dont get dell.... if you want a recommendation, stick to samsung monitors. They actually have warrentees that they honor and some pretty great monitors.

Also, if you play any FPS games or watch a lot of movies, etc on your computer, I would recommend not using pretty much any LCD monitors yet. The Veiwsonic monitor has a 3ms response time and the Dell has an 8ms response.
Compared to an average CRT monitor response time of <0.2ms, this is pretty big. Probably not a huge consideration to most people, but in any twitch reflex games, you'll notice it a LOT....

just my 2gil...

Also keep in mind response times posted are usually highly inaccurate. Companies use different defintions for what they call a full response. Even when their standards are the same, many have exagerated (in their favor) times. Tomshardware.com shows this many times on monitors claiming 8ms response which actually have 15-20ms times.

Yea like 2 years ago LCDs were bad....3ms is fine, get the viewsonix

Btw, CRT and LCDs response times are measured in different ways

Dell 2405FPW.
Got one at work when they first came out, got one at home a few months later. Played WoW on it, and FEAR, and a bunch of other stuff. It's plenty fast. About US$730 shipped from Dell, maybe less on eBay.

re: Dell in general
Dell deliveres consistently high quality when it comes to the LCDs. The actual panels are from Samsung in most cases. Dell will take the screens back if they have dead pixels which is something some other vendors do not do.

after working some numbers it looks like my budget can't afford the added cost of a 19" I will probably have to go with a 17" instead :-( I know the diffrence is probably only $50-$100 each but when you have lived on your own for a little over a year now and ur keeping yourself on a strict budge that $50-$100 is the diffrence between having dinner everyday or living off of tuna fish sandwiches...lol

regarding contrast ratio what is better higher or lower## for example

is 600:1 better then 700:1 or vice versa

What you should look for is the max resolution and response time, also refresh rate but most of them are 70-75 so that should be fine. You might want to look around on Newegg.com, i dont have to explain how good the service is, cause its the best. This Samsung is a great monitor, better value than most Dells too.

and if thats too pricy then you can get this one

Bigger is better. It refers to how much constrast you can have with adjacent pixels. Larger numbers mean you can have a larger difference between adjacent pixel colors. Low contrast ratios cause blurring.

Thanks... I read that its best not to go below 500:1 but it didn't explain why... you gave a great explanation as to what Contrast ratio is I appreciate your help

My biggest thing is I don't want a monitor w/alot of ghosting. My girlfriends old LCD monitor was terrible what causes ghosting?

I'd say wait till you can afford the 19" one, 17" is like going back to the Dark Ages. I know it's exciting to buy new stuff, but really, 17" is just too small. It's like a laptop screen.

I'm going to a computer fair this weekend I'm hoping to work a deal w/one of the vendors my girlfriends father goes to the Cogain Computer fairs 2x a year or more so a couple of the vendors know him very well and always hook him up because he keeps coming back...My old old old monitor is dieing and when I'm in dark tunnels I can't see anything it started acting weird where the screen would distort and stuff and I smelled a faint buring smell so I have to get a monitor now or I'm not going to be able to play... If I can get a good deal on a 19" at the fair ill go for it if not ill have to settel for the 17"

if you can get a 19 inch monitor, i suggest you do it. one of my good friends play counter strike on a tiny little monitor at his house, and when he plays on my brother's 19 inch monitor, he talks about how awesome it is and how easy headshots are. i have a laptop with a 17 inch screen, and its not to bad, but i don;t play to many games on it besides starcraft. i play ffxi on a ps2 and a 24 inch tv. but i really wanna use my girlfriend's dad's tv and home theatre system. i swear to god it is a 5 foot wide (not corner to corner, i mean side to side) sony wega flat screen tv. its so beautiful. i love watching movies on it. he bought it like 3 month's ago.

yeah I believe you I see one of the Sharp Aquos tvs for sale at the Mohigan Sun Casino in CT and I want one so bad now....The picture is amazing but of course they were asking $2800 when Ive seen in elsewhere for about $500 to $700 cheaper

I was gonna say, Viewsonic monitors are very good monitors, and I would suggest you getting one. I'm sure you wont regret buying one, my viewsonic has nearly no pixel banding, and a very low response time. I think you got the one up from mine, (mine is a VA902), so I'm sure it'll kick ass for you!

Happy new monitor day!
