person I would like to see get their comeuppance is that ignorant shrew Elizabeth Hasselbeck from The View. I don't watch the show, but I always hear about her fighting tooth and nail to impress upon people her right wing beliefs. So I have to know who she is because she is a hate monger like Bill O'Reilly in it's purest form.

What bothers me quite a bit is people who just take what they believe and run with that idea instead of stepping back and looking at not only the sides, but what people rightfully deserve as humans.

Personally I think you do deserve it as a human.

Unfortunately what you deserve has very little to do with the outcome of an argument between 2 parties, and essentially that is what this is.

The determining factor will always be what the 2 parties can live with at the time of the settlement.

Not what you deserve or think you deserve, its what you think you can get out of the other party at that particular time.

And if you do not recognize that fact, then there will most likely not be a settlement that you like. Most likely because the other side see's that you are not willing to negotiate so they won't either.

Take the military for instance. Do you see what is happening right now? Year s ago they put into effect the "Don't ask don't tell policy", now they are reevaluating it to allow Gays and Leisbans to openly serve in the Military and they have many people in High Command supporting this.

This is an example of taking a little at a time to move things faster. Not the ideal situation true, but lots more effective than the "take the bull by the horns" approach used with this gay marriage fight.

I disagree.

Clinton promised full inclusion in the military, but backed off when the military balked in squeaking terror at the idea of sharing their bunkspace with "the gays." That idiotic "Don't ask, don't tell" compromise never would've happened without the prospect of openly gay men and women serving as equals.

If you're not striving or the full package, you'll never get the other side to take those small steps to try and shut you up. The only reason "civil unions" and the rest of these ersatz legal protections -- which were unthinkable a decade ago -- are even on the table is because gay couples want full civil marriage equality and are throwing everything but the kitchen sink at the problem.

What were people saying about the constitution and saying how it's unconstitutional to not allow homosexuals to marry? I don't know the American constitution of course, but I'm going to give it a good read.
