Ok I left the game at 65 sam or was it 64..dunno but it was about there and when COP released.

Now at the time (having static pt) I used to use Sam/Thief to shift hate off of DPS melee (at the time it was Wars or Rangers) while we had a Ninja tank.

I had several situational combos:
Sam/War (at Zilart times) was a good dmg set up
Sam/Thief flexibility in party with hate management
Sam/Ranger when helping lower levels ..nothing like firing off that side winder 3 times. Well back then.

So now I am contemplating installing tonight because I miss the game. And I miss many folks who still are presently there. Also new jobs!

As I play my Samurai I wanted to know what job combos and why you recommend them. Also I did hear food changed dramatically and Mithkabobs are now not needed as for the Sushi balls are now way more effective.

So what do I need to adjust before playing my main job? Also I plan on just farming with the Main till I get used to it again..in the meantime I planned on leveling a new job and relearning the entire game again..wooo:crazy:

did you try looking there?

Must haves:
war is best when mobs die too quickly to care what your sub is. such as group events where you have 30 or more members. as obtuse as it seems, you wont be subbing this much outside of the path to 75.

thf is you standard Nortorious Monster (NM) sub. For obvious reason you seem to comprehend so far, but on a larger alliance scale.

nin is the other most common sub, just because you less of a liability to mages to waste MP curing you.

Situational subs:
rng is nice in kited fights, or mobs you otherwise want to stand far back on. For the average player, this is not reccomended. Why? because it takes far more determination to make /rng a viable sub then the average joe. If you have it currently, your only going to be using it in ballista. If your not going to shoot for 8/8 merits in archery, i wouldnt bother using it on the NM scene.

drg is potentionally the highest dps (damage per second) sub you can have, but it takes the best gear and the most optimal conditions to do so. outside of that, it's just a semi-less suicidal sub then war is.

dnc is arguably the best solo sub, when combined with Soboro (lv 50 great katana) uses Tp to cure ones self. Somewhat useful as a backup healer for very lowman events. sam/dnc can keep 3 other melee in good shape health wise if thier not taking insane damage.

drk is worse then war and drg for dps, but you gain the ability to stun, when your group may lack one extra stunner. you can have about 100 mp with gear and /drk mp, which is adequet to stun.

Food:
Samurai shouldnt need sushi if you have the proper gear. there was a update that changed to conversion that DEX has to accuracy. 1DEX = 0.75ACC where as before is was 1DEX = 0.50ACC for 2handed weapons. Hell, 53+ you more then likely wont even need food if your fighting colibri.

Thanks for the breakdown. So basically general sub to use is Dancer… something I don’t have yet but it sounds interesting.

You are correct that Ranger build was something I used for fun mostly or just simply stupid burst dps … I used it back in the day on Summoner battles… usually the end part of the fight just letting loose with sidewinders.

I recall my gear ofcourse is the Sam first set… I used the Ochidu Kote’s back then vs sam gloves… Haubersomething I recall having in my inventory.

The only thing now is did they keep my account …I remember way way back when they had that return to Van letter go out…and it was over a year since I played and my character was intact….but now its been well about 5+years I think… Is there a way to find out if my account is deleted or not?

This will determine if I come back..reason being Is I am still very actively PVPing in Warhammer. But I have spare time in between our alliance wars since they are not daily.

To start all over would make me want to claw my eyes out.. I would have to dedicate myself to FFXI to really get the most out of it and go through all the troubles of Sam AF and re-leveling many jobs I already had at 35…

I hope it is still ok…I would like to toy around with the game again casually and try out the new jobs. At 65 Sam I should be able to unlock them solo correct? Or help others unlocking in the process with little to no help with heals?

Thanks for the input. It's given me some food for thought. Its very nice to know my friends who are in a end game LS and have been in game since PC launch will have a place for me. And can join me as I level..which is nice.

My old FFXI guide book is obsolete so now I need a new one =)...

I used to have weapon chain charts memorized...dear god I know...how the heck? I used to type on the fly calling chains it was nuts..I dont think I can do it anymore...not without annoying my wife. Now that I am married vs then...I dont have the amount of time to be a total game freak...just partial

PS if my reply comes very late its due to me being new to forums and having my posts viewed first..sorry for delays.

Its true, but you're good now =). Sorry bout the irritation lol.

yeah, from the sounds of your situation, if you just going to be running around with friends doing quests and such, dnc is your best bet. dosent sound like you can devote too much time to endgame. wife and endgame mix like oil and water.

at 65 you should be able to unlock all of the jobs. consult one of the gear guides and www.ffxiah.com for prices so you can reasonably set your goals.

altho, ffxiah.com is a very useful site, it has become a hacker target recently it would seem, so make sure you use security measures when browsing it. firefox reccomended.

Luckily I have very strong Virus/Maleware protection and 3 firewalls. Firefox is like default thing on all my PC's because of those problems you mentioned.

As for ffxiah i will check it out. I was using Wiki (thank god for windowed mode now) and looking up quests.

I can see that they eased leveling up a lot. But never addressed the Time Sinks they kept throwing in our faces constantly.

Not to sound so negative: But the population really has become thinned out ..which actually makes me kinda sad. I was looking forward to seeing a bustling city and players running about to chat with.

Yah you are correct.. I cant dedicate daily free time to FFXI like I used to. And I will check that site out ..I've been alt-tab between game and wiki with the quests.

So far in 2 days of play (2-3 hour sessions) I only accomplished retraining myself to get used to combat...making only one set of macros vs one for every sub job set..let alone main sets for other jobs <,< dear god making macros is a pain with so many other jobs I have ..

I made it over to Whitegate finally before giving in... I still have to unlock those TP relic pads I was told to get before I want to level. Ugh..more running around...

I was thoroughly confused about Maw ....traveling in the past.... ugh again.

DNC is stupid and completely unnecessary as a sub for SAM. Sure, you can cure yourself with it. Sure, you can give party members a drain samba. But bear in mind if you're using your DNC abilities you're generally losing your tp as a result and makes it completely counterproductive to the task at hand - dealing damage. I know there will be people who disagree but be that as it may, your best sub's will be war and nin followed by thf (although I dont think I've EVER gone /thf it's not a bad option if you need a little enmity control) and drg (yep, with the right setup /drg outparses all). The game hasn't changed as much as you think even though there have been tons of addons. The basic mechanics are still the same, same grind, same redundancy, but bigger payouts with the additions of WoTG and ToAU (including ZNM).

Pretty sure /dnc was meant for solo, not parties.

Edit:
Was too lazy to quote this the first time.

Thanks for counter reply on DNC. The basics being the same then I probably should play with what I am accustomed to using then.

I toggled between Sam/War and Sam/Thief in parties. I mostly did the war sub in parties. Fliping to DPS output or Defensive (and gear swap macro). Taking hits in hauber is the suck ..sniper earings and the Ochidu Kote's ...I couldnt evade a snail coming right at me.

So if its same mechanics I will just get the Thief War and Ranger macros made for the Sam then. Using what worked in the past is probably best till I try those new jobs and figure them out.

thanks for the input everyone...
