I've seen figures range from 1/10 second to 1 & 1/2 seconds to get from the JP servers to NA servers. I would say 1/10 is the better estimate, but that is just a guesstimate.

Has anyone actually seen a reported figure of the latency?

As for the Poll, I would like Endgame shell members that have experience countercamping JP shells to vote one whether they feel it makes a difference.

Japan's response time is 181 ms, NA is a little better at around 60. -edit: current at time of post-

I'm kinda unfamiliar with response times, but I'm just gonna take a blind gander at this - would that mean a 241 ms round trip run? Nearly 1/4 of a second of lag?

i r teh suck at math. best bet would be to ask rones, cubs, or mebbe skaw.

Cubs provided that link a long long long long long time ago, had to dust it off to copy it, i rarely use it as i understand little about it save that it's useful for determining why i lag to all hell.

Edit: According to the roomie those are shown as round trips (send & recieve) so the base number would be right, i think.

Edit Edit: If you have the server connection information (i.e. IP addy or server name) you can hit your command prompt on XP and ping it to determine lag between the two.

Syntax: c:\> ping (addy)

I don't recommend doing this a whole lot tho as it sends your information to the server in question and might be viewed as an attack, wouldn't want to arrouse the anger of SE, your ISP, or the fibi.

Yes, it matters. Hence why SE implemented the pop claim delay.

Now it's based off latency and luck, as opposed to just latency.

So how does that explain JP players not being able to outclaim NMs that are dominated by the chinese gil sellers?

My point being, Latency is just one of the factors out of whole mess of factors that affect the player's ability to claim.

To highlight latency as the major factor for people's ability to claim, is like trying to say elvaan monks will likely outdamage galkan monks because they have 1 more base STRs.

I have a 1000Mbps fiber optic network and i was never, -NOT ONCE- out of 2 years that I spent playing this game...be the 1st to claim an HNM.

But then a friend gave me an advice to:
1.lower my resolution
2.take all the battle effects off
3.set weather effects off
4.set shadows to lowest setting
before camping HNMs.
It definitely helped. I won't say that I outclaimed ppl 50 times in a row after that or anything outrageous, but for one mobs stopped popping purple. I claimed my share of hnms afterwards, and became a believer latency is only a very small part of the equation.

China is a lot closer to Japan than the United States is. The difference in Latency isn't much between the two countries. You can have all the bandwidth in the world Lockstar, it matters more about whats on the other side of the connection than it is what you have. Video effects only do one thing. Render faster. No way does it help latency.

any1 have a program to check the ping? i dont if windowers or watver have them, i use normal FFXI. you can assume the JP ping is beetween 9 and 30, so find out what your ping is. ide venture to say its roughly a 400MS diffrence, but ide be intrested to see the actual figures, or a way to tracert the server or check ping while on FFXI

edit, jus read ur thing acry, it would take 181 MS for the mob to load on ur screen, then 60 seconds for your action to be recorded to the sever backbone, and then another 181 MS for your packet to be reaciived in JP, where the JP have prob a 50 MS roundtrip

(181+60+181)-50=372 so prety close to me guess of 400, for YOUR comp, each person is diffrent depending on there ISP and location in NA, comp and all that bullsheeeet, but iode venture to guess, if u live eastcost, people run .25-.5 second delay, if ur westcoast then we run a .4-.6 second delay

Duh, I feel like a moron - completely forgot I could just ping a JP based server for a response time -. -

Results seem to be a 1/5 second round trip. This is pinging a backbone line from the website linked to above.
Backbone server:
ping1.gif

pol server:
ping2.gif

(This one is different because I couldn't directly ping the game servers. I'm guessing this is because of SE's trouble with DDoS. I dunno why I'm hiding the IP - guess it is to keep idiots from tring to h4xX0r, but they can find the IP same way I did)

I had to do a little research, but my understanding is the tracert command sends 3 packets to all servers on it's way to its final destination. So from my computer in Johnson City Tennessee, it took anywhere from 204 to 264 microseconds round trip. The initial 2576 ms value was because my firewall popped up ><;;;.

So yea, final finding - about a 1/4 second delay from JP server, to your client PC - depending on your connection speed.
